Corrections "The Heartsong of Charging Elk" by James Welch The latest from the Native American novelist probes the culture shock of an Oglala Sioux abandoned in France by Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. By Jonathan Miles One of the central questions of contemporary American Indian literature indeed, perhaps the central question is how to live in the floaty interstice between two cultures: one trampled and impounded, sequestered into arid corners, and the other, that of the tramplers, bigoted and unwelcoming. How to live, as Chickasaw poet Linda Hogan once wrote, with "your hands in the dark of two empty pockets." It's the question N. Scott Momaday probed in his shattering masterwork, "House Made of Dawn," and it's one visited frequently in the work of Sherman Alexie,

    James Garner BRIAN W. FAIRBANKS-WRITER
    FILM Actor Profile:
    JAMES GARNER
One of the greatest dangers an actor faces is overexposure. After all, it’s said that absence makes the heart grow fonder. And don’t forget the old showbiz rule to always leave the audience asking for more. But James Garner has ignored these clichés throughout his lengthy career. He has starred in scores of movies, several TV series, and has also appeared frequently in commercials, often juggling work in all three areas at the same time. Yet, while other stars would burn out with so much exposure, Garner’s star keeps shining brightly. It’s no wonder his most famous role was as a "Maverick." If his career contradicts the clichés, his personal story does not. It’s the usual one of a youth spent in poverty until fame and fortune strike as suddenly as lightning. Born James Bumgarner in 1928, the Oklahoma native’s mother died when he was five years old. After his father’s remarriage, the boy, now eight, went to work to help pay the bills. "God, I worked," he told TV Guide in 1975. "I worked harder than anybody." Garner mowed lawns, mopped floors, worked in the oil fields of Texas, and, after moving to California, laid carpet with his father in the City of Angels. He never wanted to be an actor, but after a stint in Korea (and earning a Purple Heart), an old friend now working as a producer got him into the cast of "The Caine Mutiny Court Martial" on Broadway. In 1955, Garner was signed to Warner Bros. That year, he did a few guest shots on the studio’s popular TV western Cheyenne. Two years later, he was appearing with Marlon Brando in Sayonara, and had a TV western of his own. As the gun shy gambler known as Maverick, Garner became a star, the hottest actor on television, in fact.

    James Shirley
James Shirley was the last of the great Elizabethan dramatists linking the Golden Age with the period of the Restoration. Though at times original in the invention of his plot, which was always ingenious and interesting, his mind was not that of a great master opening up new and untried ways. He was rather a diligent student and painstaking imitator of his great contemporaries and predecessors. He was an honour student in a school of which Shakespeare , Massinger, and Fletcher chiefly were the masters. He owes more to Fletcher perhaps than to any other; but he is often also reminiscent of Shakespeare . A critic said of him that what he borrowed from others lost nothing in his hands. He borrowed characters, situations, and ideas, but the manipulation of them was his own as was also the poetic language which enriched them. He numbered among his friends such men as Massinger, Ford, and Habington; his admiring imitators are found for two centuries after his death. "The Gamester" was frequently adapted by Garrick in 1758 and 1773, and by Poole in "The Wife's Strategem" in 1827. He was quick to observe the follies of his time and his pen was facile in delineating them. He is often reminiscent of Shakespeare , as when he introduces into one of his masques an imitation of the famous comic portion of a Midsummer Night's Dream where the shepherd "Bottle" takes the place of Bottom the Weaver. His tragedy "The Politicians" brings back memories of Hamlet. With the exception of

Russell. Russell was born in Bremerton, Washington in 1931. At age six, he invented a remote-control battleship, with a storage chamber for his lunch. Russell went on to earn a BA in Physics from Reed College in Portland in 1953. Afterward, he went to work as a Physicist in General Electric's nearby labs in Richland, Washington. At GE, Russell initiated many experimental instrumentation projects. He was among the first to use a color TV screen and keyboard as the sole interface between computer and operator; and he designed and built the first electron beam welder. In 1965, when Columbus, Ohio - based Battelle Memorial Institute opened its Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington, Russell joined the effort as Senior Scientist. He already knew what avenue of research he wanted to pursue. Russell was an avid music listener. Like many audiophiles of the time, he was continually frustrated by the wear and tear suffered by his vinyl phonograph records. He was also unsatisfied with their sound quality: his experimental improvements included using a cactus needle as a stylus. Alone at home on a Saturday afternoon, Russell began to sketch out a better music recording system - and was inspired with a truly revolutionary idea.
