Shirley Jackson
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Shirley Jackson December 14 August 8 ) was an american author who wrote short stories and novels. Her most famous work is her short story "The Lottery", which combines a bucolic small-town-America setting with a horrific shock ending. The tone of most of her works is odd and macabre, with an impending sense of doom, often framed by very ordinary settings and characters. Born in San Francisco California , she graduated from Syracuse University in . While a student there, she met future husband Stanley Edgar Hyman , who was to become a noted literary critic. In addition to her novels , Jackson also wrote a children's novel, Nine Magic Wishes, available in an edition illustrated by her grandson Miles Hyman . She also wrote two humorous memoirs, Raising Demons and Life Among the Savages, about her marriage and the experience of bringing up four children . After her death, her husband released her final unfinished novel, Come Along With Me

inner had been good; Margaret sat with her book on her lap and watched her husband digesting, an operation to which he always gave much time and thought. As she watched he put his cigar down without looking and used his free hand to turn the page of his paper. Margaret found herself thinking with some pride that unlike many men she had heard about, her husband did not fall asleep after a particularly good dinner.
She flipped the pages of her book idly; it was not interesting. She knew that if she asked her husband to take her to a movie, or out for a ride, or to play gin rummy, he would smile at her and agree; he was always willing to do things to please her, still, after ten years of marriage. An odd thought crossed her mind: She would pick up the heavy glass ashtray and smash her husband over the head with it.
"Like to go to a movie?" her husband asked.
"I don't think so, thanks," Margaret said. "Why?"
"You look sort of bored," her husband said.
"Were you watching me?" Margaret asked. "I thought you were reading."
"Just looked at you for a minute." He smiled at her, the smile of a man who is still, after ten years of marriage, very fond of his wife.

Shirley A. Jackson birth: August 5, 1946 place: Washington, D.C. B.S. (1968) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Ph.D. Physics (1973) Massachusetts Institute of Technology President of Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute Jackson was born on August 5, 1946, in Washington, DC. Her parents, Beatrice and George Jackson, strongly valued education and encouraged her in school. Her father spurred on her interest in science by helping her with projects for her science classes. At Roosevelt High School, Jackson attended accelerated programs in both math and science, and she graduated in 1964 as valedictorian. Jackson began classes at MIT that same year, one of fewer than twenty African American students and the only one studying theoretical physics. While a student she did volunteer work at Boston City Hospital and tutored students at the Roxbury YMCA. She earned her bachelors degree in 1968, writing her thesis on solid-state physics, a subject then in the forefront of theoretical physics. Although accepted at Brown, Harvard, and the University of Chicago, Jackson decided to stay at MIT for her doctoral work, because she wanted to encourage more African American students to attend the institution. She worked on elementary particle theory for her Ph.D., which she completed in 1973. Her research was directed by James Young, the first African American tenured full professor in MIT's physics department. Jackson's thesis, "The Study of a Multiperipheral Model with Continued Cross-Channel Unitarity," was subsequently published in the

As historically the vast majority of those in the United States of African descent were black, the term is not typically used to apply to non-black Africans, such as Arabs from northern Africa. Most African Americans are descendants of persons brought to the Americas as slaves between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries. by Joannie M. Schrof The words "first black woman" have been used to describe Shirley Ann Jackson for so long that her name seems incomplete without them. She was the first black woman to earn a Ph.D. from MIT, the first black woman in the country to earn a physics doctorate, and she was both the first African American and the first woman to chair the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Now, she is the first black woman to head any national science and engineering research university, let alone one of the nation's oldest, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The three simple words that today convey such honor upon Jackson at first followed her like a curse. Arriving on MIT's campus with an eager young mind in the fall of 1964, Jackson immediately suffered vicious treatment from those not interested in seeing someone of her race and gender be the first to achieve anything. Ostracized by students who would not even sit next to her in class, Jackson was forced to do all the work in isolation that everyone else did in supportive study groups. One faculty member told her to go "learn a trade." And while simply trying to walk down the street, Jackson was shouted at and spat upon. Once, in downtown Boston, someone even shot at her. Turnaround Artist The suffering Jackson endured would have caused many others to retreat into an angry obscurity, but in a typically thoughtful manner, she made a key decision that has served her well, echoing through the rest of her life. She realized that since she was going to stand out so much, and her actions would be well remembered, she could turn the scrutiny to her advantage and make an indelible impression of excellence. Relying on a strong internal compass from that moment on, Jackson held herself to the highest standards of both intellect and decency, and soon the world took notice. Before long, the same students who had shunned Jackson were seeking her out for help and mentoring, and she obliged.

Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson
"One wants to be recognized in one's own field by other scientists, but I also want to have an impact on young people."
Shirley Jackson, a theoretical physicist, has spent her career researching and teaching about particle physics, using theories and mathematics to predict the existence of subatomic particles and the forces that bind them together. She has so many 'firsts' attached to her name that she seems to naturally break through all boundaries and succeed. When she was a young girl, Shirley's mother, Beatrice would read the biography of Benjamin Banneker to her. Banneker was a free African American scientist and mathematician in the 1700's who helped survey the land, plan the streets, and select building sites of Jackson's hometown, Washington D.C. Her father, George, spurred Jackson's interest in science by helping her with projects for her classes. She chose to attend MIT, and physics opened the world to her. Yet, she felt lonely because she was one of only a few black students. Students treated her differently and some faculty tried to discourage her interest in physics. While in school, she volunteered in the pediatric ward at Boston City Hospital which helped "keep things in perspective.

By Garland L. Thompson Students say that physics is the science that drives engineering. Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, a theoretical physicist with a long string of "first" behind her name, is a driver of engineering development, here and around the world. In her current role as chief executive of the oldest technological university in the U.S., she runs an institution with 4,800 undergraduates and 4,300 graduate students pursuing bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in engineering, science, management, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences. She also is on the board of trustees of her alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As the first African American on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, beginning in the early 1990s, and first to head the agency, Dr. Jackson crisscrossed the nation, reviewing troubled nuclear facilities and unsnarling knotty environmental-safety issues, while also bringing down the temperature of critical debates about community acceptance of nuclear power.

She was one of the first two African-American women in the United States to earn a doctorate in physics.
Jackson had been accepted at another institution for her graduate work, but chose to remain at MIT and encourage the enrollment of more black students there. The number of blacks entering MIT went from two to 57.
She received her B.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1968 and her Ph.D. (Physics) in 1973.
