Chapter 42: June Jordan
June Jordan
June Jordan

June Jordan was born in Harlem in 1938, the only child of working class Jamaican parents. Growing up in an urban ghetto environment, she was influenced by her family's sense of heritage. Jordan received most of her education in a predominantly-white environment. Spending one year at a girls' preparatory school in Massachusetts, Jordan learned to love the literature she was exposed to, loving first the British Romantics . The appreciation for African American, women's and global literatures which is so evident in her own literary production came later. The deepest influences on Jordan's development as an intellectual and as a writer were her parents. Exposed from an early age to the classics of the Bible, Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, and Paul Laurence Dunbar , she began writing poetry at age seven. Her mother's dreams of becoming an artist, and her suicide before realizing those dreams, motivated Jordan's feminist writing and action. Her mother was Jordan's most significant example in the history of neglected lives and dreams of African American women, which she has dedicated herself to transforming. One of the most political and personal battles of her life was that of her interracial marriage while an undergraduate at Barnard College in 1955. Her marriage and the birth of their son coincided with her involvement in the first stirrings of the Civil Rights Movement. When she met

Secretary-General's visit to Jordan
(June 21-24, 2003)
Secretary-General Kofi Annan arrived in Jordan on June 21 to meet with representatives of the European Union, Russia and the United States for a "Quartet" conference in Jordan which seeks to provide guidance and assist in the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. In late April, the Quartet put forth its "roadmap plan" for peace, which Israel and the Palestinian Authority committed to implement in Aqaba, Jordan on June 4, 2003. This joint press conference of Quartet members included United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, and Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov. Both representing the European Union were Europe's Foreign Policy and Security Chief, Javier Solana and Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou. The following are photo highlights of the Secretary-General's visit: Jordan's national flag flies over the city skyline of Amman on June 21, the day of the arrival of the United Nations Secretary-General for the "Quartet" meeting. BAQA'S REFUGEE CAMP, JORDAN
In Baqa'a, Jordan's largest camp for refugees from Palestine, children pose in the doorway of their UNRWA-constructed household. They attend one of eight schools in the camp, which are operated on a double-shift basis. 3.8 million refugees are now registered with this United Nations agency that was established by a General Assembly Resolution, 53 years ago, on December 8, 1949. These children represent the fourth or even fifth generation of refugees to live in Baqa'a camp.

Jordan's poems look easy, and in fact are just the sort of poetry that amateurs imitate so badly, but they are actually feats of formal expertise and clear yet passionate thought. A prolific, much-lauded poet, novelist, teacher, and activist, Jordan responds fearlessly to the entire universe, from a disappointing God to the unhappy empress of Japan and women starving in Somalia and Los Angeles and weeping for their dead in Northern Ireland, Lebanon, and Bosnia. Combative and questioning, Jordan argues with the Buddha and renounces renunciation, then challenges the patriarchal god of the Bible: "You mean to tell me that the planet / is the brainchild / of a single / male / head of household?" Skeptical, angry, and sick of unexamined beliefs and hypocrisy, Jordan writes warrior poems: muscled, coiled, and unerringly accurate. Donna Seaman (Booklist/November 1, 1997)

34. Interview With Robert Jordan, June 1995
Robert jordan Interview. Made at the East of the Sun fantasy convention, Stockholm, 17 june 1995 by Helena Löfgren. Summary written by KarlJohan Norén.

Robert Jordan Interview
All errors are made by me, and no one else, especially not Robert Jordan. I can't guarantee any quotes, since I didn't have a recorder, but just took notes. For more recent information, see eg Bill Garrett's notes from Balticon XXX The reason Robert Jordan chose to write fantasy was its opportunities to build cultures and experiment with them, in a way and with a freedom to comment that is unachievable with a "realistic", domestically based world. The story of TWoT evolved during a very long period, in part beginning in the middle of the seventies with the idea of the Breaking of the World, before he found the "final scene in the final book" and began to actually write TEotW. The main impetus from the beginning was the notion of men breaking the world" (my emphasis), and that men able to channel must be killed, controlled or stopped at all costs for 3,000 years. This led naturally to a society where women had great power and respect. As an example of this, he puts forth Davram Bashere's reaction to Faile being a Hunter of the Horn. His initial negative response does not come from that Faile is a girl, but that she only is 17 years old. Her gender is irrelevant to the issue. The interview then continued with the communication between the various characters, and Robert Jordan stated clearly that every person keeping a secret, or withholding information, has a good reason for it, even if it in many cases are very personal. He exemplified this with the relation between Birgitte, Elayne and Egwene, where everyone

Jordan - June 1967 War And Aftermath
Returning its attention to the entrenched PLO militias, the Jordanian army was able to clear Amman and the city of Irbid, which the PLO had also occupied, within a week. A fragile cease-fire was negotiated with the help of surrounding Arab states but intermittent fighting continued in early 1971. The remaining fedayeen were gradually pushed back into a mountain defensive complex in the north. A four-day attack launched in July 1971 resulted in the dispersal of the last PLO holdouts.
Jordan was not a formal belligerent in the October 1973 War when Syria and Egypt joined in attacking Israel. Hussein was asked to open a third front but merely placed his army on alert, defending his action by claiming that Jordan had few combat aircraft and no antiaircraft missile protection. By the fifth day of fighting, the Syrian drive had been broken and Syrian troops, abandoning their tanks and artillery, had fallen back to their Golan Heights defensive line. Jordanian armor was moved into position at the southern end of the line and, along with Iraqi forces, took part in one limited attack before a United Nations (UN) cease-fire commenced. Jordanian losses were twenty-eight soldiers killed and eighteen tanks destroyed. The Jordanian forces fought well but again lacked air cover, and their actions were poorly coordinated with the Syrians and Iraqis.

Jordan, June What Would I Do White?
Genre Poem Keywords African-American Experience Power Relations Society Summary The speaker conjectures on what it would be like to be white. Her question is a challenge and her examples are not flattering to whites. "I would forget my furs on any chair. / I would ignore the doormen at the knob . . . " and, finally, "I would do nothing. / That would be enough." Commentary The gap between the speaker and what she conceives of as white is enormous. Not only would her white presence "disturb the streets" of a black neighborhood, but whiteness denotes supercilious oblivion, taking a life of ease for granted, and never having to prove yourself. The tone is disapproving. This poem, like Lucille Clifton's poem, "in the inner city" (see this database), makes clear that the culture of whiteness may not be anything that blacks wish to emulate.
