Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Feature article on the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, reviewed from the viewpoint of a follower of Christ, by Ben Jeapes
Cast:
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, James Marsters, Anthony Head, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson Producer Joss Whedon's idea was simple: in clichéd vampire films, the undead traditionally prey on young, blonde women. Why not have a young, blonde woman who is able to fight back? The very title, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is meant to raise a smile. In every generation, the Buffy legend has it, one young woman is born who is gifted with unusual strength and reflexes, and a special ability to stake vampires. In this generation, that young woman is a bubble-headed Californian High School cheerleader. The original film starring Kristy Swanson, was not a success, but it did well enough to get Whedon recognized in Hollywood and to let him float the idea for a television series. The first season followed directly on from the film: our heroine, now played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, is forced to leave her old school after burning part of it down (the fact that it was full of vampires at the time cut little ice with the authorities), and moves to a new town. Despite her initial determination to steer clear of anything sensitive to ultraviolet, she soon finds that trouble comes to her. Aided by a group of friends and her Watcher, the paternal Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head, the man from the Gold Blend advertisements), Buffy fights evil every week.

http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/misc/bj.htm
Ben Jeapes Ben Jeapes ( www.jeapes.ndirect.co.uk ) was overexposed in early childhood to Dr Who Thunderbirds and Star Trek , which set him on the science fiction trail, but what really engrained the stuff in him was the discovery that it comes in the written form. He started writing science fiction himself at the age of 18 in the mistaken belief that it would be quite easy and might save him having to get a job. He has still managed to sell 18 short stories and 3 novels. His ambition is to live to be 101 and 7 months, so as to reach the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings and the arrival of the man responsible for Ben's unusual surname a Danish mercenary called Jep, whose name features in the Domesday Book and who fought for William the Conqueror in the British Isles. It's not everyone who gets to celebrate a thousandth family anniversary. Ben's other ambition is to have descendants of his own by the time he's 101, so they can remind him what he's staying alive for. He likes cats, good food, an occasional trip to the cinema and not being broke. He loathes stereotypes, junk mail both paper and electronic, boy and girl bands, and TV sport. He is English, and as quietly proud of the fact as you would expect of the descendant of a Danish mercenary who fought for a bunch of Norsemen living in northern France.

ISSN: 1476-8798 check out website: www.3sfmag.co.uk A n item about the publisher Big Engine appeared a couple of issues ago in Crowsnest and only last month we had a review of ‘3SF’, their new magazine which was in the process of emerging into the haphazard and dangerous Science Fiction universe. Sadly and suddenly, both are gone probably never to live again! Uncle Geoff told me about 3SF's demise before I read issue 3 to review it for our magazine. This made the task a rather depressing exercise, almost like knowing the end of a story before reading it. Pages seemingly full of hope and promise for the future were tainted with the sombre sadness of an undertaker's procession, a procession to the graveyard where hundreds of other magazines already rest in peace and anonymity. ‘3SF’ was probably doomed before it began. Launching a new magazine is an incredibly risky enterprise. Requiring a big publisher to launch it, Big Engine didn't have sufficient thrust to get it going because it was apparently already on the sickbed itself. Like an experimental rocket from the sixties, it took off only to crash into the ocean.

The Xenocide Mission
by Ben Jeapes
Ben Jeapes' "young adult" novels have an air of bygone straightforwardness about them good, honest science fiction, like Grandma used to make but coupled with this is a modern sensibility that lends them a richness of texture to rival the best of contemporary "adult" SF. Jeapes' aliens are, well, alien, with alien ways and alien bodies. His human characters have to work hard to deal with them politically and socially. Admittedly, these aliens do have handy-dandy translator devices that allow them to speak to the humans, but I suppose it'd be a pretty short novel if they didn't. At least they don't all speak impeccable English already. The Xenocide Mission picks up where His Majesty's Starship left off, with an egalitarian Commonwealth of Humans and First Breed (or "Rusties") quietly observing the world of the Kin (the eponymous Xenocides, or "XCs"). The Kin are relatively new to space travel; their last observed flight was an interplanetary expedition to a neighbouring world, where they exterminated another alien species, apparently for no reason. The Commonwealth is naturally concerned that the Kin might develop or discover the step-through technology that allows Humans and Rusties to socialise, and start wiping out other civilisations. So it's cause for panic when a Kin attack squad sneaks up unnoticed on a concealed Commonwealth observation post, wreaks carnage and discovers the step-through technology mentioned above.

Trust, betrayal, hidden agendas and ulterior motives, inter-species misunderstandings and loyalties, all are dealt with deftly and intelligently, making this a very satisfying read."
SF Crowsnest
full review: external link "There's enough action, well-rounded characters and tech-speak here to keep older, more jaded readers entertained ... the use of multiple viewpoints works well, providing a timely reminder that pointless wars can be triggered by nothing more than arrogance, paranoia and misinformation. Just like the real world."
SFX full review "The book is, unfortunately, timely. It neatly and unpatronisingly points to the double standards we apply in politics: we are exploring, you are invading; we are ignorant, you are stupid; we recognise authority, you are slavish and therefore suitable to be enslaved; and it goes beyond this. By the end of the book there are new questions to be asked about the First Breed, and other new questions about the universe."

Catapulted suddenly from command of an obscure patrol ship to command of the starship Ark Royal , Michael Gilmore must carry the Crown Prince of UK1 to the conference with the aliens that will decide which nation will be chosen to jointly develop a new planet. But in an international interstellar interspecies negotiation with the future of the race at stake there is skulduggery to be expected from all quarters. The fate of both species depends on a simple man's ability to see through the web of lies and deceit, to know when to fight and when to talk, when to obey and when to rebel.
I didn't have time for this book; I was revising for an exam. Foolishly I took a break and read the first few chapters. As a thriller, gripping, as science fiction, fascinating. Cunning twists in the plot hurl the reader unexpectedly from one pupil-dilating peril to another. Make sure you have time for this because once you have started you can't stop. There's a rather nice Website for the book.
