    The Honorable Mr. Wilson
    Frog-marching into the history books.
I n 1981, Seyni Kountche, president of Niger, said that his country would "sell uranium even to the devil." He made good on his word, doing business with both Libya and Iraq, and funneling billions in profits into private slush funds to prop up his corrupt regime. A 1993 IAEA report on the Iraqi nuclear program listed 580 tons of natural uranium in Iraq, some of it originating from Niger. Ancient history? Well maybe. (I've certainly written about it before .) But it is useful to remind people, in an age of short-attention spans, that Niger and Iraq were part of a nuclear family dating back to the 1970s. New York Times last July, "current government officials, former government officials, people associated with the country's uranium business. It did not take long to conclude that it was highly doubtful that any such transaction had ever taken place." It is unclear with whom Wilson met. No Nigerien officials have admitted to attending those meetings. El Hadj Habibou Allele, who runs COMINAK, the major uranium-mining concern, stated he was never contacted. For their part, the staff at the Gawaeye thought Wilson was a nice guy, and they nicknamed him "Bill Clinton" after his former employer. New York Times piece, this very narrow finding has been taken as proof that Iraq never even tried to obtain uranium. That was not the question Wilson was sent to Niger to answer, and his investigation certainly never came close to being that thorough. Yet the press reflexively cites this brief visit as the basis for the definitive answer on the entire Niger uranium controversy. Wilson's purported influence has been inflated to the point where otherwise sensible people (and some not-so) are alleging that the inner circles of the White House had to resort to felonious leaking to discredit him.

    Flirting with Fliers
From time to time, invest in an idea that strikes you as wonderful.
T he problem with investing is that, done right, it's not all that much fun. It requires virtues for which you will probably be rewarded in heaven but that won't provide you and your friends with much entertainment on earth: equanimity, restraint, moderation, discipline. On top of that, investing can be painful. You have to slog through the dark, miserable bear markets, enduring anxieties and hardships. And when you emerge into bright bullishness, what's the reward? If you are a conscientious buy-and-hold investor, you have to keep your money at work still, and the worry only increases as stock prices rise and you wait for the next decline. Of course, a brilliant idea does not necessarily make a brilliant business. Could this company make money? It was not hard to find out. The business was absurdly and elegantly simple: one product at one price. This was no General Electric or Cisco Systems. To determine how profitable Netflix would be, you had to make a guess about how many people would sign up for the service. A quick look at the financial statements showed that with a little more than 1 million subscribers, Netflix should break even. At 2 million, it should be making a nice piece of change. Before I bought the stock, however, I wanted to try the product. I purchased a subscription to test the service. It worked as advertised. Within two days of sending back a DVD, I got a new one. The website was easy to navigate, and, like Amazon, it suggested movies based on my previous choices.

EPISTLE TO THE LAODICEANS
From "The Apocryphal New Testament"
M.R. James-Translation and Notes
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1924
Introduction
It exists only in Latin: the oldest copy is in the Fulda MS. written for Victor of Capua in 546. It is mentioned by various writers from the fourth century onwards, notably by Gregory the Great, to whose influence may ultimately be due the frequent occurrence of it in Bibles written in England; for it is commoner in English MSS. than in others. As will be seen, it is wholly uninteresting, and was merely written to justify or explain St. Paul's mention of the letter from Laodicea in Col. iv. 16. 1 Paul, an apostle not of men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ, unto the brethren that are at Laodicea. 2 Grace be unto you and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 I give thanks unto Christ in all my prayers, that ye continue in him and persevere in his works, looking for the promise at the day of judgement. 4 Neither do the vain talkings of some overset you, which creep in, that they may turn you away from the truth of the Gospel which is preached by me. 5 And now shall God cause that they that are of me shall continue ministering unto the increase of the truth of the Gospel and accomplishing goodness, and the work of salvation, even eternal life.

