In 1757, when Thomas was only fourteen, his father died, leaving him heir to an enormous estate. On his deathbed, his father left an order that his son’s education, already well advanced in a preparatory school, should be completed at the College of William and Mary, a circumstance which Thomas always remembered with gratitude, saying that if he had to choose between the education and the estate his father left him, he would choose the education. His public life began on May 11, 1769, when Jefferson took his seat as a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, George Washington also being a member. Jefferson was then twenty-six years old. On becoming a public man he made a resolution “never to engage, while in public office, in any kind of enterprise for the improvement of my fortune, nor to wear any other character than that of a farmer.” On the close of his public career of nearly half a century, he could say that he had kept this resolution. On January 1, 1772 Jefferson married Martha Wayles Skelton, who was the daughter of John Wayles, a wealthy Williamsburg lawyer, from whom she inherited a large property. Her first husband, Bathurst Skelton died before she was twenty years of age, and Jefferson was one of her many suitors. A few days after their marriage, he took her to live in his partly constructed mountaintop home, Monticello. The next year, the death of Martha’s father brought them a great increase of fortune – doubling Jefferson’s estate.

Woolner was born to Thomas and Rebecca ( née Leeks) Woolner in Suffolk. He was educated at Ipswich, and at the age of twelve studied sculpture with William Behnes. In December 1842, at the age of seventeen, he exhibited a model of "Eleanor sucking the Poison from the arm of Prince Edward" at the Royal Academy. By the time he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti in 1847, Woolner had won the 1845 Society of the Arts medal for "Affection," a model of a woman and two children, and the Academy exhibition for his bas-relief, "Alastor," was well-received. His bronze model of Puck attracted the attention of Tennyson, to whom he was later introduced by Patmore, and who became the subject of two famous busts. His acquaintance with Dante Gabriel Rossetti escalated to membership in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, but despite "My Beautiful Lady," Woolner averred to William Bell Scott that "[p]oetry is not my proper work in this world; I must sculpture it, not write it." Yet his success in sculpture and medallion portraiture yielded only modest financial reward, prompting him to try his luck in the Australian goldfields. When he sailed for Melbourne on 24 July 1852 the Rossettis, Hunt, and Ford Madox Brown accompanied him on board. When the Australian venture proved unsuccessful, Woolner returned to England in 1854, seeking a commission for a statue of William Charles Wentworth, the father of Australian self-government. Failing this, he continued with busts of distinguished men. In 1857 he completed his Trinity College Tennyson, followed by his bearded Tennyson in 1873. His medallion of Wordsworth (now at Grasmere Church), among others, is credited with restoring the art of medallion portraiture. In 1871 he was named associate of the Royal Academy, where he was made academician in 1874.

Thomas Jefferson on Separation of Church and State
The Danbury Baptist Association, concerned about religious liberty in the new nation wrote to President Thomas Jefferson, Oct. 7, 1801.
Sir, Among the many millions in America and Europe who rejoice in your Election to office; we embrace the first opportunity which we have enjoyd in our collective capacity, since your Inauguration, to express our great satisfaction, in your appointment to the chief Majestracy in the United States; And though our mode of expression may be less courtly and pompious than what many others clothe their addresses with, we beg you, Sir to believe, that none are more sincere. Our Sentiments are uniformly on the side of Religious Liberty That Religion is at all times and places a matter between God and individuals That no man ought to suffer in name, person, or effects on account of his religious Opinions - That the legitimate Power of civil government extends no further than to punish the man who works ill to his neighbor And may the Lord preserve you safe from every evil and bring you at last to his Heavenly Kingdom through Jesus Christ our Glorious Mediator.

What effect does the USPS' status as a monopoly have on the Virginia economy? Plenty. This report inventories the government-granted competitive advantages enjoyed by the Postal Service, allowing it to unfairly compete with private, taxpaying Virginia firms. It illustrates the impact of the USPS tax exemption on state and local government from corporate income to property and BPOL taxes during a time of budgetary constraints.
