Welcome to literatis.co.uk. This website is based (very) loosely on the life, times and works of Samuel Johnson - Doctor Johnson of English Dictionary fame. The site will be updated regularly with issues of The Rambler , transcribed from a set of volumes whose front page appears below. [Rambler Index] Terry Coombes Contact me via this Feedback Link Books From Amazon What's Happening I'm continuing to type Ramblers - currently on 29. For interest, some definitions from Johnson's Dictionary have been added to the Comments column of Rambler 1. I'll finish adding those shortly and if they generate any interest, I'll do the same for Rambler 2. There's no particular reason for each word's inclusion or exclusion. I still have to add links to some of the concordance software websites I mentioned on the Analyze Rambler Text link introductory page.

Samuel Johnson, one of the most famous figures of the 18th century, was born in the city on the 18th September 1709. His house in Breadmarket Street facing the market square, is now a museum to his life, work and personality. It was built by his bookselling father, Michael, as a family home and bookshop a few months before Samuel’s birth. It is a large solid house, as free from pretensions, it has been said, as Samuel himself. Link to Johnson's House, London

McMaster University, Mills Memorial Library Subjects
Johnson, Samuel; English literature History
Established ca 1965, this collection is part of the Eighteenth Century Collection. The collection developed slowly for the first few years. The Barry Brown Collection, with significant material on Johnson, was acquired in 1969. A grant in 1981 and the 1985 acquisition of the A.G. Rippey Collection have helped build the collection. Description
The collection is the strongest Samuel Johnson collection in Canada. It includes first and variant editions of many of Johnson's works; items to which he contributed; and commentaries and criticisms of his work. The collection is particularly strong in eighteenth century editions and translations, with reasonably strong holdings in nineteenth century editions. Manuscript material is excluded. Present acquisition policy is to acquire all Johnson material when available. Language
English, French, and selected foreign language material. Holdings
400-450 monographs.

Between falsehood and useless truth there us little difference. As gold which he cannot spend will make no man rich, so knowledge which he cannot apply will male no man wise.
Idler
Preface to the Plays of William Shakespeare
Men seldom give pleasure, where they are not pleased themselves.
source = ?
He that has abilities to conceive perfection, will not easily be content without it.
Rambler
Genius, whatever it is, is like fire in the flint, only to be produced by collision with a proper subject.
Rambler
A blighted spring makes a barren year.
Rambler
Rambler Johnson on Painting This is a fascinating glimpse of his views on the inherent limitations of paintings: The action must be circumstantial and distinct. There is a passage in the Iliad which cannot be read without strong emotions. A Trojan prince seized by Achilles in the battle, falls at his feet, and in moving terms supplicates for his life. "How can a wretch like thee," says the haughty Greek, "entreat to live, when thou knowest that the time must come when Achilles is to die?" This cannot be painted, because no peculiarity of attitude or disposition can so supply the place of language as to impress the sentiment. Idler #45 (February 24, 1759)

Did you know?
Johnson suffered from bouts of extreme depression, characterised by Boswell as "a horrible hypochondria... dejection, gloom, and despair" which left him with chronic tics, possibly Tourette's Syndrome. Critical verdict Strikingly clever, startlingly ugly and indefatigably hard-working, Johnson produced his first poem at three, on "good master Duck". Like Wilde, he often gets remembered for his quotability rather than works, thanks to Boswell's biography (in fact largely reconstructed from memory). With his Lives of the Poets, edition of Shakespeare and periodical essays he advanced criticism, biography and journalism; Rasselas, written to pay for his mother's funeral, is a no-word-wasted search for human fulfilment which ends with a "conclusion, in which nothing is concluded". His great work, the Dictionary - which defines lexicographer as "a harmless drudge" - was written over nine years in one room with borrowed books and six copyists.
