Who is Nature's God?

When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.[1] In the "Declaration of Independence," the founding document of what would become the United States, Thomas Jefferson mentions "nature's God." Unfortunately, this phrase is unclear. The religious beliefs of Jefferson were much debated in his time and still are over two centuries later. Through the letters and other writings of Jefferson, it is possible to construct an outline of his beliefs. Although he supported the moral teachings of Jesus, Jefferson believed in a creator similar to the God of deism. In the tradition of deism, Jefferson based his God on reason and rejected revealed religion. Jefferson's parents reared him in the Episcopal Church. Although there is no known record of him being baptized, it is almost certain that an Anglican clergyman baptized him. Records show that both Thomas Jefferson and his father Peter were elected vestrymen. These positions, however, merely reflected the Jeffersons' social status; they were both land-owning and educated men. The positions were given "with small regard to their personal convictions or even their way of life."[2]

There is one more addition to the list of possible limitations for the smoking policy:
h) You must get your parents to sign that you are an addicted smoker.
We are adding this because a good point was brought up in the forum. The smoking-permitted cons are a good place for people to have their first smoke and get hooked. That's not something the DYSC would want to be responsible for.
We'd also decided to postpone the Smoking Policy Vote until next week, when it has been discussed more and more people have had a chance to write what they think in the forum. Smoking Policy Forum :: Smoking Policy Vote:: Over the past few weeks, the issue of smoking at cons has been brought to the attention of the officers, and has been debated over. The officers are having a hard time coming to consensus, and we would like to open up the voting to all DYSC church representatives. We have posted the policies online, and you, your youth group, and your DRE may feel free to look at them and openly post your opinions on them in the forums. We are opening the polls on next Wednesday (the 20th) The votes will be tallied, and if the district has been voted to be a smoking district, the aspects of the policy which received the most votes (number of aspects to be determined according to number of votes) will become part of the TJDYSC policy. This policy will be written up formally by the Officers and presented to the RE Committee for approval, as they have the final say in whether or not this policy will be adopted formally.

Virginia has a rich garden history. Gardening was a necessary activity providing food for the family and pleasurable settings for study and relaxation. While the smaller gardens of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries did not survive, the James River Plantations, Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, and Monticello provide a wealth of information on gardening in the eighteenth century. The Garden Club of Virginia has sponsored the restoration of many of Virginia's historic gardens. Early gardens were generally formally laid out. Vegetable, herb, and flower gardens were often merged and gardeners took great pride in the utilitarian and aesthetic qualities of their gardens. Wide grass walks symmetrically divided the gardens with identical beds flanking the edges. The borders were often graced with a large variety of flowers, as noted by one early observer, including "pinks and a thousand other flowers, the remaining part planted with beans, peas, cabbage, and many other articles." Fruit trees grew along the border of the garden and ornamental shrubs graced one end. From the time of Plato's "groves of academe," gardens have been linked to the contemplative and scholarly life as well. Jefferson described the University as a set of buildings "arranged around an open square of grass and trees." The Pavilion Gardens provided both a place in which to study and a subject of study. Jefferson wrote that "such a plan would afford the quiet retirement so friendly to study."

    Birthplace: Baltimore County, Maryland Benjamin Banneker: Mathematician, Astronomer Benjamin Banneker, the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky was born in 1731. His grandfather was a slave from Africa and his grandmother, an indentured servant from England. His grandfather was known as Banna Ka, then later as Bannaky, his grandmother as Molly Walsh. His grandmother was a maid in England who had been sent to Maryland as an indentured servant. When she finished her seven years of bondage, she bought a farm along with two slaves to help her take care of it. Walsh freed both slaves and married one, Bannaky. They had several children, among them a daughter named Mary. When Mary Bannaky grew up, she bought a slave named Robert, married him and had several children, including Benjamin. Benjamin Banneker grew up on the family farm. Around town it was known as "Bannaky Springs" due to the fresh water springs on the land. Bannaky used ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs for irrigation. His work was so reliable that the Bannaky's crops flourished even in dry spells. The family of free blacks raised good tobacco crops all the time. Molly, Banneker's grandmother, taught him and his brothers to read, using her Bible as a lesson book. There was no school in the valley for the boys to attend. Then one summer, a Quaker school teacher came to live in the valley. He set up a school for boys. Benjamin Bannaky attended this school. The schoolmaster changed the spelling of his name to Banneker. At school he learned to write and do simple arithmetic.

    The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth was released to the public in 1904. Compiled by the Unites States of America's third president, Thomas Jefferson, around 1819-1820, The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth is a look at the Four Gospels of the Christian New Testament through the eyes of a rationalist. The work is little more than a rearrangement of the Gospels, with numerous miracles and references to Jesus's divinity as well as redundancies between the Gospel writers cut out. Jefferson did add a table of contents to his book, which is reproduced here, and added parallel translations in three other languages beside the English translation. These are not reproduced here. Except for the lack of parallel translations I left Jefferson's compilation intact. The fonts used for this document are sans-serif, specifically Bitstream Vera Sans, and the words of Jesus are colored a light violet.
