Eugene Ionesco
Eugene Ionesco, the father of "theater of the absurd" (he preferred the label of derision), was born in Slatina, Romania on Nov. 26, 1912. In 1938, at age 26, he settled permanently in Paris when he received a government grant to study in France and write a thesis on "sin and death in French poetry since Baudelaire." Mr. Ionesco was a fervent believer in human rights and a longtime foe of political tyranny. His work conveyed what he viewed as man's struggle to survive in a society that he said formed barriers between human beings. A militant anti-communist, he had long campaigned from exile against the authoritarian regime of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu, who banned his plays. Many of his plays have become staples: The Lesson The Bald Soprano The Chairs Rhinoceros , some of them being played steadily since 1955. Mr. Ionesco's work was often likened to Samuel's Beckett's, but most of his works were funnier than Beckett's, more verbal, richer in farcical action and far less despairing. By 1970 Ionesco had been elected to the pantheon of tradition, the Academie Francaise. His death at 84 was announced by France's Ministry of Culture rather than by his wife of 58 years, Rodica, or their daughter.

Eugene Ionesco

Father of the Theater of the Absurd
Eugene Ionesco is often thought of as the father of the Theater of the Absurd. Ionesco was born November 26, 1912 in Slatina, Romania. His father, Ionesco Ionesco, was Romanian, and his mother, Therese Ipcar, was French. Ionesco spend much of his childhood in Paris with his mother and sister. Meanwhile his father remained in Romania. Ionesco's mother struggled to support her two children. After the end of World War I, Therese, his mother, learned that her husband had secretly divorced her and obtained custody of the children. She was forced to turn the children over to her husband; therefore, the children returned to Romania.
Ionesco's father had complete faith in the government. He fully supported whatever group happened to be in power at any given time. As a result of his support of the government, he obtained a post as an inspector of safety for the Bucharest police. This is also what enabled him to have the divorce from his wife granted. Ionesco disagreed with nearly everything his father supported. One day, after an argument with his father, Ionesco left and never spoke to his father again. Later, when he was talking about his father, Ionesco simply said, "He respected the State, I hated the State." The last words he ever said to his father were "It is better to be on the side of the Jews than to be a stupid idiot. My regards to you, sir." The violent arguments that frequently occurred between Ionesco and his father showed the differences in their political beliefs.

Eugene Ionesco and the Theatre of the Absurd
Life and Times Quotes Book Store Realm of Existentialism Romanian Eugen Ionescu b. Nov. 26, 1909, Slatina, Rom. d. March 28, 1994, Paris, France Romanian-born French dramatist whose one-act "antiplay" La Cantatrice chauve The Bald Soprano ) inspired a revolution in dramatic techniques and helped inaugurate the Theatre of the Absurd . He was elected to the French Academy in 1970. Ionesco was taken to France as an infant but returned to Romania in 1925. After obtaining a degree in French at the University of Bucharest, he worked for a doctorate in Paris (1939), where, after 1945, he made his home. While working as a proofreader, he decided to learn English; the formal, stilted commonplaces of his textbook inspired the masterly catalog of senseless platitudes that constitutes The Bald Soprano. In its most famous scene, two strangerswho are exchanging banalities about how the weather is faring, where they live, and how many children they havestumble upon the astonishing discovery that they are indeed man and wife; it is a brilliant example of Ionesco's recurrent themes of self-estrangement and the difficulty of communication.
