LeRoi Jones
LeRoi Jones was a prominent African American figure throughout the various art forms and communities of New York City. He is difficult to place in any one particular place/location since he is mentioned in various neighborhoods depending upon what point in his life we examine (the Living Theater, Cherry Lane Theater, the New School, Gas Light Cafe, Eight Street Bookstore). I found the following site while searching the web www.bridgesweb.com/baraka.html . I found this site of particular importance and significance since it conceptualizes Jones/Baraka in a timeline autobiography. It traces his days from a Beat to a Black Nationalist to a Third World Marxist. At the end is a discussion of his play "Dutchman" which we viewed in class last week. It elaborates on Banes theory for motivations and themes within the play and how it correlated to his life and many African Americans of his time. Lynette Erbe I had never heard of LeRoi Jones prior to this semester, but now that I have, his name has popped a couple of times outside of this class. So, I thought I would add a bit to what Lynette brought up about his involvement in the Black Nationalist movement. For a history class I am taking this semester, we are reading a book entitled

Notes For a Speech
African blues does not know me. Their steps, in sands of their own land. A country blown down pavements of the world. Does not feel what I am.
Strength
in the dream, an oblique suckling of nerve, the wind throws up sand, eyes are something locked in hate, of hate, of hate, to walk abroad, they conduct their deaths apart from my own. Those heads, I call my "people."
(And who are they. People. To concern
myslef, ugly man. Who you, to concern the white flat stomachs of maidens, inside houses dying. Black. Peeled moon light on my fingers move under her clothes. Where is her husband. Black words throw up sand to eyes, fingers of their private dead. Whose soul, eyes, in sand. My color is not theirs. Lighter, white man talk. They shy away. My own dead souls, my, so called people. (For Kellie Jones, Born 16 May 1959) Lately, I've become accustomed to the way
The ground opens up and envelops me
Each time I go out to walk the dog.
Or the broad-edged silly music the win
Makes when I run for the bus... Things have come to that. And now, each night I count the stars,
And each night I get the same number.
And when they will not come to be counted,
I count the holes they leave. Nobody sings anymore. And then last night, I tiptoed up
To my daughter's room and heard her
Talking to someone, and when I opened The door, there was no one there... Only she on her knees, peeking into Her own clasped hands. [thanks to LBacall16@aol.com] Ancient Music The main thing to be against is Death!

Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones): The Man, the Poet, and the Myth
  • Genre(s): African-American, Beats
  • Period: 1960s to the present
  • Lines: (from "Western Front")
My intentions are colors. I'm filled with
color, every tint you think of lends to mine
my mind is full of color, hard muscle streaks,
or soft glow round exactness registration. All earth
heaven things, hell things, in colors circulate a wild blood train, turn litmus like a bible coat, ...
  • Quote: My writing reflects my own growth and expansion, and at the same time the society in which I have existed throughout this confrontation. Whether it is politics, music, literature, or the origins of language, there is always a historical and time/place/condition reference that will always try to explain why I was saying both how and for what (Baraka Reader, Preface). Poet, essayist, jazz critic, social critic, dramatist, orator, fiction writer and activist writer all describe the enormous accomplishments of Amiri Baraka, formerly LeRoi Jones, but none of these come close to describing the art and, more importantly, the life of Baraka. Baraka's poetry represents the evolution of a mind that has gone through radical changes in ideological influences, but even in these changes there has been a consistent linear development of discovery and rebellion. It is this development that makes Baraka the person, poet, and activist that he is. [ Click to Order the LeRoi Jones/Amiri Baraka Reader (soft $) ]
