Index Born in the small town of Eatonville, Florida, Zora Neale Hurston is known as one of the lights of the Harlem Renaissance. She first came to New York City at the age of 16 having arrived as part of a traveling theatrical troupe. A strikingly gifted storyteller who captivated her listeners, she attended Barnard College, where she studied with anthropologist Franz Boaz and came to grasp ethnicity from a scientific perspective. Boaz urged her to collect folklore from her native Florida environment, which she did. The distinguished folklorist Alan Lomax called her Mules and Men (1935) "the most engaging, genuine, and skillfully written book in the field of folklore." Hurston also spent time in Haiti, studying voodoo and collecting Caribbean folklore that was anthologized in Tell My Horse (1938). Her natural command of colloquial English puts her in the great tradition of

Junior Pro-Seminar Prof. Roxanne Mountford

Course Description
Required Materials Course Requirements Assignments ... Return to Homepage Course Description In this junior pro-seminar for English majors, you will read, research, and write about the dynamic, enigmatic work of Zora Neale Hurston, one of the most important American writers of the early twentieth century. A member of the Harlem Renaissance, Hurston was trained as an anthropologist, collected folklore in Florida and the Caribbean, and wrote novels, plays, and short stories alongside her scholarly books and articles on the folktales and songs of New World Africans. Despite success during her lifetime, she died in obscurity. Hurston's work was recuperated in the 1970s after Alice Walker stumbled upon one of her novels. The revival of Hurston's work is still unfolding. There is a national conference on Hurston each year, a play about her life, and most recently, the discovery of several unpublished dramas in the Library of Congress rare manuscript collection. We will read one this semesterfrom Hurston's own typewritten manuscript. In addition to the unpublished play, you will read several of Hurston's primary works, including her famous novel

Feminista 100 Greatest Works of 20th Century Fiction by Women Writers
Author Info: Zora Neale Hurston
Even had she never written a word, Alice Walker would have secured her place as an important figure in the history of African American fiction simply by rehabilitating Zora Neale Hurston. In her own day, Hurston was recognized as a leading figure of the Harlem Renaissance, doing ground breaking work on black folklore, collaborating with Langston Hughes and writing an autobiography, several novels and many short stories. But she had the great misfortune to fall afoul of her fellow black intellectuals, like Richard Wright and Ralph Ellison, who took offense at her use of vernacular language in her stories and who thought that her writing was not sufficiently negative about the black experience in America. Her opponents were better connected politically and saw to it that she was dismissed by the Left intelligentsia. She died in obscurity in a Welfare home and her works went out of print, largely forgotten. Then, in 1975, Alice Walker wrote a piece for Ms Magazine , about her search for Hurston's grave and began a reawakening of interest in her work. Walker's attentions seem to have been amply repaid, as this fine novel seems to have been a significant influence on her own book

Manuscript Group 6
After Zora Neale Hurston died on January 28, 1960 in a Fort Pierce, Florida, hospital, her papers were ordered to be burned. A law officer and friend, Patrick DuVal, passing by the house where she had lived, stopped and put out the fire, thus saving an invaluable collection of literary documents for posterity. The nucleus of this collection was given to the University of Florida libraries in 1961 by Mrs. Marjorie Silver, friend and neighbor of Zora Neale Hurston. Other materials were donated in 1970 and 1971 by Frances Grover, daughter of E. O. Grover, a Rollins College professor and long-time friend of Hurston's. In 1979 Stetson Kennedy of Jacksonville, who knew Hurston through his work with the Federal Writers Project, added additional papers. The Zora Neale Hurston literary estate is represented by
