Or search the encyclopaedia: Huxley, Aldous (Leonard) English writer of novels, essays, and verse. From the disillusionment and satirical eloquence of Crome Yellow Antic Hay (1923), and Point Counter Point (1928), Huxley developed towards the Utopianism (perfect political and social conditions) exemplified by Island (1962). His most popular work, the science fiction novel Brave New World (1932) shows human beings mass-produced in laboratories and rendered incapable of freedom by indoctrination and drugs. Huxley was born in Godalming, Surrey, and educated at Oxford University. He was the grandson of the scientist and humanist Thomas Henry Huxley and brother of the biologist and writer of popular science books Julian Huxley. Aldous Huxley intended to become a doctor, but was hindered by problems with his sight, being blind for a time. Later his eyesight partly recovered and he graduated from Oxford with an English degree in 1915. Huxley joined the staff of the Athenaeum Lawrence The Doors of Perception (1954). His other works include the philosophical novel

Thoughts on Aldous Huxley's Island
[Excerpts reproduced with permission of Laura Huxley.] If you've been to these pages before, skip the little intro, and hop right into the good stuff. The table of links below are the same ones listed at the ends of the following paragraphs.
While Island is a work of fiction, it is the vehicle Huxley used to communicate his ideas about how people in a good society would interact with each other and their environment. These web pages are not offering a literary critique of the novel, analyzing any symbolism, or even summarizing the novel. The plot is a wonderful story in its own right, and it's best to read the book, not a synopsis, to fully enjoy it. The goal here is to simply present Huxley's underlying ideas and philosophies upon which the novel is built. Just as many science-oriented movies start off with a child being taught something, or a news program, or some other educational device which is really for the benefit of the viewer, Huxley has his own "news reel" in Island (Note: Quotes are referenced by page number in the book I read. Since your edition might be a different size, I've also divided the page number by the total number in the book to get a fraction. That way, you can just multiply the fraction by however many pages are in your book to find the text.)

Aldous Huxley was born on 26th July 1894 near Godalming, Surrey. He began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties, but it was his first novel, ‘Crome Yellow’ (1921), which established his literary reputation. This was swiftly followed by ‘Antic Hay’ (1923), ‘Those Barren Leaves’ (1925) and ‘Point Counter Point’ (1928) – bright, brilliant satires in which Huxley wittily but ruthlessly passed judgement on the shortcomings of contemporary society. For most of the 1920s Huxley lived in Italy and an account of his experiences there can be found in ‘Along The Road’ (1925). In the years leading up to the Second World War, Huxley’s work took on a more sombre tone in response to the confusion of a society which he felt to be spinning dangerously out of control. The great novels of ideas, including his most famous work ‘Brave New World’ (published in 1932 this warned against the dehumanising aspects of scientific and material ‘progress’) and the pacifist novel ‘Eyeless in Gaza’ (1936) were accompanied by a series of wise and brilliant essays, collected in volume form under titles such as ‘Music at Night’ (1931) and ‘Enda and Means’ (1937). In 1937, at the height of his fame, Huxley left Europe to live in California, working for a time as a screenwriter in Hollywood. As the West braced itself for war, Huxley came increasingly to believe that the key to solving the world’s problems lay in changing the individual through mystical enlightenment. The exploration of the inner life through mysticism and hallucinogenic drugs was to dominate his work for the rest of his life. His beliefs found expression in both fiction (‘Time Must Have a Stop’, 1944 and ‘Island’, 1962) and non-fiction (‘The Perennial Philosophy’, 1945, ‘Grey Eminence’, 1941 and the famous account of his first mescalin experience, ‘The Doors of Perception’, 1954.

    Ideais Insanos
A História é suficiente.

M The Blank Slate Forbes ASAP ) are uncomfortably aware of the relentlessness with which researchers have been shrinking the size of that core, but we live in faith that they will never succeed in eliminating it altogether. Professor Pinker, who is very up to date indeed in these matters, plainly does not share that faith, hence his utter neglect of matters metaphysical. Living as we do in such an un-metaphysical age, we are in a poor frame of mind to approach the writer who said the following thing, and who took it as a premise for his work through most of a long literary career. It is impossible to live without a metaphysic. The choice that is given us is not between some kind of metaphysic and no metaphysic; it is always between a good metaphysic and a bad metaphysic. Eyeless in Gaza Here, in a uniform edition, are not only the essays Huxley published in book form, with his two travel books included for good measure, but also scores of magazine and newspaper pieces previously accessible to the general reader only with difficulty. Title notwithstanding, the Complete Essays Athenaeum or the London Mercury A Brave New World , published in 1932. The following things, at least, can be said with certainty: Aldous Huxley was raised in a family that took intellectual inquiry very seriously indeed, he maintained a lifelong interest in science, and he treated the religious instinct with utmost respect.

    Acting and Actors
A bused as we abuse it at present, dramatic art is in no sense cathartic; it is merely a form of emotional masturbation. It is the rarest thing to find a player who has not had his character affected for the worse by the practice of his profession. Nobody can make a habit of self-exhibition, nobody can exploit his personality for the sake of exercising a kind of hypnotic power over others, and remain untouched by the process.
    Beauty
B eauty for some provides escape, who gain a happiness in eyeing the gorgeous buttocks of the ape or Autumn sunsets exquisitely dying.
    Brotherhood
T he brotherhood of men does not imply their equality. Families have their fools and their men of genius, their black sheep and their saints, their worldly successes and their worldly failures. A man should treat his brothers lovingly and with justice, according to the deserts of each. But the deserts of every brother are not the same.
    Death and Dying
I gnore death up to the last moment; then, when it can't be ignored any longer, have yourself squirted full of morphia and shuffle off in a coma. Thoroughly sensible, humane and scientific, eh?
