From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Victor Hugo Victor Hugo February 26 May 22 ) was a French author, the most important of the Romantic authors in the French language Born in Besançon Doubs in the region of Franche-Comté . One of the most powerful and popular authors of 19th century France , and a champion of republicanism exiled during the reign of Napoleon III and returned in Major works include novels and a large body of poetry . His death, and the spontaneous national mourning which followed, inspired the French government to reinvent The Panthéon in Paris as a temple in homage to the great men (and, eventually, women) of France. He is buried in its necropolis. Although Hugo is better known to the English-speaking world as a novelist , it was as a poet that he broke new ground. The French poetic traditions were as well-established in his time as the English ones were before the time of the Romantic poets , and Hugo's contribution may be compared with that of Wordsworth . He believed that the poet's purpose should be two-fold:
  • to echo universal sentiment by revealing his own feelings, uniting the voices of mankind, nature and history.

About the Author
Novelist, poet, and dramatist, the most important of French Romantic writers. In his preface to his historical play Cromwell (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature. Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and "How came it that this prudent, economical man was also generous? That this chaste adolescent, this model father, grew to be, in his last years, an ageing faun? That this legitimist changed, first into a Bonapartist, only, later still, to be hailed as the grandfather of the Republic? That this pacifist could sing, better than anybody, of the glories of the flags of Wagram? That this bourgeois in the eyes of other bourgeois came to assume the stature of a rebel? These are the questions that every biographer of Victor Hugo must answer." (from Olympio: The Life of Victor Hugo (1822). It gained him a royal pension from Louis XVIII. As a novelist Hugo made his debut with

Victor Hugo
The revolution of 1848 marked a watershed in the social and political opinions and ultimately in the course of the great writer's literary career. However, for Victor Hugo the course that would lead him from the right to the left in the Chamber of Deputies, unfolded gradually over the first two years of the upheaval. Even after the fall of the citizen king Louis Philippe, this former member of the upper house under the Restoration, favored the regency of the Duchess d'Orleans. His famous portrait of Blanqui at the clubs perfectly encapsulates the bourgeois iconography of fear for the revolutionary wild man. The carnage of the June Days merely shifted his sentiments from Cavaignac to Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. But Louis Napoleon was on his way to becoming "little" ( le Petit History of a Crime . By the time the great romantic had begun his exile he had turned one hundred and eighty degrees, from an adherent of the restored monarchy to a champion of a democratic and social republic. Written in exile

This show marked the end of an era at Cosgrove Hall. It was the last cel-animated production before the big Thames collapse and company revamp, and the final project to feature the voices of CH stalwart Brian Trueman and cuddly TV munchkin David Jason. It also featured many guest appearances from other Cosgrove Hall characters, a common practise in comics, but an unusual step for a cartoon. I could speculate that the makers thought the show couldn't stand on its own and needed these popular, established characters to attract viewers... but heck, what do I know. So, was it actually any good? Well basically, most people either really loved it or really hated it. I can't deny it suffered from uninspired writing in places, and was a step down from its predecessor Count Duckula in terms of style. But it did have eye-pleasing character designs, great animation (most of the time), and taught viewers how to call someone a rotter in French. Who says cartoons aren't educational? Oh, and it seems to be wildly popular in Australia (insert your own Australians/criminals joke here.) Unfortunately
