Johnson, Samuel
Samuel Johnson (1709-84), who was such a dominant literary figure in the second half of the eighteenth century that the period has sometimes been called the Age of Johnson, lived most of his adult life in London. Until the crown granted him a pension in 1763, he had to support himself by his literary activity, including major projects such as the Dictionary of the English Language (1755) and his edition of the plays of Shakespeare (1765), as well as periodical essay series such as the Rambler (1750-52) and the Idler (1758-60), other separate publications such as the poem The Vanity of Human Wishes (1749) and the tale Rasselas (1759), and miscellaneous writing, mainly for a variety of periodicals. His last major literary project was the series Lives of the Poets
In his 92d Rambler essay Johnson states that "criticism reduces those regions of literature under the dominion of science, which have hitherto known only the anarchy of ignorance, the caprices of fancy, and the tyranny of prescription" ( Yale 4:122). For him, the business of criticism is reasoned literary judgment. It may involve, as he remarked in his "Life of Dryden," "general precepts, which depend upon the nature of things and the structure of the human mind" (

    SAMUEL JOHNSON
JOHNSON, SAMUEL (1709-1784), English writer and lexicographer, was the son of Michael Johnson (1656-173 1), bookseller and magistrate of Lichfield, who married in 1706 Sarah Ford (1669-1759). Michaels abilities and attainments seem to have been considerable. He was so well acquainted with the contents of the volumes which he exposed for sale that the country rectors of Staffordihire and Worcestershire thought him an oracle on points of learning. Between him and the clergy, indeed, there was a strong religious and political sympathy. He was a zealous churchman, and, though he had qualified himself for municipal office by taking the oaths to the sovereigns in possession, was to the last a Jacobite in heart. The social position of Samuels paternal grandfather, William Johnson, remains obscure; his mother was the daughter of Cornelius Ford, a little Warwickshire Gent. At a house (now the Johnson. Museum) in the Market Square, Lichfield, Samuel Johnson was born on the 18th of September 1709 and baptized on the same day at St Marys, Lichfield. In the child the physical, intellectual and moral peculiarities which, afterwards distinguished the man were plainly discernible: The time drew near at which Johnson would, in the ordinary course of things, have become a Bachelor of Arts; but he was at the end of his resources. Those promises of support on which he had relied had not been kept. His family could do nothing for him. His debts to Oxford tradesmen were small indeed, yet larger than he could pay. In the autumn of 1731 he was under the necessity of quitting the university without a degree. In the following winter his father died. The old man left but a pittance; and of that pittance almost the whole was appropriated to the support of his widow. The property to which Samuel succeeded amounted to no more than twenty pounds.

Johnson, Samuel Johnson, Samuel, , English author, b. Lichfield. The leading literary scholar and critic of his time, Johnson helped to shape and define the Augustan Age. He was equally celebrated for his brilliant and witty conversation. His rather gross appearance and manners were viewed tolerantly, if not with a certain admiration. A Note on the Text
The text of this edition of Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. is taken from the two-volume Oxford edition of 1904; in a few places I've corrected errors by comparing the text with that of G. B. Hill and L. F. Powell, 6 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1934-64), and with the second London edition (1793). I have introduced the following changes:
    • The text is broken into separate files by year, using the running heads on the Oxford edition as a guide. In a few cases in the early part of the Life , several years are run together.
    • Boswell uses an asterisk to indicate the works Johnson acknowledged as his own, and a dagger to indicate those he attributed to Johnson on internal evidence. Since HTML does not define the dagger character, I've replaced it with a plus sign (+).
    • Nor does HTML define the pound symbol; I've used an italic

    Later Life and Works
Johnson's first work of lasting importance, and the one that permanently established his reputation in his own time, was his Dictionary of the English Language (1755), the first comprehensive lexicographical work on English ever undertaken. Rasselas, a moral romance, appeared in 1759, and The Idler, a collection of his essays, in 1761. Although Johnson enjoyed great literary acclaim, he remained close to poverty until a government pension was granted to him in 1762. The following year was marked by his meeting with James Boswell , whose famous biography presents Johnson in exhaustive and fascinating detail, often recreating his conversations verbatim. In 1764 Johnson and Joshua Reynolds In 1765 Johnson met Henry and Hester Thrale , whose friendship and hospitality he enjoyed until Thrale's death and Mrs. Thrale's remarriage. In that same year Johnson's long-heralded edition of Shakespeare appeared. Its editorial principles served as a model for future editions, and its preface and critical notes are still highly valued. In the 1770s Johnson wrote a series of Tory pamphlets. His political conservatism was based upon a profound skepticism as to the perfectibility of human nature. Although personally generous and compassionate, he held that a strict social order is necessary to save humanity from itself. In 1773 he toured the Hebrides with Boswell and published his account of the tour in 1775. Johnson's

David and Jemima Ellsworth. He entered Yale in 1762 but transferred to the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) at the end of his second year. He continued to study theology and received his A.B. degree after 2 years. Soon afterward, however, Ellsworth turned to the law. After 4 years of study, he was admitted to the bar in 1771. The next year Ellsworth married Abigail Wolcott. From a slow start Ellsworth built up a prosperous law practice. His reputation as an able and industrious jurist grew, and in 1777 Ellsworth became Connecticut's state attorney for Hartford County. That same year he was chosen as one of Connecticut's representatives in the Continental Congress. He served on various committees during six annual terms until 1783. Ellsworth was also active in his state's efforts during the Revolution. As a member of the Committee of the Pay Table, Oliver Ellsworth was one of the five men who supervised Connecticut's war expenditures. In 1779 he assumed greater duties as a member of the council of safety, which, with the governor, controlled all military measures for the state.

JOHNSON, SAMUEL EALY, SR. (1838-1915). Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr., cattleman, soldier, and grandfather of Lyndon Baines Johnson, qv the tenth child of Jesse and Lucy Webb (Barnett) Johnson, was born in Alabama on November 12, 1838. The family moved to Georgia and in 1846 to Lockhart, Texas. Sam's parents died in the late 1850s, and Sam and his brother Jesse Thomas built a port-holed rock barn as a headquarters for their cattle business at what is now Johnson City. Sam enlisted in Col. Xavier Blanchard Debray's qv regiment on September 18, 1861, and served until the end of the Civil War qv on the coast of Texas and in Louisiana. He was present at the battle of Galveston qv and at the battle of Pleasant Hill in Louisiana. After the war he returned to Lockhart and Johnson City and resumed his cattle buying. He and his brother trailed cattle to Kansas and Montana from 1870 to 1873. Johnson was married to Eliza Bunton on December 11, 1867, in Lockhart, and the couple set up housekeeping in the log cabin at Johnson City that the two brothers had used before the war. They moved to Caldwell County and later to Buda in Hays County, where all but the oldest of their nine children were born. The family returned to Blanco County about 1889 and settled on the Pedernales River twelve miles from Johnson City. Johnson died of pneumonia at Stonewall, Texas, on February 25, 1915.
