Besides novels he published travel books, histories, poems, plays, and essays on philosophy, arts, sociology, religion and morals. Among Huxley's best known novels is BRAVE NEW WORLD, which is one of the classical works of science fiction along with George Orwell 's Nineteen-Eighty-Four . The word "utopia" comes from Thomas More's novel Utopia . In his later years Huxley wrote two books about mind-altering drugs. "Half of the human race lives in manifest obedience to the lunar rhythm; and there is evidence to show that the psychological and therefore the spiritual life, not only of women, but of men too, mysteriously ebbs and flows with the changes of the moon. There are unreasoned joys, inexplicable miseries, laughters and remorses without a cause. Their sudden and fantastic alternations constitute the ordinary weather of our minds. These moods, of which the more gravely numinous may be hypostasized as gods, the lighter, if we will, as hobgoblins and fairies, are the children of the blood and humours. But the blood and humours obey, among many other masters, the changing moon. Touching the soul directly through the eyes and, indirectly, along the dark channels of the blood, the moon is doubly a divinity."

Aldous Huxley "But I like the inconveniences." "We don't," said the Controller. "We prefer to do things comfortably." "But I don't want comfort. I want God, I want poetry, I want real danger, I want freedom, I want goodness. I want sin." "In fact," said Mustapha Mond, "you're claiming the right to be unhappy." "All right then," said the Savage defiantly, "I'm claiming the right to be unhappy." "Not to mention the right to grow old and ugly and impotent; the right to have syphillis and cancer; the right to have too little to eat; the right to be lousy; the right to live in constant apprehension of what may happen tomorrow; the right to catch typhoid; the right to be tortured by unspeakable pains of every kind." There was a long silence. "I claim them all," said the Savage at last. Mustapha Mond shrugged his shoulders. "You're welcome," he said. from Brave New World

He then turned to literature, publishing two volumes of poetry while still a student at Oxford. His reputation was firmly established by his first novel, Crome Yellow (1921), a witty satire on the intellectual pretensions of his time.

Aldous (Leonard) Huxley
Author
Aldous Huxley was here for an endowed chair when this was taken. The powers that be on campus were very worried about his health, because he just wasn't eating. His beautiful hands are just skin and bones, and his clothes could hold another person. He had slipped into an intellectual trance and was fading away. He wasn't even bothering with his laundry. So the University paid a student to live with him and take care of him. I was ecstatic about having the opportunity to do his portrait. During the sitting he began talking about a book he had just finished, the 180 degrees counterpart of Brave New World . We spent a wonderful afternoon talking about what an utopian culture would really be like, and he said that the only thing he had left to do was to choose a title for the book. The tragedy is that his house in Westwood later burned, and the only copies of his completed manuscript were destroyed. He had to be physically restrained from trying to rescue them. GPB

    Huxley, Aldous Brave New World
Genre Novel (267 pp.) Keywords Freedom Genetic Engineering Human Worth Individuality ... Technology Summary In the "brave new world" of 632 A. F. (After Ford), universal human happiness has been achieved. (Well, almost.) Control of reproduction, genetic engineering, conditioningespecially via repetitive messages delivered during sleepand a perfect pleasure drug called "Soma" are the cornerstones of the new society. Reproduction has been removed from the womb and placed on the conveyor belt, where reproductive workers tinker with the embryos to produce various grades of human beings, ranging from the super-intelligent Alpha Pluses down to the dwarfed semi-moron Epsilons. Each class is conditioned to love its type of work and its place in society; for example, Epsilons are supremely happy running elevators. Outside of their work, people spend their lives in constant pleasure. This involves consuming (continually buying new things, whether they need them or not), participating in elaborate sports, and free-floating sex. While uninhibited sex is universal and considered socially constructive, love, marriage, and parenthood are viewed as obscene.

Huxley. Educated at Eton, Aldous Huxley was forced to leave the school at the age of seventeen due to an affliction of the eyes. He was left partially blind for two or three years and therefore was unable to complete the rigorous scientific training he had undertaken. When his eyesight improved, Huxley went to Oxford where he received a degree in English literature. Huxley's career started in journalism and included music and artistic criticism as well as book reviews. He also began writing poems, essays, and historical pieces. However, his satirical novels were better received by the public than his other writings. His first book was a volume of poetry called The Burning Wheel . While working as an editor for House and Garden during the1920's, Huxley wrote many novels including

    20. Aldous Huxley : Brave New World
Analysis of the book and a breakdown of its social themes in defense of paradiseengineering.

    BRAVE NEW WORLD ?
    A Defence Of Paradise-Engineering
Brave New World (1932) is one of the most bewitching and insidious works of literature ever written. An exaggeration? Tragically, no. Brave New World has come to serve as the false symbol for any regime of universal happiness For sure, Huxley was writing a satirical piece of fiction, not scientific prophecy. Hence to treat his masterpiece as ill-conceived futurology rather than a work of great literature might seem to miss the point. Yet the knee-jerk response of "It's Brave New World!" to any blueprint for chemically-driven happiness has delayed research into paradise-engineering for all sentient life. So how does Huxley turn a future where we're all notionally happy into the archetypal dys topia? If it's technically feasible, what's wrong with using biotechnology to get rid of mental pain altogether? Brave New World is an unsettling, loveless and even sinister place. This is because Huxley endows his "ideal" society with features calculated to alienate his audience. Typically, reading BNW elicits the very same disturbing feelings in the reader which the society it depicts has notionally vanquished - not a sense of joyful anticipation. Thus BNW doesn't , and isn't intended by its author to, evoke just how wonderful our lives could be if the human genome were intelligently rewritten. In the era of
