Welcome to UCI's Department of Political Science
The University of California, Irvine, (UCI) ranks among the top research universities in the nation.
The UCI enrollment of 20,000 undergraduates and 3,600 graduate students is large enough to provide an active university environment, while still small enough to preserve a friendly, personal atmosphere. UCI is the ninth campus, having opened in 1965, of the ten campuses of the University of California. The Department of Political Science is a nationally-ranked, top-30 department. In 2001, the Department was ranked 29th by U.S. News and World Report. Its faculty members have achieved distinction in research and professional visibility. Three members of the faculty (David Easton, Bernard Grofman, and Jack Peltason) are fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Other faculty members have served as officers of the major professional associations, including the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, and International Society of Political Psychology. The Department has attained a reputation for producing the very best innovative and interdisciplinary scholarship. Faculty are engaged in the study of such key questions as the politics of advanced and democratizing societies, international cooperation and peace, the politics of racial and ethnic minority groups, and the origins of altruism and morality and their impact on world politics.

Socrates, Ecclesiastical History (VII.15) Of the little that is known about Hypatia, this account by Socrates Scholasticus, which was written about AD 450, is the best and most substantial. He ascribes her death, not to her paganism but to her politics. A different perspective of Hypatia's death is conveyed by John of Nikiu, whose account complements that of Socrates. He blames Hypatia for the prefect's recalcitrance and believes the rumors which were spread that "...she was devoted at all times to magic, astrolabes and instruments of music, and she beguiled many people through Satanic wiles. And the governor of the city [Orestes] honoured her exceedingly; for she had beguiled him through her magic. And he ceased attending church as had been his custom....And he not only did this, but he drew many believers to her, and he himself received the unbelievers at his house." The Chronicle of John, Bishop of Nikiu (LXXXIV.87-88) It was after these events, relates John, that Hypatia was sought out by the mob and killed. Her most adoring pupil was Synesius, a bishop in the church who had died several years earlier. He addresses seven letters to Hypatia and refers to her in several more. Indeed, on his deathbed, he writes to her as "mother, sister, teacher, and withal benefactress, and whatsoever is honoured in name and deed" (Ep.16). She is "my most revered teacher" (Letter to Paeonius) and the one "who legitimately presides over the mysteries of philosophy" (Ep.137). And, in a letter written two years before her own death, he says "I account you as the only good thing that remains inviolate, along with virtue. You always have power, and long may you have it and make a good use of that power" (Ep.81). One can understand that such an influential woman would have occasion to meet with the magistrates of the city, and that such familiarity would be offensive to her enemies.

The Martyrdom of Hypatia (or The Death of the Classical World)
by Mangasar Magurditch Mangasarian
A speech given before the Independent Religious Society at the Majestic Theater in Chicago Our subject this morning takes us to the city of Alexandria, one of the greatest intellectual centers in the days when Athens and Rome still ruled the world. The capital of Egypt received its name from the man who conceived and executed its design Alexander the Great. Under the Ptolemies, a line of Greek kings, Alexandria soon sprang into eminence, and, accumulating culture and wealth, became the most powerful metropolis of the Orient. Serving as the port of Europe, it attracted the lucrative trade of India and Arabia. Its markets were enriched with the gorgeous silks and fabrics from the bazaars of the Orient. Wealth brought leisure, and it, in turn, the arts. It became, in time, the home of a wonderful library and schools of philosophy, representing all the phases and the most delicate shades of thought. At one time it was the general belief that the mantle of Athens had fallen upon the shoulders of Alexandria. But there was a stubborn and superstitious Oriental constituency in the city which would not blend with the foreign element namely, the Greeks and the Romans. This antagonism between the Egyptian born and the children of Hellas and Rome, who were Alexandrians only by adoption, was frequently the occasion of street riots, feuds, massacres, and civil wars.

