LEIGH HUNT LEFT PRISON by John Keats WRITTEN ON THE DAY THAT MR. LEIGH HUNT LEFT PRISON - What though, for showing truth to flatter'd state, Kind Hunt was shut in prison, yet has he, In his immortal spirit, been as free As the sky-searching lark, and as elate. Minion of grandeur! think you he did wait? Think you he naught but prison walls did see, Till, so unwilling, thou unturn'dst the key? Ah, no! far happier, nobler was his fate! In Spenser's halls he stray'd, and bowers fair, Culling enchanted flowers; and he flew With daring Milton through the fields of air: To regions of his own his genius true Took happy flights. Who shall his fame impair

Leigh Hunt: Life, Poetics, Politics
Edited by Nicholas Roe
Routledge 2003
Summary
The life of the poet, critic and journalist Leigh Hunt spanned the Romantic and Victorian eras. His influence in both periods was far-reaching Hunt encouraged poets such as Keats, Shelley, Tennyson and D. G. Rossetti; his reviews of the London stage opened the way for the theatrical criticism of Coleridge, Hazlitt and Lamb; his editorship of the Examiner (1808-22) was a high point in English journalism; his campaigning on liberal issues (which brought him a prison sentence) marks him out as one of the great reformers of the age. His poetry initiated a playful counter-Romanticism; his Autobiography (1850) is the first modern example of the genre. This timely collection of essays by scholars and critics of international standing explores Hunt's controversial life, writings and politics over the full length of his career, enabling readers to appreciate the brilliance and variety of his achievements. Contents include:
  • Introduction: Leigh Hunt's track of radiance Nicholas Roe
  • Leigh Hunt: some early matters Nicholas Roe
  • Leigh Hunt and Charles Cowden Clarke, 1812-18 John Barnard
  • 87. The Newgate Calendar - JOHN AND LEIGH HUNT

JOHN AND LEIGH HUNT Imprisoned for a Libel on His Royal Highness the Prince Regent As the following trial is so recent, and must be still in the memory of our readers, who have most probably formed their own opinions respecting it, we shall forbear to make any comments; and which our limits will not allow us to give at length. John and Leigh Hunt, one the editor, and the other the printer, of a newspaper called the Examiner, having been convicted of a libel on the above-mentioned illustrious personage, were brought up to receive the judgment of the court, on Wednesday, the 3rd of February; and, as soon as the judges, lord Ellenborough, Mr Justice Le Blanc, and Mr Justice Bailey, had taken their seats upon the bench. The solicitor-general, Sir W. Garrow, moved for the judgment of the court upon the two defendants convicted of having printed and published a libel upon the prince regent, in the Examiner, Sunday newspaper. John and Leigh Hunt were accordingly called, and appearing, took their places upon the floor of the court. The chief justice then read the notes he had taken upon the trial, and read the libel as set forth in the information. No affidavits having been produced on behalf of the prosecution, the solicitor-general observed, that by the rules of the court the defendants' counsel was first to address their lordships.

he Dramatic Works of WYCHERLEY, CONGREVE, VANBRUGH, and FARQUHAR, with Biographical and Critical Notices. By LEIGH HUNT. 8vo. London: 1840. WE have a kindness for Mr. Leigh Hunt. We form our judgment of him, indeed, only from events of universal notoriety, from his own works, and from the works of other writers, who have generally abused him in the most rancorous manner. But, unless we are greatly mistaken, he is a very clever, a very honest, and a very good-natured man. We can clearly discern, together with many merits, many faults both in his writings and in his conduct. But we really think that there is hardly a man living whose merits have been so grudgingly allowed, and whose faults have been so cruelly expiated. In some respects Mr. Leigh Hunt is excellently qualified for the task which he has now undertaken. His style, in spite of its mannerism, nay, partly by reason of its mannerism, is well-suited for light, garrulous, desultory ana, half critical, half biographical. We do not always agree with his literary judgments; but we find in him what is very rare in our time, the power of justly appreciating and heartily enjoying good things of very different kinds. He can adore Shakspeare and Spenser without denying poetical genius to the author of Alexander's Feast, or fine observation, rich fancy and exquisite humour to him who imagined Will Honeycomb and Sir Roger de Coverley. He has paid particular attention to the history of the English drama, from the age of Elizabeth down to our own time, and has every right to be heard with respect on that subject.
