103. THOMAS JEFFERSON'S VIEWS ON WOMEN - The Early America Review - Fall 1997
Carefully researched article from The Early America Review, Fall 1997.
http://earlyamerica.com/review/fall97/jeffersn.html
Thomas Jefferson's Views on Women By Thomas O. Jewett
T his study explores Jefferson's views on women largely through his own words. It attempts to put these views in the context of Jefferson's era and culture and not in contemporary times. Thomas Jefferson
T homas Jefferson stands as an infallible oracle to today's society. Both ends of the political spectrum quote him as evidence for their causes. While Jefferson's words seem to have credence for contemporary events, it must be remembered that he wrote them for the eighteenth century. As Joseph Ellis so eloquently stated in his book the American Sphinx, "Lifting Jefferson out of that context and bringing him into the present is like trying to plant cut flowers." (Ellis, 1997, P.292). It is with some trepidation, therefore, that the author explores Jefferson's views concerning women. His opinions should not be gauged by today's standards, but by that of his time, geography, and class.
J efferson lived, chronologically, midway between the Age of Reason with its trust in science, and the Romantic Era with its uninhibited emotionalism. Both, in uneasy coexistence, can be seen in Jefferson's character and views. As a romantic he enjoyed, especially in his youth, a sentimental emotional life. But, he also recognized that this romantic side to his nature threatened to take charge the pure reason of the mind he valued so highly.
A s a young man, Jefferson rejected the Stoic ideal of disdain for human passion, desire, and enjoyment of things usually accounted good in this world...Jefferson found himself drawn to the Epicurean ethic, which, while admitting the reality and the necessity of the passions, sought to control them by the exercise of reason. The passions, constituted the true life of man, they must be kept under tight rein in order to attain the serenity, tranquillity, happiness, and right conduct sought by every man. (Miller, 1995, P.178).

Jefferson, Thomas, The Papers of, The Papers, when completed, will include 18,000 letters written by Jefferson, 25,000 letters written to him, his public papers, and all his writings on the varied topics his wide-ranging mind touched upon in Professor Gilbert Chinard's words, ``the richest treasure house of historical information ever left done by a single man.'' Julian Boyd has been editor of the Papers from the beginning. Serving as associate editors for a time were Mrs. Mina R. Bryan (1944-1956) and Lyman H. Butterfield (1946-1951). Douglas Southall Freeman was chairman of the advisory committee from 1944 to 1953, Fiske Kimball from 1953 to 1955, David K. E. Bruce '19 from 1955 to 1977. Jefferson visited Princeton in 1783 as a member of the Continental Congress, which met that year in Nassau Hall. Princeton gave him an honorary LL.D. in 1791; as President Dodds has pointed out, the College showed a fine sense of balance by awarding the same degree at the same time to Alexander Hamilton. Jefferson gave Princeton $100 toward rebuilding Nassau Hall after th~e fire of 1802. Go to Search A Princeton Companion

Welcome to the Deism / Age of Reason Reference Page!
NEW as of 1/21/2002:
Now Available : the full text of Elihu Palmer's Principles of Nature in pdf format!
(Elihu Palmer was a contemporary of Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, and this work, along with Age of Reason and Reason the Only Oracle of Man was one of the leading statements of Deism in the American Founding Period.)

The purpose of this page is to provide a resource for people interested in exploring American Deism, particularly as presented in Thomas Paine's Age of Reason It is not the purpose of this page to serve as a focus for across-the-board anti-Christian propaganda. In fact, many of the positions stated by the Deist authors referenced here are compatible with basic Christian precepts. More importantly, even a cursory reading of these authors establishes that they were not Atheists, as they are sometimes painted today, but instead held a deep belief grounded in reasoned analysis that God exists, and that Atheism is to be resisted no less than is religious fanaticism. An understanding of the views of these authors is essential to an understanding the American Founding Fathers, who incorporated many of these ideas in their natural law political philosophy..
