THE LANDSLIDE THAT WASN'T By Sam Jordan The polling booths had barely closed and the final vote count was 2 days away, but that did not stop the pundits in Israel from rushing to declare a landslide victory for the Left and to eulogize the Right. For example, Sara Honig wrote in the Jerusalem Post wrote on May 18: "Gone is the tie between Left and Right. It was decisively broken and it might stay broken for many years to come... It was a rout for the entire right wing." To paraphrase Mark Twain, could it be that the rumors of the Right's demise are greatly exaggerated? While Barak did win the race for prime minister handily, within the Knesset things are not so simple. He has no blocking majority as the Left, the Center Party and the Arab parties total only 60 seats out of 120. And these 60 seats include numerous former Likudniks that have wound up with Barak for personal reasons rather than ideological reasons. Barak's One Israel bloc has a mere 26 seats, several of which belong to Gesher and Meimad, not his own Labor party. If Barak wants to prove that he has great support in the country he will not be able to break the long-standing tradition of not bringing the Arab parties into a coalition, nor will he want a minority government. That would be admitting defeat. But without the Arab parties Barak has only 50 seats from the Left from which to make his coalition. He needs 11 more seats to get a majority.

Federal Report Recommends Making Technology Access Easier For People With Disabilities by Jordan Baker CANBERRA, June 8, 2000 (AAP) - The elderly and disabled use new technologies least, even though they could benefit most from them, a new report has found. Attorney-General Daryl Williams today tabled in parliament a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) report which found new technology could bring huge advantages to the elderly and disabled if access problems were removed. The report into new service and information technologies said the main barriers to using the Internet and other electronic services for the disabled and elderly were cost, limited access, concerns about privacy and security, and no human touch. Complex graphics could also be a problem for the visually impaired, while phone services relying on button pushing present a problem for people with poor eyesight or memory difficulties. "(But) use of digital technology has particular benefits for many people with disabilities and older people in providing access to information and services in formats and locations which they can use, which previously have been difficult or impossible for them to have access to," the report said. To overcome these difficulties, the report recommended:

"It's all well and good to talk about how much we have been able to do, and how much we're going to do and so on. But I think we need to also be real here and recognize how much we're not able to do. For example, the way in which a black woman, we'll say a woman writer, a woman poet is treated, a black woman poet, is very different from someone who is not black, someone who is not a woman writer or poet. That's just for real." When she was a young girl, June Jordan's father taught her how to box; she has been fighting ever since. Jordan battles with her words to heal the cultural, political and economic wounds in our society. Her tenacity as a writer has propelled Jordan to become the "most published African American writer in history," according to the African American Review Affirmative Acts: Political Essays (1998) marks the twenty-sixth book in Jordan's celebrated career as poet, essayist, activist, and professor. Ms. Jordan writes her poetry and essays with clear-sighted passion about controversial and critical issues that are currently at the center of American debate. Addressing the personal as well as the political, Jordan has been described as a poet for whom political conviction exists in the same universe as love. It's no wonder that she was tapped to write the libretto for the 1995 opera by composer, John Adams, and director, Peter Sellars. I Was Looking at the Ceiling and Then I Saw the Sky was dubbed an "earthquake/romance" by Jordan, who gives voice to seven characters in present-day Los Angeles, struggling to fill their lives with love as they deal with racial tensions and a catastrophic earthquake.

As a poet and writer, I deeply love and I deeply hate words. I love the infinite evidence and change and requirements and possibilities of language; every human use of words that is joyful, or honest or new, because experience is new. . . . But as a Black poet and writer, I hate words that cancel my name and my history and the freedom of my future: I hate the words that condemn and refuse the language of my people in America.

President Meets with Leaders of Jordan, Israel and Palestinian Authority

Remarks by President Bush, His Majesty King Abdullah of Jordan, Prime Minister Sharon of Israel, and Prime Minister Abbas of the Palestinian Authority Beit al Bahar Aqaba, Jordan 3:30 P.M. (Local) KING ABDULLAH: President Bush; Prime Minister Sharon; Prime Minister Abbas; distinguished guests: We gather today in Aqaba, this small city that symbolizes the immeasurable potential of bringing different peoples together. Not far from here, Jordan and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1994. Nine years later, what brings us here is the same dream the dream of peace, prosperity, coexistence and reconciliation. But dreams alone cannot fulfill hopes. It is thanks to the efforts of President Bush, and the commitments of Prime Minister Sharon and Prime Minister Abbas, that we meet here today to transform these dreams into real achievements on the ground. Mr. President, Prime Ministers, let us have ambitions ambitions to move beyond the violence and occupation; to the day when two states, Palestine and Israel, can live together, side-by-side, in peace and security.

Childhood Memories
An interview with June Jordan By David Barsamian J une Jordan is assistant professor of African American studies at the University of California at Berkeley. She also directs the Poetry for the People program. She writes for The Progressive magazine. She’s an award-winning poet and essayist. She has numerous books, including Technical Difficulties Naming Our Destiny Affirmative Acts, and Haruko/Love Poems . Her latest work is Soldier , a memoir of her childhood. DAVID BARSAMIAN: Soldier . What a curious title. Is this about some military activity that you’ve been hiding from the public? JUNE JORDAN: It’s about the military activity of my father raising me to be his son. He was an immigrant from Jamaica. He actually came from Panama. My mother was from Jamaica. You grew up in Harlem and Bedford Stuyvesant in a kind of bicultural home. Definitely bicultural and definitely the home of immigrants to this country, which means that my parents, especially my father, arrived and stayed here with both the highest possible expectations of this country, of democracy as he thought of it and of his only child that he was raising to be a successful person in the world. He probably would have liked me to grow up to be a successful white man. You were his helper, his sidekick.

Review - KC.40/41/42 - Jack Jordan - June 1999
Really like KC.40/41/42!! On .40, nice rendition of Sillies' "Fun With a Porpoise" (one of my faves of theirs), and, of course, "I Enjoy Being a Boy" is always great to hear. .41 (selections from your earlier opi) is especially enjoyable..."Wait" is nice; "Streams" is my fave track of the whole tape... "Streams....sharing all of their water; trees, sharing all of their greenery, watching the lights go by...Force giving way to the energy, clearing the way to the mystery... gracing the air of our symmetry...stars, giving all of their gravity..." ...some real art here both musically and lyrically; a K.C. Klassik! In "Bring On" I hear a call for accommodation of all peoples to a common understanding of each other without artifice or pretense. A lofty goal which has been repeated since the mid-'60s to, on a global scale, scant avail. From .42, we get to relive "Jenny's Presentation" from our own elementary school daze, and there's a very dreamy version of "Across the Universe" which, for me, matches the original in beauty.
