MARK JARMAN
Happiness: The Aesthetics of Donald Justice In his first book, The Summer Anniversaries , he took on traditional forms like the sonnet, the sestina, and the villanelle, and for each, particularly the sestina and the villanelle, enlivened the forms through variations. A sestina might drop its envoy, a villanelle might become even more demanding in an abbreviated form. Verse itself was a heuristic game, as it probably always should be, so that in a poem like "In Bertram's Garden," one realizes that most of the possibilities of the tetrameter line have been explored, and all of them beautifully. Soon the purple dark must bruise
Lily and bleeding heart and rose,
And the little Cupid lose
Eyes and ears and chin and nose,
And Jane lie down with others soon
Naked to the naked moon.
"In Bertram's Garden"

mark jarman Cul de Sac Idyll The flycatcher feeds its young a lightning bug, frantically blinking.
The trees forget the hurricane as they stand still for days.
The defibrillator sleeps in a lump above our neighbor's shirt pocket.
The flycatcher snagging its prey squirms like a trout in midair.
The dogwoods this spring blew all their savings on taffeta.
The cardiac muscle fibers shudder like untimed pistons.
The flycatcher's beak is a leggy mouthful of bent pins.
The poplars go first, brownbagging their leaves, one by one.
One false move and the defibrillator kicks like a hoof.
There are words that stop and start sunlight, moonlight, and starlight,
Verbs like the motion of thought, nouns like dreams and daydreams

Mark Jarman The Word "Answer" "Prayer exerts an influence upon God's action, even
upon his existence. This is what the word 'answer' means."
Karl Barth, Prayer
Lightning walks across the shallow seas,
Stick figures putting feet down hard
Among the molecules. Meteors dissolve
And drop their pieces in a mist of iron,
Drunk through atomic skin like dreamy wine.
The virus that would turn a leaf dark red
Seizes two others that would keep it green.
They spread four fingers like a lizard's hand. Into this random rightness comes the prayer, A change of weather, a small shift of degree That heaves a desert where a forest sweated, And asks creation to return an answer. That's all it wants: a prayer just wants an answer, And will twist time into a knot to get it. There's the door. Will anybody get it? That's what he's wondering; the bath's still warm; And by the time he towels off and puts on His pajamas, robe, and slippers and goes down, They'll be gone, won't they? There's the door again; And nobody's here to answer it but him.

The eponymous "Reaper," a composite personality of Jarman and Robert McDowell, writes articles, manifestoes, and interviews. Attacking the dominance of confessional, deep-image, and meditative poetry, The Reaper flamboyantly lays out a plan for reform. Almost fascistically directive, a 1981 essay entitled " The Reaper's Non-Negotiable Demands" included these ten commandments:

R. C. Travis "At the end of the twentieth century, the relationship between God and humankind is more troubling and urgent than ever. The poems in ‘Questions for Ecclesiastes', especially the section of Unholy Sonnets, deal with the age-old problems of religious faith in fresh, new ways . . . Poem after poem confronts the silence of heaven and tries to make it speak." Story Line Press Release Jarman's book of poems, Questions for Ecclesiastes , went into its second printing with Story Line Press in Sept. 1998. The book is a collection of discussions with God, meditations on holiness and man's relationship with a God whose answer to prayer is usually silence. The book is divided into five sections of poems (and a preface poem), the preface poem and fifth section, both consisting of one poem each. Ground Swell, the solitary poem in the preface, focuses on Jarman's contemplations as an adolescent on meaning and his reaction to an older surfer who ‘noticed' him. This older surfer later died in the Vietnam War and Jarman's father, a minister, performed the funeral. There is a wistfulness about the poem and thoughts on self-worth. Jarman ends the poem with comments that this is where the search for God and meaning in life began for him. Yes, I can write about a lot of things

Jarman, Mark In Sickness and Health
Genre Poem Keywords Caregivers Illness and the Family Marital Discord Summary In a short 28 lines, Jarman captures the hothouse images of a bout of fever and the dreariness of an urban apartment where he recuperates under the care of his spouse. He can feel the way that, as he gets better, his wife's emotions unravel. She has suppressed her hatred of the apartment and the cityand perhaps, of his requirements of her as a nurse, despite the title's reference to marriage vows. As she cries, Jarman addresses himself in conclusion: "You have married the patient wait for exhaustion." Commentary It is easy to forget that many illnesses never reach hospitals or the care of strangers. Family membersand especially female family membersattend the sick in most non-life-threatening situations. But care at home by family members has its problems.
