The books are being marketed as Young Adult books, and they work very well as such, though they are fully enjoyable to adults, in my view. (The lead characters include two humans in their early twenties, as well as a much older human, and an apparently much older alien.) I haven't read the first book myself but the sequel stood alone quite well. If given the choice, you might prefer to start with

EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE What Merry Jeapes we Played Ben Jeapes, founder of science fiction book publisher Big Engine and the great new 3SF magazine, interviewed by our Hunty on the tricky act of keeping the drool from running down his gibbering physiognomy while running a burgeoning SF empire. What made you want to set up your own SFF publishing house? I didn't! I wanted to set up my own academic, or at least non-fiction, publishing house. The market for such is much more clearly defined and, unlike fiction, doesn't depend on something so ephemeral as the public's taste.
Ben Jeapes. He laughs at danger. All my publishing experience was for small academic publishers: being in a small publisher is far preferable to being a small wheel in a march larger machine, but it does mean you hit your head on the ceiling very soon. Promotion prospects past a certain point aren't good, because chances are that the company is privately owned and the owners are the ones at the top. So, for several years I had had a feeling that one day I would be starting my own company. When the decision was suddenly thrust upon me by my losing my job, however, I had no contacts or particular interests in non-fiction fields that weren't already adequately covered. So it had to be what I probably knew best, which is SF.

T he year is 2153. Lt. Joel Gilmore is part of a team based at the SkySpy asteroid in a distant star system, covertly and closely observing an alien race known as the XCs - XC short for Xenocides, so called because of their "nasty predilection for mass murder on a planetary scale" (back cover). The team consists of humans and 'rusties', the First Breed, a sentient quadruped species with no conception of humour - which makes for occasionally uneasy interpersonal relationships - and a profound emotional interdependency on the pride, their social unit. When the XC's launch a completely unexpected attack on the SkySpy base, Joel and the rustie Boon Round find themselves the only survivors and the only ones left to somehow tell their respective species that the XCs now have the ability to leave their homeworld and venture out into the galaxy...
It's a fascinating story. The author has real skill in depicting aliens and alien cultures (and I do mean alien, not just variants of humanoids): there are three quite distinct and wholly believable species detailed in the book, not including the humans. The characterisation is excellent, the individuals memorable and appealing.

(I once met someone at a Con who pictured me as short, dark haired and bearded. Don't ask me why, except that perhaps it's because you get a lot of short, dark(ish/greying) haired and bearded people at Cons. You tend to meet their bellies before anything else.)
