By: Tiffany Alexy “They buy from the Black Riviera,/That silently appears as if risen,/The apotheosis of wet asphalt,/And smeary-silvery glare,/And plush inner touchability www.poets.org ) These lines come from the poem "The Black Riviera" by M ark Jarman. His poems tend to be based on corrupted ideas, and none are positive or enlightening. Though his poems aren’t the most cheerful, he is still an accomplished poet and has won many awards including the 1991 Poets Prize for his poem “The Black Riviera”. While attending the University of California, Santa Cruz, he studied with both Raymond Carver and the poet George Hitchcock, the editor and publisher of a modest magazine called Kayak . Jarman has published many books with various authors, such as Reaper with Robert McDowell, whom he met at the University of California. Mark Jarman has also published a remarkable memoir, called Tonight is the Night of the Prom . It is about his childhood, and although he wrote most of the poems about his life barely past his teenage years, the style is outstanding and has been kept consistent.

I get in a fight with two women in the mall parking lot, a mother-daughter tag team. Then in the woods a sleek cougar nearly takes my head off, but I said ix-nay. The story was, I was going to chop us a free Christmas tree, but feeling base and mortal and morbid and pretty fine I collected every damn pill in the trailer, including Flintstones and Aspirin and iron and old tiny Infant Tylenol bottles. What the hell, I'll try anything once. In my pockets I had a dog's breakfast of pills and I felt like a dog, felt lower than a snake's belly. Things had gone wonky. No jobs in the woods, our old mill sold to foreigners, and foreigners shut it down tight. They don't live here. New softwood agreement too, and Asia gone down the tubes, so we're going right with them, they sneeze and we blow our nose. A letter falls into my black mailbox: they talk of markets, infrastructure, capital costs, mergers, new realities. I imagine them fine-tuning this letter in a meeting over Danish and mineral water. Do they actually know any more than we do? My tiddly little house is for sale but it's never going to sell because every nice little house is for sale there. I pawned the Husqvarna and moved down island. Everyone laid off. We're global now.

Mark Jarman April, 2001 AOM archive Mark Jarman probably wouldn't think of himself this way, but he is a courageous man. And courage is a rare commodity at any time, and especially so in the small, competitive world of American literary culture. As a champion of the formalist tradition in poetry and as a writer unafraid to place religious faith and doubt at the center of his work, Jarman has put himself at odds with many of the prevailing trends of our time. Yet for all this, his poetry does not propagandize, preach, or promote an agenda. His poetic diction and form tread the fine line between the artist's control of language and thought and the uncontrollable realities of doubt, fear, and desire. His work is intelligent without being pedantic. The language is direct. Here is a poet who, unlike J. Alfred Prufrock, is willing to ask the Overwhelming Question. In "Unholy Sonnet" Jarman uses a plural first person speaker. Who does he mean by "we"? 2. Who does he mean by "you" in stanzas two and four? Are they the same? 3. Read Thessalonians 4:17. How does that verse relate to the poem? Do you need to know the verse in order to understand the full meaning of the poem's images, or does the poem stand on its own? 4. Compare Jarman's treatment of the Thessalonians verse to Scott Cairns' treatment of Exodus 13:22 in "September 11." Cairns quotes it and puts it at the front. Do these two ways of referencing Biblical verses indicate or encourage different interpretations of how the verses relate to the poems? 5. Do you think that "our names and faces" can "save us" as the last line says? In what ways? Activities 1. Write a poem in the form of a sonnet. Kurt's got a keg of Big Rock Traditional Ale and the new Radiohead CD, some serious tuneage. Come on down, Kurt says, come on down! I hop the Westjet and Margaret Atwood is the stewardess, Margaret Atwood pointing out the four emergency exits, Margaret Atwood asserting that no one has ever really seen those plastic oxygen masks yet we cling to our belief that masks are actually there, waiting for us like a parent, our Lacanian masks waiting to drop. Margaret Atwood says, Maybe my message is bleak because it needs to be bleak. She says the seat belt parts fit into each other like a hook into an eye, my hook, your eye. She lights a smoke, mutters, Screw the pilot and his feeble No Smoking light, it's a power issue, it's all political in nature. His phony blue uniform and drycleaning bills that could feed a third world village. Her monotone voice rises: If a stewardess ceases to be critical, ceases to judge her world she'll find herself in one infinitely more turbulent. I sigh and peer out the plane's tiny window, look down miles and see Margaret Atwood's giant face on the side of an orange United Farmers of Alberta grain elevator. Her giant face is live, mischievous, moving, gnomish. The elevator is like a drive-in movie screen. Her giant face winks largely at me, but then a double hook punctures her giant eye and the UFA elevator bursts into flame, rocketing burning timbers and burning grain across the street of the hamlet, grey charnel smoke enveloping the town and time going sideways under dead light from the stars.

Tears sprang to my eyes as I ate my onion. Why were they so cruel? Tears tears tears. At Zeller's the This Till Closed sign came up just as our turn finally arrives. On TV ads we had to add $2.50 for shipping and handling. Our car seemed worse after the mechanic finished. The mechanic, cleaning his hands with an oily rag, obviously doesn't like our kind. Polls came out: 47% 45% 49% For? Against? Nothing in those dark days was clear. There was referendum after referendum, changing interest rates, shortages of egg salad and hockey tape. I still have nightmares about being pulled from bed at dawn: lessons, groggy, croissant crumbs falling from the corners of my mouth, strangers telling me to smash an orange tennis ball. Jumping into a cold pool. Naked grotesque bodies in the change rooms. I just tried to survive, as a child does, never knowing what fresh horrors each day might bring.
