Born: April 15, 1843, in Greenwich Village, New York, United States Died: February 28, 1916, in London, England Henry James was an extraordinarily prolific writer who produced more than four million words of fiction, an equivalent amount of non-fiction and more than fifteen thousand letters. His writing is challenging to read with its intricate form and complicated language but those who have mastered the complexity consider his work to be thought-provoking and enjoyable. He was born to Henry James Sr., a philosopher and theologian, and Mary Walsh James. Both parents were descendants of wealthy Irish Protestant families in America which allowed them a great degree of financial freedom. James was the second in a family of four children which included William James, a philosopher, scientist and psychologist. James began his formal education at the Richard Pulling Jenks School in New York but his family's love for travel meant that his education took place across much of Europe. He attended school in Geneva, London, Paris, and Bonn, as well as several other cities. Travel was an early and continual influence on James' life and it wasn't until the age of 53 that he established a place of residence for more than a few years. Many of his works contain an echo of homesickness and a curiosity regarding the concept of what constitutes a home.

J ane Campion's film adaptation of The Portrait of a Lady has rekindled public interest in the lapidary, demanding novels of Henry James (1843-1916). This April 15th, on the 154th anniversary of James's birth, we've gathered together writing by and about James that has appeared over the years in The Atlantic Monthly From the time that James's first published short story appeared in The Atlantic "The Story of a Year" , March, 1865), William Dean Howells and subsequent Atlantic editors championed James's literary talents. This support was critical for James, as his difficult fiction demanded more attention of readers than the popular illustrated periodicals of the day were willing to court. Several of James's novels were serialized in The Atlantic including The Portrait of a Lady the first installment of which appeared in November, 1880. After Portrait appeared in book form The Atlantic gave it a glowing review James has continued to fascinate The Atlantic 's readers, writers, and editors. In "Henry James as Landlord" (August 1946), Louise Boit shares letters she received from James while renting Lamb House, his English home in Sussex. The letters show James as the best sort of landlord: full of good cheer and generous with both his household and his friendship. In

There are political leaders and advisors, military men, and scientists, all listed alphabetically. I'll be adding more as time permits. Just click on the names below for a description of the person. Where available, I've listed some of the key books for more information on each person. And remember... this can be like eating peanuts. Henry James

James, Henry (1843-1916)
page: Though closeted, Henry James had a number of intimate relations with young men, and his sexual orientation imbued his fiction. James was born in New York City, on April 15, 1843. He belonged to a prominent American family, whose cultural milieu consisted of the intelligentsia of New England, and whose scholarly and social connections extended throughout Europe. His father, Henry James, Sr., was a noted Swedenborgian philosopher and man of letters, a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Thomas Carlyle. Sponsor Message.
Because Henry Sr. favored frequent changes of scenery, the James children spent their childhood divided between the United States and Europe, and were educated on both continents. The family returned to New England before war broke out between the states, and while helping to extinguish a fire in Newport, Henry Jr. sustained what he later called "an obscure hurt." This injury became the source of much biographical and critical speculation about the cause of the author's lack of sexual interest in women. Henry's eldest brother, William, who went on to become an acclaimed philosopher and psychologist, showed early artistic and academic promise. Henry Jr. attempted to define a space for himself distinct from both his brother and his father. In the early 1860s, Henry began to write short stories and reviews for the

Henry James (1843-1916)
Biographical note
American/British author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, best-known for novels and novellas of morals. As such, he favors internal, psychological drama; his work is frequently about alienation, his prose frequently serpentine. His earlier work is considered Realist, but in fact throughout his long career he maintained a strong interest in a variety of artistic effects and movements. More:

James, Henry
Henry James (1843-1916), known primarily as a major writer of fiction, was the son of Henry James, a somewhat eccentric student of social and religious thought, and the brother of William James, the eminent philosopher and psychologist. In the 1860s James began to submit reviews to the North American Review, edited by James Russell Lowell and Charles Eliot Norton, to the Atlantic, and to the Nation . Even after he began to devote himself to creative writing, he no less steadily produced literary essays and reviews, as well as criticism of art and the theater. James spent a great deal of his mature life in England and on the Continent, and his literary criticism, particularly his book reviewing, reflects his cosmopolitanism: for American magazine editors, James was an expert on English and European fiction; for English editors, he was called on for his expatriate American perspective. In the late 1890s he contributed both "London Notes" to Harper's Weekly and "American Letters" to the British periodical Literature
In 1878 James published his first book of critical essays
