Issa is a "fridge poetry" set for your Mac. It gives you a bunch of word tiles and lets you assemble poetry using them. A picture being worth a thousand words, here are pictures of two poems:
The marble and cloud backgrounds are supplied by Issa courtesy of the "virtual fridge", the area you compose your poems in. The virtual fridge can display a dozen different background images, courtesy of The3dStudio.com ; you can also supply your own backgrounds, or you can choose to run Issa without the virtual fridge, composing your poems directly over your desktop.
Everything else you see in those snapshots is configurable too: the font, the layout, colors, tile styles, everything. You can make your own word lists with names of people you know or words about hobbies or interests you have (Issa comes with word lists for sports, classic movie stars, celebrities, scientific terms, and other such things). You can export your poems to share with friends (producing HTML pages, images like the ones above, or plain text versions). We could go on and on; configurable snapping, adjustable window level and opacity, image tiles, auto-relayout of poems. But for all this, Issa is very easy to use; it's really just like working with the poetry magnets on your own fridge.
Issa is named after Kobayashi Issa (1763-1827), my favorite poet. I love Issa for many reasons, but his sense of humor is one of the most wonderful things about him. Here's one that makes me laugh every time I read it:

Issa's life was full of misfortunes - he lost his mother at an early age, his stepmother mistreated him, he suffered from poverty, his children died and his marriage with his second wife was unhappy. However, Issa's poems reflected the small joys of life. He used also dialect and colloquial language when depicting the life of the Shinshu peasants and everyday events. Quiet

A peak of cloud.
As a poet Issa was more robust and subjective compared to austere, priestly Matsuo Basho (1644-94) and worldly, sophisticated Yosa Buson (1716-83). By confessing his doubts and loneliness in highly personal haiku , Issa's poems also have given consolation to generations of readers. One of the famous haiku in Oragaharu is said to have been written by Issa when he was a child: Come with me and play

Kobayashi Issa was born in Kashiwabara, Shinano province (now part of Shinano Town, Nagano Prefecture), a son of a farmer. His father was widowed a few years after Issa was born. He remarried but Issa had troubles with his foster mother. He began writing

Trio Mocoto The west African nation of Mali is going through a curious boom time right now. Not only are new roads and buildings sprouting in the capital Bamako, thanks to a flash flood of European funding and infrastructure grants relating to the hosting of the last African Nations football championships, but everyone from Damon Albarn to Jackson Browne seems to have decided that Mali is the place to be and be seen in. Surfing this wave of new found confidence is a generation of Malian musicians who are attempting to write the next few chapters, or maybe even a whole new sequel, not only to Malian music but to African music in general. Issa Bagayogo is a native of southern Mali’s Wassolou region and his music owes a lot to the emblematic instrument of that area, the kamel ngoni, a six stringed version of the kora. The point is that Bagayogo has been busy mixing the ngoni, as well as other traditional Malian instruments like the balaphon and his very own deep silky voice with a defiantly modern electronic approach to beat building and music making. This feverish experimentation has been taking place in the studios of Mali K7 in Bamako, under the inspired technical direction of Frenchman Yves Wernert, one of the unsung heroes of modern Malian music.

Best known by his penname, Issa, his child name was Yataro and registered name was Nobuyuki. He was born in Kashiwabara, now part of Shinano-machi (Shinano Town), Nagano Prefecture. Issa wrote poetry that is especially remarkable considering the life of the poet. His mother died when he was very young, and his father's second wife became a plague upon his soul until he left home at the age of thirteen for Edo (now Tokyo) with his father's help, and lived in poverty for twenty years. His life in Edo is unrecorded until 1787, by which time he was at the Katsushika haiku school. Issa started to write haiku at about the age of 25, having learned it from Genmu and Chiku-a, and had Seibi Natsume as his patron.. Elected to succeed his deceased teacher in 1791, Issa soon resigned and wandered throughout southwest Japan until his father's death in 1801. Although he was named principal heir in his father's will, his stepmother and half brother conspired successfully to keep Issa from the property for thirteen more years. He wrote: My dear old village

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in traditions simply because they have been handed down for generations. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything merely on authority of your teachers and elders. But when, after observation and analysis, you find anything that agrees with reason, and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." -The Buddha's Kalama Sutra
Kokoro Ryu sect of Universal Buddhism: We acknowlegde one God. This God is the Universal Life-force. He has sent many to this earth to help us seek enlightenment, like all the Bodisattvas such as Jesus, the Dali Lama, Mother Theresa and that kind old man down the road. Each appears to us in the form and manner best for our lesson at that time. We all follow the path to the Truth through the teachings of Love and Compassion. We all strive to end suffering. It is the Bottisava St Issa that binds Christianity and Buddhism together in this search.

  • Ancient scrolls reveal that Jesus spent seventeen years in India and Tibet From age thirteen to age twenty-nine, he was both a student and teacher of Buddhist and Hindu holy men The story of his journey from Jerusalem to Benares was recorded by Brahman historians Today they still know him and love him as St. Issa. • In 1894 Nicolas Notovitch published a book called The Unknown Life of Christ . He was a Russian doctor who journeyed extensively throughout Afghanistan, India, and Tibet. Notovitch journeyed through the lovely passes of Bolan, over the Punjab, down into the arid rocky land of Ladak, and into the majestic Vale of Kashmir of the Himalayas. During one of his jouneys he was visiting Leh, the capital of Ladak, near where the buddhist convent Himis is. He had an accident that resulted in his leg being broken. This gave him the unscheduled opportunity to stay awhile at the Himis convent. Notovitch learned, while he was there, that there existed ancient records of the life of Jesus Christ. In the course of his visit at the great convent, he located a Tibetan translation of the legend and carefully noted in his carnet de voyage over two hundred verses from the curious document known as "The Life of St. Issa."