Online Resources Texts: Hypatia Texts: Hypatia Book Series Used Books: Hypatia ... Are you an Author? Dear Future People by Anne Nolting Dear Future People is a novel which describes the climax of the Hellenic Age in Egypt. Events follow historic accounts of the civil war between Rome and Constantinople, the destruction of the Temple of Serapis, the ethnic cleansing and massacre of Gothic youth, and a trip down the Nile to seek a prophesy for Emperor Theodosius. Hypatia, a woman, was destined to stand at the center of this time of political power struggle. In translation, quotes from the period are woven into the story. Hypatia was born in the later part of the Roman Empire, an era when women were not free to pursue careers. This was a time when orthodox belief effectively wiped out centuries of scientific discovery. Ancient Greek works were torched and scholars were murdered. Hypatia was the last proprietor of the Hellenic Age wonder, the Library of Alexandria. She is portrayed as a young adult facing the issues of a changing world. The reader will discover uncanny parallels to many current situations within the United States and, indeed, the world. Hypatia, a real, historically documented heroine, is a find for today's young adults who are searching for strong, non-fiction role models.

LINKS MISCELLANEOUS Free Updates Masthead NYC Weather A CurtainUp Review Hypatia or The Divine Algebra by Les Gutman For those of you who missed Rinne Groff's math play, The Five Hysterical Girls Theorem , my recent review linked below, Mac Wellman has scheduled something in the nature of a make-up class. It considers Hypatia (Sophia Fox-Long), the 5th Century mathematician, pagan philosopher and inventor considered so inherently dangerous that Christian monks found it necessary to drag her through the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, before dismembering and then burning her body. Wellman's new play follows Hypatia's imaginary trajectory from that spectacle through 8th Century Byzantium and then on to the early 20th Century, when she wanders into Alexandria, Virginia and first lays eyes on a bicycle. With the wide-eyed innocence of a child, she trades her most valuable possession for the bike. And what possession is that? A pot of gold, perhaps? An Egyptian relic? No. It's the number zero (the cipher), the "mark of emptiness."

Hypatia of Alexandria
Compiled from Historical Sources
An image presumed by some to favor Hypatia of Alexandria HYPATIA (370?-415 A.D.), Greek philosopher, born in Alexandria, daughter of the mathematician Theon (q.v.). She assisted her father in his writings, and succeeded him as lecturer on mathematics and Greek philosophy. Her intellectual gifts and her beauty attracted students from foreign countries; and her judgment was so respected that the city magistrates of Alexandria consulted her on important cases. In about 400 A.D. she was the undisputed leader of the Neoplatonic school of philosophy at Alexandria (see NEOPLATONISM). She was the author of commentaries on ancient astronomical and mathematical works. Because of her association with Orestes, the pagan prefect of Alexandria who opposed the persecution of the Jews and other non-Christians initiated by Bishop Cyril (see CYRIL, SAINT), Hypatia was murdered by a mob of Christians and her body was burned. She is the heroine of the historical romance Hypatia (1853) by the English novelist Charles Kingsley.

    Hypatia of Alexandria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Hypatia of Alexandria (c. 370 - ) was a neo-Platonic philosopher and mathematician, who was murdered by a Christian crowd, led by a cleric named Peter, in March, 415 CE. Several works are attributed to her by later sources, including commentaries on Diophantus 's Arithmetica , on Apollonius 's Conics and on Ptolemy 's works, but none have survived. She was the daughter of Theon , the last fellow of the Museum of Alexandria, which was adjacent to or included the main Library of Alexandria . Hypatia did not teach in the Museum, but received her pupils in her own private home. Theophilus , the patriarch of Alexandria, had destroyed some "pagan" temples in the city in , which may have included the Museum and certainly included the Serapeum (a temple and "daughter library" to the Great Library). In 391, Emperor Theodosius had published an edict which prohibited visiting pagan temples, and Christians in the entire Roman Empire had embarked on an intense campaign to destroy pagan places of worship. Hypatia clearly lived during a power struggle between pagans and tolerant Christians on the one side, and dogmatic Christians who demanded the final destruction of paganism on the other. Hypatia herself was a pagan, but was respected by many Christians, and exalted by some (though by no means all) later Christian authors as a symbol of virtue, often portrayed as a life-long virgin. These later accounts should not be seen as strict historical records, though, as they often contradict each other.
