My First Experience and a Word of Introduction
I have never added a proper introduction, since I wanted to read more than the two books I have reviewed thus far. It is my surprise then that Jackson's page is counted amongst the most popular author pages on my site; it is also featured as #1 in Google directory as of this writing, though I have never submitted it there. Moreover, the reviews are old, and I would have written at least one of them differently, had I been to do it now. When I find the time and inclination to read another novel by Shirley Jackson, I will expand.

    The Lottery The Lottery
The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green. The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o`clock; in some towns there were so many people that the lottery took two days and had to be started on June 20th. but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten o`clock in the morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner. The children assembled first, of course. School was recently over for the summer, and the feeling of liberty sat uneasily on most of them; they tended to gather together quietly for a while before they broke into boisterous play. and their talk was still of the classroom and the teacher, of books and reprimands. Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix the villagers pronounced this name "Dellacroy"eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys. The girls stood aside, talking among themselves, looking over their shoulders at the boys. and the very small children rolled in the dust or clung to the hands of their older brothers or sisters.

A devoted Jackson fan created this informal page which features photographs from Judy Oppenheimer's biography of Jackson, as well as biographical and critical links. BIOGRAPHY
Shirley Jackson (1919-1965) was born in San Francisco, California, her mother a housewife and her father an employee of a lithographing company. Most of her early life was spent in Burlingame, California, which she later used as the setting for her first novel, The Road Through the Wall (1948). As a child she was interested in writing; she won a poetry prize at age twelve, and in high school she began keeping a diary to record her writing progress. After high school she briefly attended the University of Rochester but left because of an attack of the mental depression that was to recur periodically in her later years. She recovered her health by living quietly at home and writing, conscientiously turning out a thousand words of prose a day. In 1937 she entered Syracuse University, where she published stories in the student literary magazine. There she met Stanley Edgar Human, who was to become a noted literary critic. They were married in 1940, the year she received her degree. They had four children while both continued active literary careers, settling to raise their family in a large Victorian house in Vermont, where Hyman taught literature at Bennington College.

We Have Always Lived in the Castle
    Author Info: Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson is, of course, best remembered for The Lottery (see review ), one of the great short stories of all time, and for The Haunting of Hill House, which has twice been made into a movie. But this terrific novel is every bit as good as those others and may in fact be the best thing she ever wrote. From what I've read, it seems that Ms Jackson's work may well have been an expression of her own psychological problems. If that's true, this story is even more frightening. It is about two sisters, the older one meek and shy, the other assertive and nearly demonic, who barricade themselves inside a gutted mansion to escape the local townsfolk who torment them because they suspect that the girls were involved in the mass killing of four family members. The psychological overtones are plentiful and troubling. There is, first of all, the sense in which it appears that it is only when together that the two sisters form one complete personality. Second, the crime involved is not merely murder, but murder of the family, that ancient taboo. Third, the two are completely alienated from the society around them, even ignoring the few friendly neighbors who come by to try and help. Jackson apparently had a horrendous relationship with her mother and with the people of Bennington, where she lived. Local legend even had it that The Lottery was based on an incident where local boys threw stones at her. Finally there is a strong indication that not only are the girls happier in their isolation, they may truly be better off by themselves and they may be more "normal" than the people in town.
