In the only critical examination of all of Jack Kerouac's published prose, James T. Jones turns to Freud to show how the great Beat writer used the Oedipus myth to shape not only his individual works but also the entire body of his writing. Jones demonstrates that Maggie Cassidy, The Subterraneans, and Tristessa share a form that results from Kerouac's unresolved rivalry with his father for the love of his mother. He discusses Kerouac's replacement of the destructive brother figures in On the Road and Visions of Cody with the constructive hero of The Dharma Bums. He also shows how the Oedipal structure of the Duluoz Legend applies to Kerouac's nonfiction. In the penultimate chapter, Jones explains how Big Sur, Kerouac's story of his alcohol-induced nervous breakdown, actually marks the climax of the Duluoz Legend. The alcoholism, Jones insists, is not the cause but a symptom of a breakdown brought on by his attachment to his mother. He shows how Kerouac's obsession with his family repeats Oedipal themes throughout the Duluoz Legend. Finally, he deals with Oedipal themes in Kerouac's nonnarrative work, including Old Angel Midnight, Some of the Dharma, The Scripture of the Golden Eternity, and several poems.

ATT**PRESIDENT/CEO I am Mr. Jones ISIOMA, Bank Manager of Safe Trust Bank, Lagos Branch . I have urgent and very confidential business proposition for you. On June 6, 1999, an American Oil consultant/contractor with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Mrs. Ann Barbara Myers made a numbered time (Fixed) Deposit for twelve calendar months, valued at US$25,000,000.00 (Twenty- five Million Dollars) in my branch. Upon maturity, I sent a routine notification to her forwarding address but got no reply. After a month, we sent a reminder and finally we discovered from her contract employers, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation that Mrs. Ann Barbara Myers died from an automobile accident. On further investigation, I found out that she died without making a WILL, and all attempts to trace her next of kin were fruitless. I therefore made ! fu! rther investigation and discovered that Mrs. Ann Barbara Myers did not declare any kin or relations in all his official documents, including his Bank Deposit paperwork in my Bank. This sum of US$25,000,000.00 is still sitting in my Bank and the interest is being rolled over with the principal sum at the end of each year. No one will ever come forward to claim it and according to Nigerian Law, at the expiration of 5 (five) years, the money will revert to the ownership of the Nigerian Government if nobody applies to claim the fund.

T he impact of James Bond on all spy thrillers after the release of Dr. No (1962) and the success of Goldfinger (1964) cannot be overstated. The success of Bond was quickly taken up in film, television and literature in an effort to capitalize on 007's success. It is no wonder then that when one looks at one of Hollywood's most glaring examples of appropriation, blaxploitation, one finds the tropes of Bond being so liberally sprinkled about. Cleopatra Jones (1973) and Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold (1975) are two excellent examples of Bond's influence on spy stories. Whether it be the exotic far-flung locales, the excessive weaponry ingeniously concealed, or how Cleo always escapes from the most implausible snares set by her nemeses, the sub-text of Bond is never pushed too far below the surface. Of course as the figurehead of espionage culture, James Bond could not be outdone by an outrageously bedecked black female action hero. In Roger Moore’s first stab at the Bond role, Live and Let Die (1973) finds Bond dispatching a number of voodoo practicing/heroin smuggling black gangsters who wallow in the style made popular by the blaxploitation films. These three films display a remarkably tangled web of Hollywood's co-optation strategies as they apply to race.
