AUTOBIOGRAPHY LEROI JONES
by Amiri Baraka
465 pages isbn: 1556522312 Poet, dramatist, novelist, critic, teacher, and political activist Amiri Baraka (born Leroi Jones), vividly recounts his crusading role in African-American literature. A driving force behind the Black Arts Movement, the prolific Baraka retells his experiences, from his participation in avant-garde literature after World War II and his role in Black nationalism after the assassination of Malcolm X, to his conversion to Islam and his commitment to an international socialist vision. This is the first complete version of Baraka's life and work, his earlier 1984 biography having been subject to substantial cuts by the publisher.

African American Review
Summer-Fall, 2003 by Ben Lee
Only ideas, and their opposites. Like, he was really nowhere. ("A Poem for Speculative Hipsters," Transbluesency 110) Yet this passage from Baraka's autobiography isolates a new feeling of alienation, one that we are told penetrates his incipient literary consciousness as he wanders through San Juan with his New York Times and his New Yorker: Baraka wrote his autobiography during forty-eight weekends in 1979, a good five years after he began his turn to Third World Marxism and long after this mid-1950s moment in Puerto Rico. (2) This passage is a careful reconstruction of a particular moment of revelation, one that is political in nature though not yet translated into the fully politicized terms the writer has access to in 1979. Thus, for instance, though the young LeRoi Jones of this passage understands that people of color can circulate freely in certain sections of San Juan only if they are American soldiers, he does not, at this point, articulate any sort of (even preliminary) postcolonial critique of such segregation. Nor does he attribute his alienation in the face of this "carefully put together exercise" to race or class, but instead to something within him "so out" that the verse he is reading somehow excludes him and to the fact that this particular verse form and magazine will never express what is "in" him.

African American Review
Summer-Fall, 2003 by Christopher Funkhouser
Two quotes drawn from pages of The Cricket, mimeographed music magazine edited by LeRoi Jones, Larry Neal, and A. B. Spellman in 1968 and 1969, most aptly reflect the intent of the magazine's vision of inter-arts solidarity, aspiration, and attitude. James Stewart's essay "Revolutionary Black Music in the Total Context of Black Distension" proclaims, "Black art is movement, being and becoming. Black art is fluid. Black creation is flux. Speech, poetry, dance and music" (Cricket 3: 14). And considering a new album by Albert Ayler in the final issue of the publication, Larry Neal writes: Music can be one of the strongest cohesives towards consolidating a Black Nation. The music will not survive locked into bullshit categories. James Brown needs to know Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, Cecil Taylor, and Pharoah Sanders.... Implied here is the principle of artistic and national unity; a unity among musicians, our heaviest philosophers, would symbolize and effect a unity in larger cultural and political terms. Further, there should be more attempts to link the music to other areas of the Black Arts movement. LIKE: REVOLUTIONARY CHOREOGRAPHERS LIKE ELMO POMARE, JOHN PARKS, JUDI DEARING, TALLY BEATY SHOULD BE CHECKING OUT CECIL TAYLOR'S MUSIC WHICH IS HEAVILY POSITED ON DANCE CONCEPTS. HOW DOES POETRY AND MUSIC OPERATE IN THE CONTEXT OF POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS GATHERINGS. PHAROAH NEEDS A TEMPLE. SUN RA IS A BEAUTIFUL BLACK INSTITUTION. POETS SHOULD WRITE SONGS. (Cricket 4: 38-39)

The Autobiography of Leroi Jones > Customer Review #1: frankness, humor, self-examination ....

Autobiographies, even by poets, rarely reach the depths of honest self-examination one finds in their poems. One has only to think of Kenneth Rexroths tall stories or William Carlos Williams evasions.
But Mr. Barakas is different. His has been a journey from a middle class background in Newark (keeping in mind that it was not a white middle class), through Howard Universitys elitist social structure, the racism of the Air Force; his beginnings as a poet and his drift into Charles Olsons powerful gravity. Many of Americas best white poets were among his friends and he did much to promote their careers along with his own. Then his turn toward leadership of the great Black Awakening of the Sixties, his move "uptown," his embrace of socialism and subsequent return to Newark where he continues to influence young writers and activists of all colors and ethnic backgrounds.
There are also his controversial plays, his feuds, marriages and arrests. Also his witnessing of the Newark Rebellion (the full deadly story never accurately reported in the press), his deep understanding of American culture and respect for authentic expression.

http://www.nathanielturner.com/leroijones.htm
ChickenBones: A Journal Home LeRoi Jones: Pursued by the Furies A Review of Home on the Range By Paul Velde The blacks may not be the only ones who want to chuck the whole of Western civilization and start over again, but they seem to be the only ones the majority of whites are willing to believe, or at least to make a good pretense at it. LeRoi Jones, for instance, is taken literally when he calls for the death of all white devils, or whatever. The question with Jones is just how one should take him. To take him seriously as a racist, but not as a poet, is the usual reaction, but that is too easy, and perhaps dangerous as well. The most recent Jones sally against the devils was his piece for voices and music which played in an East Village theater to a mixed audience of blacks and whites attending a benefit for the jailed leaders of California’s Black Panther Party. The piece was both a proto-liturgy for black raciality and, more interestingly, an attempt to get back to the origins of blackness.