The 'Bowling for Columbine' auteur had every qualification to make his antiwar speech at the Oscars. That didn't make it any less stupid Monday, Mar. 24, 2003
One can hardly say that about Michael Moore. In fact, there is not much reason that anyone cares about Michael Moore except for his political opinions. From "Roger and Me" through his Oscar-winning "Bowling for Columbine", his movie are less documentaries in the usual sense than artfully constructed and often hilariously funny editorials. Agree with him or not, he is, unlike Susan Sarandon, nothing if he is not a professional commentator; and thus it was not inherently stupid for him to make his speech. No. His speech was stupid for entirely different reasons. don't believe that Bush is an illegimate president swept into office by skullduggery? Is he so insulated that he doesn't realize people like that exist? Or are people like that simply not simon-pure enough for him to want them in his antiwar movement?

Artist's biography.
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/tissot/
Tissot, James
Tissot, James (1836-1902). French painter and graphic artist. Early in his career he painted historical costume pieces, but in about 1864 he turned with great success to scenes of contemporary life, usually involving fashionable women. Following his alleged involvement in the turbulent events of the Paris Commune (1871) he took refuge in London, where he lived from 1871 to 1882. He was just as successful there as he had been in Paris and lived in some style in St John's Wood; in 1874 Edmond de Goncourt wrote sarcastically that he had `a studio with a waiting room where, at all times, there is iced champagne at the disposal of visitors, and around the studio, a garden where, all day long, one can see a footman in silk stockings brushing and shining the shrubbery leaves'. His pictures are distinguished most obviously by his love of painting women's costumes: indeed, his workwhich has a fashion-plate elegance and a chocolate-box charm has probably been more often reproduced in works on the history of costume than on the history of painting. He also, however, had a gift for wittily observing nuances of social behavior. In 1882, following the death of his mistress Kathleen Newton (the archetypal Tissot model beautiful but rather vacant), he returned to France. In 1888 he underwent a religious conversion when he went into a church to `catch the atmosphere for a picture', and thereafter he devoted himself to religious subjects. He visited the Holy Land in 1886-87 and in 1889, and his illustrations to the events of the Bible were enormously popular, both in book form and when the original drawings were exhibited.

The British Crick, at 35, still had no Ph.D. The American Watson, 12 years Crick's junior, had graduated from the University of Chicago at 19 and nabbed his doctorate at 22. But they shared a certain wanderlust, an indifference to boundaries. Crick had migrated from physics into chemistry and biology, fascinated by the line "between the living and the nonliving." Watson had studied ornithology, then forsook birds for viruses, and then, doing postdoctoral work in Europe, took another sharp career turn. At a conference in Naples, Watson saw a vague, ghostly image of a DNA molecule rendered by X-ray crystallography. DNA, he had heard, might be the stuff genes are made of. "A potential key to the secret of life was impossible to push out of my mind," he later wrote. Goodbye, Mr. Lavenson, rest in peace. Claire. We shall try to locate relatives who could maybe give us some more insight on the man, james Lavenson.
http://www.easytraining.com/lavenson.htm
Mr. Lavenson, Upon searching for you on the internet, it is with sadness we see that you departed for greener pastures on September 19, 1998. I was so close to speaking with you. You inspired many and your words still span the globe. Tony Eldred of Eldred Training in Australia wrote to me that after having posted your speech on his web site he received a surprise letter from you, thanking him for featuring your speech. He found it amazing that you were web connected, found him out and, instead of us thanking you, you thanking him. I wanted to speak with you and learn from you. I came across the following obituary. Since a British Hospitality Management Lecturer, Kevin Fields, sent me your speech, which I posted on my web site then advertised among the newsgroups and forums I belong to or run, many managers have printed it out and distributed it throughout their company. One said it is chockfull of lessons in customer service, management, people development, and sales; moreover, it is full of humour. Some newsletter quickly mentioned it and made a link to it. From the first words of your speech you captivate people. They stop what they are doing and read it in its entirety. It is so pleasant, so full of wisdom, so full of truth about what goes on in organizations. You drive many points home with your humorous anecdotes - more than any management training program I ever encountered. I hope you do not mind I left the English spelling since it was sent to me by Kevin Fields, who uses it to teach students aspiring to become Hotel Managers how to think creatively - how to think intelligently, how to see the comprehensive picture, how to solve problems, how to value their human resources asset, how to lead, how to improve internal communications, how to establish a personal rapport with customers and guests, how to offer them pleasure and delight while increasing sales and developing the business.
