Located high on top of Cleopatra Hill (5,200 feet) between Prescott and Flagstaff is the historic copper mining town of Jerome, Arizona. Once known as the wickedest town in the west, Jerome was a copper mining camp, growing from a settlement of tents to a roaring mining community. Four disastrous fires destroyed large sections of the town during its early history, resulting in the incorporation of the City of Jerome in 1899. Founded in 1876, Jerome was once the fourth largest city in the Arizona Territory. The population peaked at 15,000 in the 1920's. The Depression of the 1930's slowed the mining operation and the claim went to Phelps Dodge, who holds the claim today. World War II brought increased demand for copper, but after the war, demand slowed. Dependant on the copper market, Phelps Dodge Mine closed in 1953. The remaining 50 to 100 hardy souls promoted the town as a historic ghost town. In 1967 Jerome was designated a National Historic District by the federal government. Today Jerome is a thriving tourist and artist community with a population of about 450.

23. Jerome Kern
Details his role in the evolution of musical theater, especially through Showboat.
http://www.kcmetro.cc.mo.us/pennvalley/biology/lewis/crosby/kern.htm
Jerome Kern: 1885-1945
by Joel Bernstein Jerome David Kern (born January 27, 1885, New York, New York., Died November 11, 1945, New York, N. Y.) American Composer. First hit, "How'd You Like To Spoon With Me", 1905. Composed nearly 700 songs for 117 shows and films between 1905 and 1945. Those are the bare bones-the statistics that cover the career of one of America's great composers of popular song. But the numbers can never sum up the contribution that Jerome Kern made to the American musical style. For Kern's romance with the musical theatre and film was to produce something new, a type of song unlike any theatre music before it. When Jerome Kern started writing and plugging his songs at the turn of the century the majority of American Theatre music was strongly influenced by the European, or "Viennese" style. Victor Herbert was the master of this kind of writing. Kern's songs, on the other hand, used a fresh, uncontrolled approach to melody which was to modernize the American musical theatre. That's not to say that Kern's music was simple. On the contrary, he was always developing, always experimenting but there were always, as Alec Wilder has said, "those melodies, straight and healthy, and ever green." Jerome Kern moved quickly from a rehearsal pianist and Tin Pan Alley song plugger to a writer whose music, by 1915, was represented in as many as seven or eight Broadway shows a season! Melody seemed to pour out of him and he was known to compose whole scores in a weeks time.

Jerome Klapka Jerome was born in Walsall, Staffordshire, England on May 2nd, 1859, the son of a preacher and coal mine owner. Leaving school at the age of fourteen after his mother's death, Jerome worked such diverse jobs as a railway clerk, a journalist, and a schoolmaster. Though also an actor, playwright, and editor, Jerome found fame through his writing. His first book, On Stage and Off , was published in 1888. Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow , a collection of essays, followed in 1886, and Jerome married Georgina Elizabeth Henrietta Stanley Marris in 1888. In 1889, Jerome published the humorous Three Men in a Boat , an account of a trip that Jerome, two friends, and a dog named Montmorency took up the River Thames. Though panned by critics, it was embraced by the public and brought Jerome fortune and fame. "I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours." (from Three Men in a Boat He continued to publish works, including the famous morality play, The Passing of the Third Floor Back (1907). Other works include

Jerome, Arizona
Text and photographs
by Howard A. Sheldon
A friendly glow greets the Central Arizona town of Jerome, Arizona. Visualize the warm morning sun rising over the cool mountains of the Mogollon Rim, "Plateau Country." The shop owners open their doors for the tourist trade and put some of their wares outside. The timbre of wind chimes and the essence of incense fills the air. Travelers from all over the world with brightly colored clothes, cameras around their necks and children in tow, file up and down the narrow streets and sidewalks. Later in the day, you may also find a few vintage Harley Davidsons parked outside one of the local watering holes. Jerome draws people from all walks (and rides) of life. Jerome's personality has changed dramatically in the past 30 years. Once a thriving mining camp between the late-1880s and early 1950s, Jerome is now a bustling tourist magnet and artistic community with a population of about 450. It includes a modicum of artists, craft people, musicians, writers, hermits, bed and breakfast owners, museum caretakers, gift shop proprietors and fallen-down-building landlords. Before the first Europeans visited the Verde Valley in the 16th century, the Sinaguas, Hohokams, Anasazis and Apaches called this area home. The rich mineral resources of the Black Hills were well known by these native peoples. When Antonio de Espejo and his companions traveled through these parts looking for gold and silver, the Indians readily showed them their mining operations. While the Indians were primarily mining for copper, there were rich deposits of gold and silver in those mines as well. But the Spaniards, noting only that there was silver, but no gold, moved on.

Jerome K. Jerome

Q. Let's go back to the time before the creation of the character Babysister. Had you previously developed any characters with a voice as strong as hers? What was it about Babysister that intrigued you?
A. First of all, thanks for noting Babysister's strong voice. She's so different from me and I worked very hard at keeping her voice consistent. Before writing Please Please Please, I only wrote short stories and a few poems. And yes, what drove all of the stories were the character's voices. I've always been drawn to characters I don't necessarily see in literature and usually they are women who make wrong choices and have to deal with the consequences. I enjoy creating "people" not necessarily plots. I'm especially interested in women who are flawed in some way and women who are different from me (not that I don't have my share of flaws!)
