Bernice T. Hunter Bernice Hunter Thurman was born in Toronto in 1922. She has been interested in writing since childhood. In her teens she met her idol, L. M. Montgomery (author of Anne of Green Gables ). The famous author complimented her good imagination and true-to-life characters however, she also advised her that a writer must have a university education. Unfortunately, Bernice came from a very poor family and had no chance to go to university. Even so, while raising her children she continued to write, often making her children heroes in her stories. Much later, after they were grown up, Bernice sent a story to a newspaper – her first published work! From there she went on to publish numerous stories for children in magazines and anthologies. Her novels, especially the Booky trilogy, are autobiographical in mature and give an interesting historical look at earlier times in Ontario. Author's reflections on the book: I was always fascinated with my cousin Amy's story and I was grateful to her when she gave me permission to write it. Since the publication of Amy's Promise I have been deluged by letters full of questions about Amy's family, including, what happened to baby Janey? Janey was just a tiny baby when her mother died, so her Aunt Bessie, her mother's older sister, and Bessie's husband, Uncle Wallace, took her home to live with them in Winnipeg. At the end of

Review by Jennifer Sullivan. excerpt:
Feb. 18, 1926
Dear Mama, today I am very sad because it is six years since you went away. I wish I had a sister to talk to. Oh, Mama, why did you have to die? And why did Daddy let Aunt Bessie take our baby? Didn't he love her anymore? Maybe he doesn't love any of us.
What do kids today have in common with those of sixty years ago? Plenty, according to award-winning writer Bernice Thurman Hunter, whose latest novel, Amy's Promise, is set in the 1920s. The author of the much-loved ``Booky" trilogy again treats us to a delightful and nostalgic glimpse at growing up which also manages to explore some serious and contemporary issues.
When her mother dies at an early age, young Amy Phair promises to look after the little ones. Along with her stern Gramma Davis, Amy must take care of the household chores and raise her boisterous younger brothers. To make matters worse, Amy's baby sister has been sent to live with Aunt Bessie in Edmonton, and her father is an alcoholic who constantly quarrels with Gramma. And why is Amy left with all the chores while her younger brothers are allowed to play? Amy is filled with indignation when Gramma Davis tells her that a boy can t be seen pegging out the washing. She envies the idyllic life of her best friend Winnie Plum, who lives in a pretty house, doesn't do a lick of work, and has two parents who love her.

Poverty is one hardship that has been constant in children's literature. "The Little Match Girl", At the Back of the North Wind, Five Little Peppers and How They Grew these stories all demonstrate a child's innate toughness in harsh circumstances.
If an author has experienced extreme poverty herself and grows up to write about it, her narrative has a particularly strong ring. Our most vivid portrayer of growing up poor in Canada is Bernice Thurman Hunter.
Her three books based on her own family That Scatterbrain Booky, With Love from Booky, and As Ever, Booky were first published in the early and mid-'80s. It's a treat to now have them reissued in one volume.
Dad sat as still as a statue. His face was the colour of dry cement. Long before he exploded, my legs had begun to shake.
His anger burst out in a torrent of rage and the swear words he used were something wicked. Mum just hurled them back in his face. Dreadful, hateful, evil words flew back and forth across the room like lightning bolts in a thunderstorm.
I don't know what she said to make him hit her. All I remember was the terrible sound, like a clap of thunder. A piercing scream pealed from her throat, scaring the wits out of us kids.
