B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Samuel Johnson (1709-1784) - Byname Dr. Johnson English poet, essayist, critic, journalist, lexicographer, conversationalist, regarded as one of the outstanding figures of 18th-century life and letters. Johnson's literary reputation is part dependent on James Boswell's (1740-1795) biography The Life of Samuel Johnson LL.D . (1791). The writer Ford Madox Ford has considered Johnson the most tragic figures of English literature, "whose still living writings are always ignored, a great honest man who will remain forever a figure of half fun because of the leechlike adoration of the greatest and most ridiculous of all biographers. For it is impossible not to believe that, without Boswell, Johnson for us today would shine like a sun in the heavens whilst Addison sat forgotten in coffee houses." (from The March of Literature - Johnson became Doctor Johnson when Dublin University gave him the honorary degree in 1765. He had a huge, strong athletic build, his appetite was legendary and it is said that he often drank over 25 cups of tea at one sitting. "One of the disadvantages of wine is that it makes a man mistake words for thoughts."

Introduction As Gulliver says, "Nothing but an extreme Love of Truth could have hindered me from concealing this Part of my Story." I include Johnson's biography of Swift in this collection with strong misgivings. Johnson was no friend or admirer of Swift, taking every opportunity to deride the author. (Some choice examples are included in the collection of quotes about Swift at this site.) Johnson extends his informal attacks on Swift with this essay, originally published in 1779, 34 years after Swift's death. He puts Swift's life and work in the worst light possible, while posturing as a generous and understanding critic. I decided to include this work inspite of its faults. Johnson's apparent bias and animosity does more to discredit the biographer than his subject. I hope the discriminating reader will find Johnson's prejudices against Swift to be their own undoing. Let Johnson do his worst: posterity has given Swift his due. Lee Jaffe, compiler

This is an excellent biographical piece about Samuel Dibble which appears on the Wofford College website. WELCOME! This photograph of Samuel Dibble and Mary Christiana Louis was taken on their wedding day, November 10, 1864, less than three weeks after Lt. Dibble was released from Johnson's Island. Lt. Dibble rejoined his unit in early December 1864 and was later recaptured at Town Creek, North Carolina, in February 1865. "It is proper and useful to keep alive the memories of a past of which we need not be ashamed, and to impress upon the youth of our land the significance of the great struggle for Southern rights, and to set before them true pictures of the deeds of a generation fast pasing away. . . . We who are survivors endeavor to recall and relate to each other facts and incidents of a period of war, and we tell these to our children and to those who were then unborn, not in a spirit of vain-glorious boasting, exaggerating the importance of every trivial episode, such as the world never saw before and can never see again but simply to let the truth be known of sacrifice made that ought to have been made, of hardships endured that ought to have been endured, and of acts of courage which any brave man would do under similar circumstances."

    The Life of Pope
    By Samuel Johnson
Edited by Jack Lynch , Rutgers University
The text comes from The Lives of the Poets , ed. G. B. Hill, 3 vols. (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1905). I have tried to reproduce Hill's text as carefully as possible, departing from it in only the following instances:
    • Hill's paragraph numbers are preserved, but printed in brackets.
    • The oe ligature is reproduced as two letters.
    • The alignment of words on consecutive lines of poetry, which Johnson uses to indicate revision, is not always consistent; HTML does not easily allow that degree of control.
    • Single and double quotation marks are reversed.
    • A break between sections, indicated in the printed text by a skipped line, is indicated with a horizontal rule.
The text is also available in an abridged version , which includes only the passages most often discussed in literature classes. Please send corrections to Jack Lynch
    POPE
] ALEXANDER POPE was born in London, May 22, 1688, of parents whose rank or station was never ascertained: we are informed that they were of "gentle blood"; that his father was of a family of which the Earl of Downe was the head, and that his mother was the daughter of William Turner, Esquire, of York, who had likewise three sons, one of whom had the honour of being killed, and the other of dying, in the service of Charles the First; the third was made a general officer in Spain, from whom the sister inherited what sequestrations and forfeitures had left in the family. ] This, and this only, is told by Pope; who is more willing, as I have heard observed, to shew what his father was not, than what he was. It is allowed that he grew rich by trade; but whether in a shop or on the Exchange was never discovered, till Mr. Tyers told, on the authority of Mrs. Racket, that he was a linen-draper in the Strand. Both parents were papists.
