    July 1999
By Paula Guran [Introductory confession: Several biographical paragraphs from the following essay were originally part of an earlier Jackson essay . But this article has an entirely different focus, so please forgive the self-plagiarism.] I have mixed emotions about seeing Jan de Bont's new version of The Haunting . Robert Wise's 1963 The Haunting is one of my favorite horror movies and I don't see tampering with what is already near-perfection. Not surprisingly, considering my bookish demeanor, I think much of that earlier movie's success lies in the fact it is one of those rare films that stays fairly close to the plot and atmosphere of the extraordinary novel it is based on The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. But whether the new film is good, bad, or otherwise, in our culture any cinematic attention brings public interest to the literature it is based on and that, in this case, is reason enough to rejoice. Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House is worthy of every ounce of notice it receives. Both critically and popularly acclaimed, The Haunting of Hill House is, unquestionably, one of the finest horror novels ever written. You'll find it near the top of every "best of" genre list compiled by readers, academics, critics, and mavens alike. Moreover, few horror writers of the last 40 years have not been influenced either directly or indirectly by

Comment from Claude Poux, Dartmouth College. email communication (February 7, 1997) Her research has focused on Landau theories of charge density waves in one- and two-dimensions. Dr. Jackson's research also touched on two-dimensional Yang-Mills gauge theories and neutrino reactions.
"I am interested in the electronic, optical, magnetic, and transport properties of novel semiconductor systems. Of special interest are the behavior of magnetic polarons in semimagnetic and dilute magnetic semiconductors, and the optical response properties of semiconductor quantum-wells and superlattices. My interests also include quantum dots, mesoscopic systems, and the role of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in correlated 2D electron systems." Professor Shirley Jackson

Dr. Jackson holds a Ph.D. in theoretical elementary particle physics from M.I.T. (1973) and an S.B. in physics from M.I.T. (1968).
In 1995 President William Clinton appointed Dr. Jackson to serve as Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Dr. Jackson was Chairman of the NRC from 1995-1999. As Chairman, she was the principal executive officer of and the official spokesman for the NRC. She had ultimate authority for all NRC functions pertaining to an emergency involving an NRC licensee. The NRC is charged with the protection of the public health and safety, the environment, and the common defense and security by licensing, regulating, and safeguarding the use of reactor byproduct material in the U.S. This includes power reactors; research, test, and training reactors; fuel cycle facilities; reactor byproduct use in medicine, industry and research; the transportation, storage, and disposal of high-level and low-level radioactive waste; and the licensing of nuclear exports for peaceful uses.
While at the NRC, Dr. Jackson initiated a strategic assessment and rebaselining of the agency, leading to a new planning, budgeting, and performance management system that put the NRC on a more businesslike footing in its activities. She also introduced risk-informed, performance-based regulation to the NRC (utilizing probabilistic risk assessment on a consistent basis), which is now being infused throughout its regulatory programs. Elements of the approach also have been incorporated into the regulatory programs of other nations. She led the development of a new reactor oversight program, and created, with the Commission, a license renewal process resulting in the first renewal (in March 2000) of the license of an operating reactor in the United States.

"Dr. Jackson's experience, her perspective, her record of achievement in government, in industry, in science, and in academe provide her with extraordinary qualifications to advance this great university in the 21st century," Samuel F. Heffner Jr. '56, chairman of the board of trustees, said in introducing the new president to the campus.
Jackson was greeted with three standing ovations by a crowd of more than 800 students, faculty, and staff who packed the Darrin Communications Center for the noontime announcement on Dec. 11.
"I hope to bring to Rensselaer a leadership that will be characterized by the development of a shared vision, the clarity of that vision, the skill to articulate it, and the perseverance to bring it to fruition," Jackson said.

    TWENTY GREAT AMERICAN SHORT STORIES
    THE LOTTERY
    BY
    SHIRLEY JACKSON
The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 2th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o'clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play. and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands. Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix the villagers pronounced this name "Dellacroy"eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys. The girls stood aside, talking among themselves, looking over their shoulders at the boys. and the very small children rolled in the dust or clung to the hands of their older brothers or sisters.

    REMINISCENCES ABOUT SHIRLEY JACKSON
by Carol Porter I remember the first time I read Shirley Jackson's The Lottery . During the short story, you never realize what exactly "the lottery" is. Then when you come to the end of it, you get hit with the truth right between the eyes. A thoroughly chilling and unsettling story. Some of Jackson's other stories are like that. The Haunting of Hill House , after The Lottery , is probably her best known. The only regret is that she died too soon. Her power was too short-lived and she could have written so much more. But like in many of the stories she has written, fate is often unkind and downright malicious. A new collection of her stories is out, thanks to the efforts of her children who discovered them unceremoniously in a Vermont barn. What looked like a massive bunch of old papers turned into a gold mine. More of Jackson's works were discovered during correspondences with other members of the family, and visits to the Library of Congress and the San Francisco Library. They had uncovered a total of 130 stories, but chose 54 for the book, Just an Ordinary Day , which just came out in hardback. (I kind of wish they would release all the others, but oh well....)

A devoted Jackson fan created this informal page which features photographs from Judy Oppenheimer's biography of Jackson, as well as biographical and critical links. BIOGRAPHY
Shirley Jackson (1919-1965) was born in San Francisco, California, her mother a housewife and her father an employee of a lithographing company. Most of her early life was spent in Burlingame, California, which she later used as the setting for her first novel, The Road Through the Wall (1948). As a child she was interested in writing; she won a poetry prize at age twelve, and in high school she began keeping a diary to record her writing progress. After high school she briefly attended the University of Rochester but left because of an attack of the mental depression that was to recur periodically in her later years. She recovered her health by living quietly at home and writing, conscientiously turning out a thousand words of prose a day. In 1937 she entered Syracuse University, where she published stories in the student literary magazine. There she met Stanley Edgar Human, who was to become a noted literary critic. They were married in 1940, the year she received her degree. They had four children while both continued active literary careers, settling to raise their family in a large Victorian house in Vermont, where Hyman taught literature at Bennington College.
