James McNeill Whistler A Review by Mark Harden James McNeill Whistler, the painter of that most American of worksthe very icon of American motherhood"Arrangement in Grey and Black" (better known, of course, as "Whistler's Mother"), ironically left the United States at the age of twenty-one, never to return. Whistler lived as an expatriate, alternating between London and Paris depending on the local artistic climate at the time. Egotistical, abrasive, and yet extremely talented, he stands as an isolated figure in art history, never directly associated with a specific style or school of painting. As a result, Whistler's work has in modern times rarely received the attention it deserves. The exhibition "James McNeill Whistler", now ending its run at the National Gallery in Washington, attempts to remedy this inattention by displaying major works spanning his artistic career. "At The Piano", 1858-59 ( 800 x 575 / 48 k / jpeg ) "Wapping", 1860-64 ( 640 x 445 / 64 k / jpeg ) Had Whistler continued with subjects such as "At the Piano", his acceptance into genteel art society would have been assured. "Wapping," however, was soundly rejected by the art establishment. Has it really been that long since I documented an update? I am updating the site, but apparently I'm not noting it here. I just updated Q*Bert with some pictures of a CPO install. I also have pictures of Tempest, and those should go online soon. Updated Q*Bert information. Includes new pictures and a rare (?) or unique marquee. I've finally got the site to a somewhat respectable state. The navigation should be a bit easier. In the next few weeks I hope to have up new pictures for Tempest and Q*Bert. I've picked up another new machine: a Tempest mini. I don't have pictures yet, but I will put them up as soon as I get them. I am almost done restoring the Q*Bert, and I'll have some pictures of that soon as well. I'm also looking at a new pinball, so I'm going to add a pinball section. Also, plan for another site re-design. I need to reorganize the pages to make it easier to navigate. I recently picked up a new machine! It was quite a deal. Look for a new Q*Bert section soon (in a couple of weeks or so).

James Marshall James Marshall was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up sixteen miles outside of the town on the family farm. His father, who worked for the railroad, had his own dance band in the thirties and appeared on the radio. His mother, also musical, sang in the church choir. So it wasn't surprising when Jim considered playing the viola for a career and received a scholarship to attend the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. But during an airplane trip he was jerked out of his seat and injured his hand, and that was the end of his musical career. He returned to San AntonioCollege and later Trinity, where he studied French under Harry Allard, his future collaborator. After moving East, Jim graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a degree in history and French. The French major somehow wound up trying to teach Spanish in a Catholic school in Boston. Before long he was looking for a new profession. On a fateful summer afternoon in 1971 James Marshall lay on his hammock drawing pictures. His mother was inside the house watching Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf on TV. The strident voices of the movie s protagonists George and Martha, split the quiet air, and as the sketches began to take shape, history was made ... and James Marshall never had to look for another profession.

sandlund.net The Comfy Chair Currently Reading /Archive - James, P. D. April 02, 2002 Odds and ends Ok, Easter is over and I'm back at work (sigh). For some reason it has become almost mandatory to read whodunnits at Easter in Norway, so that's what I've been doing. I had a very frustrating time of it, though, as what I like is to be surprised when I get to the end, and this year very few things surprised me. First, I read Kakerlakkene by Jo Nesbø. It's a Norwegian one, and I don't think it's been translated, so those of you who don't read Norwegian will just have to ignore this bit. Nesbø is one of my favourite songwriters, so I thought it was about time I checked out his novels, too. And I'm glad I did, too. Very engaging, and beautifully written. Unfortunately, I sort of guessed major parts of the plot way before thay happened. Pity. Still, I'm certainly going to read the other Holen books as well. Right, then I got on to P.D. James' last novel, Death in Holy Orders . I got rather worried half way through, as the person I thought would be murdered had just been murdered and I thought maybe I knew who'd done it, too. Fortunately, I was proved wrong - I hadn't guessed the murderer, though I'd sort of guessed the motive. All in all, the end made me very happy (for another reason, too - trying to avoid spoilers here), and I can say that, as usual, P.D. James really has to be read. I also watched Evil Under the Sun (Agatha Christie) on television, and got the murderer way too early. Very annoying, but the Poirot mini-series are always so throughly enjoyable because of the setting and the people that it didn't really matter all that much.
