IN PRINT The Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences (IMBS) in the School of Social Sciences is a specialized research center where the objective is to facilitate interaction and common research goals among scientists whose purpose is to formulate precisely and test theories of human behavior; this is to be interpreted in a wide sense as manifested by the membership which spans the following areas: anthropology, cognitive science, economics, engineering, logic and the philosophy of science, mathematics, political science, and sociology. Additional faculty come from management science and psychobiology. To describe our focus, consider the fruitful symbiotic relationship that has existed for millennia between mathematics and the physical sciences. A goal of the IMBS is to generate a similar relationship between mathematics and the behavioral and social sciences. With high-power social scientists (several are members of the National Academy) providing insights about the field and working with the mathematicians who are involved, new mathematical approaches to analyze these issues are being developed and new kinds of mathematical questions are being raised. philosopher, astronomer and mathematician Hypatia's father, Theon of Alexandria, was a teacher of mathematics with the Museum of Alexandria in Egypt. A center of Greek intellectual and cultural life, the Museum included many independent schools and the great library of Alexandria. Hypatia studied with her father, and with many others including Plutarch the Younger. She herself taught at the Neoplatonist school of philosophy. She became the salaried director of this school in 400. She probably wrote on mathematics, astronomy and philosophy, including about the motions of the planets, about number theory and about conic sections. She corresponded with and hosted scholars from others cities. Synesius, Bishop of Ptolemais, was one of her correspondents and he visited her frequently. Hypatia was a popular lecturer, drawing students from many parts of the empire.

Dr. Edward Zeller On Empedocles Empedocles of Agrigentum was born about 495-0 B.C., and died at the age of sixty, about 435-0 B.C. By his impassioned eloquence and practical energy, he, like his father Meton, long maintained himself at the head of the Agrigentine democracy; but he attached still more importance to the functions of religious teacher, prophet, physician, and worker of miracles, which his remarkable personality, resembling that of Pythagoras, enabled him to exercise. Concerning his death many romantic stories, some deifying him, others depreciatory, early came into circulation; the most probable account is that having finally lost the popular favour, he died an exile in the Peloponnesus. Of the writings which bear his name, only the two didactic poems, the fusika and the kaqrmoi , can with certainty be ascribed to him; numerous fragments of both have been preserved. aporroai ) one becoming detached and entering into the pores of the other; where the pores and effluences of two bodies correspond to one another, they attract each other, as in the case of the magnet and iron. THERE was a woman at Alexandria named Hypatia, daughter of the philosopher Theon, who made such attainments in literature and science, as to far surpass all the philosophers of her own time. Having succeeded to the school of Plato and Plotinus, she explained the principles of philosophy to her auditors, many of whom came from a distance to receive her instructions.

Biography of Hypatia
Born in Alexandria, Egypt around A.D. 370, Hypatia is the first woman known to have actively participated in an academic community. She lectured in Alexandria on Plato, Aristotle, and other philosophers, and although none of her work is extant, she reportedly wrote commentaries on Diophantus's Arithmetica , and Apollonius's Conic Sections . She may also have assisted her father, Theon of Alexandria, a scholar at the Museum, in writing a commentary on Ptolemy's Almagest Her association with Greek philosophy and pagan religion, as well as her friendship with Orestes, the Roman prefect of Alexandria, seems to have led to her death in 415. Orestes became embroiled in a power struggle with Cyril, the archbishop of Alexandria. At the height of the conflict, Orestes executed one of Cyril's followers. In retaliation, a mob attacked and brutally killed Hypatia, believing that she had been instrumental in preventing a friendship between Cyril and Orestes. Welcome to UCI's Department of Political Science
The University of California, Irvine, (UCI) ranks among the top research universities in the nation.
The UCI enrollment of 20,000 undergraduates and 3,600 graduate students is large enough to provide an active university environment, while still small enough to preserve a friendly, personal atmosphere. UCI is the ninth campus, having opened in 1965, of the ten campuses of the University of California. The Department of Political Science is a nationally-ranked, top-30 department. In 2001, the Department was ranked 29th by U.S. News and World Report. Its faculty members have achieved distinction in research and professional visibility. Three members of the faculty (David Easton, Bernard Grofman, and Jack Peltason) are fellows of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Other faculty members have served as officers of the major professional associations, including the American Political Science Association, International Studies Association, and International Society of Political Psychology. The Department has attained a reputation for producing the very best innovative and interdisciplinary scholarship. Faculty are engaged in the study of such key questions as the politics of advanced and democratizing societies, international cooperation and peace, the politics of racial and ethnic minority groups, and the origins of altruism and morality and their impact on world politics.

http://www2.sjsu.edu/depts/Museum/hyp.html
Hypatia , the daughter of Theon of Alexandria, was born in about 370 AD. she is the earliest woman scientist whose works have been documented. As a young woman, she traveled to Athens and Italy. Upon her return to Alexandria, she became a philosopher and mathematician. She was appointed to expound the doctrines of Plato and Aristotle and was a noted lecturer on the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, and mechanics. Most of her writings dealt with mathematics, especially algebra. Her most noted work, called Arithmetica, was a commentary on the writings of Diophantus. Hypatia also wrote an explanation of the geometry works of Apollonius of Perga, which was titled, On the Conics of Apollonius. Later in her career she worked with Theon and coauthored a work on Euclid's geometry which is titled Elements. In addition to her mathematical works, Hypatia also developed an apparatus for distilling water, an instrument for measuring the level of water, a plane astrolabe (for measuring the positions of the stars, planets, and sun) and a graduated brass hydrometer for determining the specific gravity of a liquid. Hypatia's philosophical beliefs were in conflict with the views of the Christian rulers of the city of Alexandria. When Cyril, a fanatical Christian, became Partiarch of Alexadria in 412 AD he began a persecution of scholars in the city. In 415 AD Hypatia was arrested, tortured and killed in the church called Caesarium. References Alic, M. (1986).

Hypatia
page 271 The father of Hypatia was Theon, a noted mathematician and astronomer of Alexandria. He would have been regarded as a very great man had he not been cast into the shadow by his daughter. Let male parents beware. At that time, astronomy and astrology were one. Mathematics was useful, not for purposes of civil engineering, but principally in figuring out where a certain soul, born under a given planet, would be at a certain time in the future. No information comes to us about the mother of Hypatia - she was so busy with her housework that her existence is a matter of assumption or a priori reasoning; thus, given a daughter, we assume the existence of a mother. Hypatia was certainly the daughter of her father. He was her tutor, teacher, playmate. All he knew he taught to her, and before she was twenty she had been informed by him of a fact which she had previously guessed - that considerable of his so-called knowledge was conjecture.

Introduction
Historians need to say of the past events they recount not only what happened but also how we know it . This latter question is usually answered by references to sources , that is to say earlier accounts of the matter in hand. We distinguish between two types of source: primary and secondary. The former are those that cannot be traced back any further, the latter those that in their turn do depend on earlier accounts. Primary sources are not necessarily correct in all their detail (indeed those for Hypatia contradict one another in places), but secondary sources should not, without good reason, go beyond what the primary sources assert. Primary sources can however require interpretation and assessment; this is the role of a good secondary source. Indeed secondary sources are vital unless one has the necessary linguistic, historical and cultural background oneself to assess the primary sources. Finally it should be said that works of fiction (whether the fiction is intentional or not!) are not historical sources at all. Regrettably much of what is readily available on Hypatia derives from fictional, rather than historical, sources.
