    WASHINGTON IRVING
IRVING, WASHINGTON a series of tales and sketches of the Moors and Spaniards (2 vols., Philadelphia, 1832). Previous to their appearance he had been appointed secretary to the embassy at London, an office as purely complimentary to his literary ability as the legal degree which he about the same time received from the university of Oxford. 1855-1850. New York and London), undertaken in an enthusiastic spirit, hut which the author found exhausting and his readers tame. His genius required a more poetical theme, and indeed the biographer of Washington must be at least a potential soldier and statesman. Irving just lived to complete this work, dying of heart disease at Sunnyside, on the 28th of November 1859. SIR HENRY IRVING ISAAC

    Irving, Washington
writer, historian, writer of essays united states of america 3 Apr 1783, New York City, New York - 28 Nov 1859, Tarrytown, New York: Sunnyside
Grave location: North Tarrytown, New York: Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
American writer of Scottish descent. He grew up in New York, then a town with only 25,000 inhabitants. In 1809 he published a history of the city titled "A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Dietrich Knickerbocker" in which he satirizes pretentious historians. Irving had also started to study law, but when his beloved Matilda Hoffman died in the same year of tuberculosis, his already delicate health was damaged further and his parents sent him abroad.
He travelled through England, the Netherlands, France and Italy. In 1823 at Dresden, he was infatuated with Emily Foster, the granddaughter of a British count. In 1824 he met Mary shelley in England, but despite the efforts of his friend John Payne he didn't fall for her.
In England (where he spent many years in Birmingham) he met many famous writers. This inspired him to continue his own writing. Sir Walter Scott helped him to publish his "Sketch Book", for which he received 2,000 pounds. The Sketch Book made him famous and he published more sketches in "By Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." (1822)" and "Tales of a Traveller" (1824). Unfortunately the latter work was revceived very badly, causing Irving to stop writing fiction. From then on he wrote mainly history and biography.

Works in the Collection Manuscript Materials Biographies Other Resources Washington Irving , one of the most beloved and influential American writers during the nineteenth century, is remembered today for having written "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." In these stories, as well as in Diedrich Knickerbocker's History of New York , Irving celebrated the folkways of New York's Dutch settlers. Fascinated by European culture, Irving travelled to England in 1815, where he produced The Sketch Book , a collection of sentimental and satiric sketches and stories narrated by Geoffrey Crayon, Gentleman. Following the great success of The Sketch Book , Irving decided to devote himself to authorship and produced a number of histories, travel narratives, and sketches through the rest of his career. Esteemed as an important "literary personage," Irving served as ambassador to Spain. He finally retired to his pastoral retreat Sunnyside in the 1840s, where he received frequent visitations from fellow writers and fans.
