Photo: Philippe Halsman Poet, critic and teacher, Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Anna (Campbell) and Owen Jarrell on May 6, 1914. He attended Vanderbilt University as a day student with a small National Youth Administration allowance. While there he edited the Masquerader, won a letter as captain of the tennis team, made Phi Beta Kappa and graduated magna cum laude. At Vanderbilt, Jarrell studied under Robert Penn Warren, who first published his criticism; Allen Tate, who first published his poetry; and John Crowe Ransom, who gave him his first teaching job—Freshman Composition and Tennis Coach at Kenyon, during the year that he finished his master's degree from Vanderbilt. Before leaving Kenyon, Jarrell became friends with the future fiction writer Peter Taylor and the future poet Robert Lowell who became his closest confidants and allies for the rest of his life. Moving on to the University of Texas, Jarrell met and married Mackie Langham, a colleague. During World War II, he enlisted and served as a technical sergeant teaching celestial navigation until the war ended. Then he spent a year in New York as acting literary editor of The Nation and teaching at Sarah Lawrence. Returning to the south, Jarrell came to Woman's College (later renamed UNC-Greensboro) and remained there, except for leaves of absence, for the rest of his life.

Jarrell Randall Editorial Review from Amazon
No Other Book
- Book Review, by Jarrell, Randall

"Most critics," Randall Jarrell wrote in a 1952 essay, "are so domesticated as to seem institutionsas they stand there between reader and writer, so different from either, they remind one of the Wall standing between Pyramus and Thisbe." His complaint was as accurate then as it is now. Yet Jarrell himself had nothing of the literary obstructionist to him. The essays he wrote over the course of three decadesin which he mingled his assessments of poetry and prose with the occasional cri de coeur over the state of American civilizationalways escort the reader directly into the inner sanctum of the work at hand. And they do so with such scintillating, comical brilliance that most other criticism seems to pale into testy insignificance. We should be grateful, then, that Brad Leithauser has assembled No Other Book, which returns to print many of Jarrell's imperishable picks and pans. Jarrell's slash-and-burn style caused a certain discomfort among his fellow poets, particularly those who fell short of his sky-high standards. And indeed, his inspired jabs have lost little of their pungency or amusement: Oscar Williams's poetry, for example, "gave the impression of having been written on a typewriter by a typewriter." Even Walt Whitman, whose reputation Jarrell single-handedly repaired, gets the occasional spanking. Only a man with the most extraordinary feel for language, or none whatsoever, could have cooked up Whitman's worst messes. For instance: what other man in all the history of this planet would have said, "I am a habitant of Vienna"? (One has an immediate vision of him as a sort of French Canadian halfbreed to whom the Viennese are offering, with trepidation, through the bars of a zoological garden, little mounds of whipped cream.)

Echoes Main Biography Sample Poetry Inspired Poems ... Bibliography Randall Jarrell: The Great World War Two Poet By: Diana Woodall Randall Jarrell is best known for his World War II poetry in which he depicts the extreme fears and struggles of the soldiers who fought and died. Poet Robert Fitzgerald describes him as "practically the only American poet able to cope with the Second Great War." (The Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry. Page 900). Initially inspired by Professor John Crowe Ransom, Jarrell’s early poems describe the struggles of growing up, political situations, and death. Later in his life, Jarrell takes on the role of deceased soldiers trying to understand life, and writes about "stark subjects in intentionally bitter tones" (American Cultural Leaders. www.bigchalk.com). Jarrell was born in Nashville Tennessee in 1914. In 1915, his family moved to the west coast, and he spent most of his childhood in Long Beach, and Hollywood, California. When Jarrell was only 11 years old, his parents divorced and he was sent to live with his grandparents. In high school, Jarrell took business courses, but he soon came under the influence of John Ransom and realized that he wanted to write poetry instead. Jarrell attended Vanderbilt University and received a bachelor’s and master’s degree. He then went to teach English at Kenyon Collage. In 1939, Jarrell accepted a new teaching position at the University of Texas at Austin, where he met his first wife, Mackie Langham. Jarrell’s early poems began to appear in many newspapers and magazines such as The American Review, The Southern View, and the Kenyon Review.

Losses
by Randall Jarrell
It was not dying: everybody died.
It was not dying: we had died before
In the routine crashes and our fields
Called up the papers, wrote home to our folks,
And the rates rose, all because of us.
We died on the wrong page of the almanac,
Scattered on mountains fifty miles away;
Diving on haystacks, fighting with a friend,
We blazed up on the lines we never saw.
We died like aunts or pets or foreigners.
(When we left high school nothing else had died
For us to figure we had died like.)
In our new planes, with our new crews, we bombed
The ranges by the desert or the shore,
Fired at towed targets, waited for our scores
And turned into replacements and worke up
One morning, over England, operational.
It wasn't different: but if we died
It was not an accident but a mistake
(But an easy one for anyone to make.)
We read our mail and counted up our missions
In bombers named for girls, we burned
The cities we had learned about in school
Till our lives wore out; our bodies lay among

Add to a Notebook Randall Jarrell Randall Jarrell was born in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1914. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Vanderbilt University. From 1937 to 1939 he taught at Kenyon College, where he met John Crowe Ransom and Robert Lowell , and then at the University of Texas. His first book of poems, Blood for a Stranger , was published in 1942, the same year he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He soon left the Air Corps for the army and worked as a control tower operator, an experience which provided much material for his poetry. Jarrell's reputation as a poet was established in 1945, while he was still serving in the army, with the publication of his second book, Little Friend, Little Friend , which bitterly and dramatically documents the intense fears and moral struggles of young soldiers. Other volumes followed, all characterized by great technical skill, empathy with the lives of others, and an almost painful sensitivity. Following the war, Jarrell accepted a teaching position at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and remained there, except for occasional absences to teach elsewhere, until his death. Even more than for his poems, Jarrell is highly regarded as a peerless literary essayist, and was considered the most astute (and most feared) poetry critic of his generation. Randall Jarrell was struck by a car and killed at the age of 50 in 1965, in a death that may or may not have been a suicide.

H Blood for a Stranger , in 1942. Meanwhile, encouraged by Edmund Wilson, who published him in The New Republic, he made a reputation for himself as a fierce and fiercely humorous critic of other poets. His penchant for the devasting one-line dismissal (e.g. Oscar Williams's poems give the impression of 'having been written on a typewriter by a typewritee) caused recipients acute pain, but established Jarrell, in his twenties, as a highly readable force to be reckoned with. In 1942 he entered the Army Air Force, but failed to qualify as a flyer and became a celestial training navigator in Tucson, Arizona. During his nearly four years of service he wrote many poems about the army and the war, accumulating the bulk of his next two books, Little Friend, Little Friend (1945) and Losses (1948). In these poems his earlier, Audenesque style modulated into a flatter, greyer, more homely idiom, appropriate for recreating the dailyness of barracks life as well as the disasters of combat. During the latter part of his service, in 1945, he wrote a number of letters to Lowell about the manuscript of Lowell's soon-to-be-published book of poems, Lord Weary's Castle letters filled with valuable suggestions for improving what Jarrell thought would be the most important poetry collection since Auden's Poems (1930). After the war Jarrell spent a year as literary editor of the
