    Interview with Brian Jacques
    published in BookPage
Since January our family has been traveling through Mossflower country with author Brian Jacques. His series, which begins with RedWall (Putnam, $16.95; Avon, 4.99), is the most involving family read we've experienced. The books are so difficult to put down that we read to and from school, on dog walks, and while taking out the garbage. I even talked my reluctant-to-read, ten-year-old son into continuing chapters as I cooked. The characters have moved into our house. We imagine how they might handle situations, banter in "mole speech", guess at possible conclusions and wonder what Brian Jacques will write next. At first look the books appear intimidatingly long, but the chapters are short and it doesn't take but a chapter or two to get hooked on the stories of a valiant brand of mice who fight for freedom against villainous rats, foxes, weasels and stoats. Recently released is Mariel of Redwall , a strong warrior mousemaid who does battle against Gabool, the Wild, a murderous sea rat. (Ages 9 and up, Putnam, $17.95) Our family isn't alone in our admiration of Jacques. Kids across the country flocked to his latest round of signings, hanging on his every word while he recited from his novels. This is particularly astounding for an audience that is notorious for being uninvolved readers. Like the kids, I took advantage Brian Jacques' U.S. tour, to satisfy my curiosity about the man behind the mice.

He shares that knowledge in his latest thrilling adventure, The Angel's Command The second book in his Castaways saga, The Angel's Command The Angel's Command finds the dynamic duo sailing the high seas years later, befriending buccaneers, fighting pirates and narrowly escaping monsters of the deep. But The Angel's Command is not just a high-seas adventure. The second half of the book, and perhaps the most intriguing and thrilling portion of the tale, finds Ben and Ned in the mountains of Spain, where they become entangled with a gypsy girl and a murderous tribe of mountain dwellers. Ben and Ned prove that good always wins out over evil as they traverse the hills and vales of the Pyrenees on a quest to save the kidnapped grandson of a Spanish nobleman. Through imprisonment in a dank dungeon, several avalanches, and a face-to-face meeting with evil, the young boy and his dog prove themselves again and again. Jacques' days as a longshoreman on the quays of Liverpool gave him the inspiration for the

The new Castaways novel comes alive-Redwall fashion-with a magnificent romp on the sea, and another in the robber-filled mountains of Spain! Ben and Ned, the boy and dog who were sent on an angel's errand in Castaways of the Flying Dutchman , find themselves on board a Frenchman's pirate ship, pursued by not one but two ships-an English privateer and a Spanish buccaneer. They finally escape into the Pyrenees, only to stumble into an even more challenging adventure that takes them into very heart of the mountains, where they-and their new companions, a painter and a gypsy girl-must face the most evil robber of them all: the legendary Maguda Razan.

Redwall MUCK - Books by Brian Jacques
    "The Redwall Series"
    a synopsis by Anastasia
Redwall MUCK is based on a series of juvenile fiction books that revolve around a sandstone Abbey and its history. The Abbey and the surrounding Mossflower Woods are inhabited by peaceful animals (like mice, squirrels, otters, hares, and badgers), the woodlanders . However, the evil vermin (mostly rats, ferrets, weasels, and foxes) sometimes threaten the safety of the woodlanders' homes. Books in the Redwall series are, in chronological order:
    • The Legend of Luke
When a young hedgehog named Trimp comes to the Abbey of Redwall, it seems nothing out of the ordinary. But she sings a song that begins to make Martin the Warrior wonder about his past. So he, Dinny, Gonff, and Trimp embark on a quest to the Caves of Martin's tribe, to find what happened to Martin's father - Luke. Martin The Warrior
An evil stoat, Badrang, rules the fortress Marshank. His slaves toil in wretched conditions to build a new stronghold. Among these mistreated prisoners is a young mouse named Martin who, for misbehaving, is to be made an example of. He has been tied between two poles and left for the birds; the vermin take it for granted he will be dead by morning...
