The Writers’ Union of Canada is pleased to announce its
2000 POSTCARD STORY COMPETITION
$500 PRIZE WINNER
Postcard story writing – a unique blend of prose and verse – is a new and intriguing genre that reflects our culture’s move to short, dramatic images and ideas. The Writers' Union of Canada initiated its Postcard Story Competition in 1999 to discover, encourage, and promote writers of fiction and non-fiction in this form. The challenge of postcard stories is to deliver something lasting for the reader within the strict economy of its language. Entries were original and unpublished, with a 250 word maximum. This year, 20 Union members donated their time and expertise to read over 800 submissions, distilling them to a shortlist of twelve strong entries. Sally Ito Dave Margoshes and Susan Swan , who comprised the final jury, had this to say about the entries in general: "There was a wide range of styles and approaches among the finalists, indicating the debate over what exactly constitutes a "postcard story" is still alive. In effect, this is a form that is still – and perhaps always will be – inventing itself." The jury chose the following winner from the shortlist of 12 contenders: WINNER
($500 cash award) "One Chance" by Deborah Villeneuve "The author’s concealment of the contents of the note at the end allows this story to rise above the otherwise conventional circumstances of its plot. By focussing instead on the reactions to the note, the story becomes art." Deborah Villeneuve has been writing for 20 years, and is an active member of a writer’s workshop at the University of Toronto. She has worked both as a teacher and medical secretary and currently lives in Toronto.
