Social Control, Social Displacement and Coal Mining in the Cumberland Plateau, 1880-1930. by Dr. James B. Jones, Jr. Every Day in Tennessee History Along with the change to factory production was a basic shift in the source of energy, from human to steam. The industrial revolution was ultimately driven by steam-engines fueled by coal. As it progressed so did the demand for a plentiful and cheap source of coal energy. In America that source was bituminous coal, found in the Appalachian Mountains which run from Pennsylvania to northern Alabama. In Tennessee the portion of that mountain chain where coal is found is the Cumberland Plateau. It extends in a northeast and southwest direction across the state, forming the dividing line between Middle and East Tennessee. The Cumberland Plateau is divided into the northern and southern coal fields consisting of 21 counties. By comparison with Kentucky and West Virginia, the Cumberland Plateau is relatively poor in coal resources. Nevertheless, it was sufficiently rich enough to catch the attention of investors eager to cash in on fueling industrial growth. Coke, a residue of coal, was used as a fuel for iron production and became also a product of coal mining in Tennessee. Beehive coke ovens, so called because of their internal shape, were constructed around 1859 at the Tracy City location in Grundy County and at the Etna operation in Marion County. The remains of some are part of the state park at Tracy City, while others may be found in Dunlap [NR] and in Whiteside, Glen Mary, and Waldensia. Additionally, along the Cumberland River there were some small time operations which helped fuel the U.S. Navy gunboats during the Civil War.

James Henry Jones, attorney, Confederate Army officer, and United States representative, was born in Shelby County, Alabama, on September 13, 1830, the son of Willis H. and Mary H. (Taylor) Jones; he was raised in Talladega County. He was admitted to the bar in 1851 and established a practice in Henderson, Texas. With the outbreak of the Civil War qv he raised and took command of a company that was later part of Col. Oran M. Roberts's qv Eleventh Texas Infantry. After promotion to lieutenant colonel, Jones commanded the regiment during the Red River campaign in the absence of Colonel Roberts and was wounded at the battle of Pleasant Hill. Thereafter he was promoted to colonel, and at the war's end he was commanding the Third Brigade of Walker's Texas Division. He returned to Henderson and was elected a delegate to the Democratic national convention in 1880 at Cincinnati, where he cast his ballot for Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock. qv In 1883 Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives from the Third District of Texas; he was a member of the Forty-eighth and Forty-ninth congresses, 1883-87. There he served on the Committee on Post Offices and Post Roads and the Committee on Mines and Mining. format this article to print JONES, JAMES WALES (1797-1847). James W. Jones was born in Columbia County, Georgia, on January 13, 1797, the son of Thomas and Sarah Jones. He and his brother, Randal Jones, qv were among the first of Stephen F. Austin's qv Old Three Hundred qv colonists. By January 1822 they were in what is now Washington County. In July 1822 the brothers found Jane Long qv on the San Jacinto River and took her to San Antonio. On August 10, 1824, James Jones received title to a league and a labor of land in what are now Fort Bend and Wharton counties; he settled in Fort Bend County near Henry Jones. qv James Jones's wife, Hetty (Styles), was a sister of Mrs. Henry Jones. In 1826 James Jones was aged between twenty-five and forty. Ammon Underwood qv visited the James Jones plantation in January 1835. Jones served in the Texas Army under Capt. Wyly Martin qv from March 7 to June 7, 1836. In 1840 Jones was on a committee to check fraudulent land claims in Fort Bend County. He was living at Richmond in December 1845; he died at Prairie Lea on September 29, 1847. He and his wife were reburied in the State Cemetery qv in 1953.

His role in Cry, the Beloved Country as a minister whose son is condemned to death as a murderer is one Jones had been waiting years to play. Already touted as a possible Oscar contender for the part, Jones said the role was one of his most challenging and rewarding ever. During a trip to New York for the film's premiere last fall, Jones sat down with NUVO and several other publications to discuss his love for the role - and of the film's gentle yet poignant message. NUVO: You had committed to Cry, the Beloved Country years before it was shot. At what point did you decide to take the role? Was it when you saw the script? JONES: Way before that. I had read the book years ago and had always wanted to be in it. My big question was: How would the gentleness - which I think is the key to my character - how would it go over with young black people? My main concern was that it not appear as something from the past, as a museum piece. I said, "When Mandela is freed, we'll see." My character mirrors Mandela's gentleness. When he was freed, I knew I would make this picture. Later, the script came along and I loved it. NUVO: How do you see the film in terms of race relations in America today? In his newest film, Space Cowboys Space Cowboys presents Eastwood as a very smart fellow who, along with a team of seventysomething ex-Air Force test pilots, saves the planet from certain destruction. Eastwood plays team leader and engineer extraordinaire Frank Corbin, whose circa-1969 Skylab guidance system has "somehow" ended up on Ikon, a Russian "communications satellite." The verbal equivalents of these scare-quotes come up in various conversations about the mission, ominously indicating that something is not quite right about said mission, and that Clint will, by film's end, be his usual awesomely righteous self and then some. John Jones, James O'Donel, and the Question of Religious Tolerance in Eighteenth-Century Newfoundland: A Correspondence Hans Rollmann I On the 17th of April 1785, the small congregation of Dissenters that had gathered in St. John's for the six o'clock evening worship was rudely disturbed by a mob of angry men, women, and children hurling rocks at their meeting house. When a sergeant from the garrison appeared at the entrance, he was struck on the head with a stone thrown by the Catholic rioters. And although the frightened worshippers several times before had been the object of pranks by Navy soldiers pouring gunpowder down the chimney, this disturbance appeared to be more serious. Only the utmost efforts of John Livingston, an influential citizen, succeeded in dispersing the mob and restoring calm. When the congregation brought a grievance before the local judges, it in turn was accused of inciting anti-Catholic feelings through the sermons of its minister John Jones. The Rev. Walter Price, If any among the Catholic rioters felt that their assault might receive the blessing of the Church, they were quickly told differently by the new superior of the Catholic mission in Newfoundland.
