English poet, dramatist, critic, and short story writer, married to the American poet Sylvia Plath, who committed suicide in 1963. Hughes stated that poems, like animals, are each one 'an assembly of living parts, moved by a single spirit.' In his early works Hughes questioned man's function in the universal scheme. Seriously interested in shamanism, hermeticism, astrology, and the Ouija board, Hughes examined in several of his later animal poems the themes of survival and the mystery and destructiveness of the cosmos.

Ted Hughes (1930-1998)
Edward J. Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd in the West Riding of Yorkshire on 16 August 1930. He studied archaeology and anthropology at Pembroke College, Cambridge, fields which would later inform the themes of much of his verse. While at university he met (Sylvia Plath) , whom he was married in 1956 and separated from in 1962.
He was appointed Poet Laureate in 1984. In his later years he published translations of (Ovid) , and his children's book The Iron Giant was made into a major animated motion picture. His last published collection of verse was Birthday Letters (1998), in which he detailed and perhaps strove, finally, to exorcise certain aspects of his relationship with (Plath)

The British Library is one of the best resources in the world for studying the work of the English poet and children's writer Ted Hughes (1930-1998). Within Modern British Collections these include first and later editions of his poetry and prose, as well as critical studies, biographies, and literary journals in which his work is discussed. The Library also holds manuscripts and sound recordings by or about Hughes.
The Library's printed collection is especially strong in fine press work, a medium Hughes found attractive. English presses featuring Hughes include the Rainbow Press and the Morrigu Press, but perhaps the most significant are the American editions produced by the Gehenna Press. For the Gehenna, Hughes worked in close collaboration with the artist and printer Leonard Baskin, and their friendship and artistic association spanned decades. (1998; shelfmark: Cup.512.b.150) is a particularly important example of a Gehenna book: this limited edition contains poems held back from the autobiographical Birthday letters (Faber, 1998; shelfmark: YK.1998.a.682) and not republished until after his death, when they were included in

I am inhabited by a cry. Nightly it flaps out
Looking, with its hooks, for something to love.
    Sylvia Plath, 'Ariel'
If a man's wife commits suicide he attracts and, in most cases deserves, sympathy and support; for his next partner to go on to do the same thing (and take the life of their child at the same time), only six years later, inevitably leads to suspicions about his character and deserves investigation.
Unfortunately, by virtue of being both a man and a talented writer, Ted Hughes' indiscretions and contributions towards the suicides of Sylvia Plath and Assia Welville have been largely confined to the feminist lobby and, as a result, been given short shrift. As one writer put it: "He was a great man and nothing was said or done to disturb the aura around him." When Ted Hughes used to give readings he would often be confronted by demonstrators holding placards which accused him of murdering Sylvia Plath. Plath's grave in Yorkshire has repeatedly been desecrated with the letters ‘Hughes’ hacked off her name on the headstone. The recent revelations about her husband’s philanderous behaviour and lack of faithfulness to any of his wives are sure to incite haters of Hughes even further. A new book has been published which exposes yet more womanising by Hughes, names another mistress of his, and suggests he fathered a fourth, unacknowledged child.

Now is the globe shrunk tight
Round the mouse's dulled wintering heart
Weasel and crow, as if moulded in brass,
    Move through an outer darkness
    Not in their right minds,
With the other deaths. She, too, pursues her ends,
Brutal as the stars of this month,
Her pale head heavy as metal.
Edward J. Hughes was born in Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, but raised in Mexborough, a coal-mining town in South Yorkshire. The harsh landscape of the northern England moors had a strong influence in Hughes's poetry. His parents were warm-hearted people - his mother was famous for her jams and gooseberry pies; his father was a carpenter, who later turned news agent. He had participated during World War I in the battle of Gallipoli, and was one of the 17 who survived from his regiment. After studies at the Mexborough Grammar School, Hughes served two years in the Royal Air Force. From grammar school he won a scholarship to Pembroke College, Cambridge, where he studied first English and then switched to archaeology and anthropology. Hughes specialized in mythological systems, which provided much material for his poetry. He graduated in 1954 and moved to London, where he worked as a zoo attendant, gardener, and script reader for J. Arthur Rank.

    Guardian Saturday March 18, 2000
Sylvia Plath predicted on the day after she met Ted Hughes that their relationship would lead to her death, according to extracts from her diaries, which appear exclusively in the Guardian today and next week. Plath, one of the 20th century's outstanding poets, committed suicide in 1963, aged 30, having separated from her husband and fellow poet Hughes only months before. For the first time, the diaries reveal Plath's version of the explosive relationship that has fascinated the literary world for 40 years. They also contain a string of intimate disclosures that shed new light on the complexity of Plath's sexuality, her depression and her hatred of her mother.
