Langston Hughes, among the most versatile and prolific of modern American authors, achieved distinction in poetry, fiction, and drama. Race is at the center of his workthe beauty, dignity, and heritage of blacks in America. But Hughes was never racisthe always sought to speak to all Americans, especially on the larger issues of social, economic, and political justice. Academy of American Poets Find out why Hughes was viewed as the unofficial poet laureate of his race in the exhibit, "Poets of the Harlem Renaissance and After." This site explores Harlem Renaissance poetry, presents Hughes reading "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," and offers a selection of Hughes's other poetry as well as a brief biography. HarperAudio: Langston Hughes Can feet tell the story of a person's life? Listen as Hughes's character Jesse B. Semple answers this question, describes Harlem of the 1940s, and tells other "Simple" stories. The stories, originally newspaper features, are read by actor Ossie Davis. Perspectives in American Literature This page, "Chapter 9: Harlem RenaissanceLangston Hughes," offers questions to consider as you read Hughes's work. You'll also find a listing of his works and a bibliography.

He was raised by his grandmother until he was thirteen, when he moved to Lincoln, Illinois, to live with his mother and her husband, eventually settling in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in Lincoln, Illinois, that Hughes began writing poetry. Following graduation, he spent a year in Mexico and a year at Columbia University. During these years, he held odd jobs as an assistant cook, launderer, and a busboy, and travelled to Africa and Europe working as a seaman. In November 1924, he moved to Washington, D.C. Hughes first book of poetry, The Weary Blues, was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1926. He finished his college education at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania three years later. In 1930 his first novel, Not Without Laughter

The Langston Hughes Centenary Exhibit
Last April the Academy invited the public to visit poets.org and vote for their favorite American poets as part of a campaign to recognize American poets on U.S. postage stamps . More than 10,000 people participated in the online ballot, nominating 205 poets for future stamps. By June, when we sent our petition to the United States Postal Service, it had become clear that Langston Hughes wasand isAmerica's favorite poet, having collected more than 2,500 of the 10,000 votes cast. On February 1st, the poet's actual birthday, the USPS issued a new Langston Hughes stamp as part of its Black Heritage series in a ceremony held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. This year, National Poetry Month will bring special attention to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Langston Hughes. In honor of this milestone, and to celebrate a brilliant artist's contribution to American poetry, we have decided to make Langston Hughes the sole focus of our National Poetry Month poster and national advertising campaign.

Langston Hughes in the 1930s James Smethurst N o portion of Hughes's literary career has been more commonly dismissed than that of the 1930s. Even many of Hughes's admirers compare unfavorably his writings of the 1930s to his work in other decades. In this view, Hughes's 1930s efforts in many different genresincluding short and long fiction, poetry, drama, reportage, song writinglargely sounded over and over the same ham-fisted didactic note, lacking the lyric humanism and folk wit of his work in the 1920s, 1940s, and 1950s. This asserted nadir of Hughes's literary efforts is almost always related to his engagement with the CPUSA. But, in fact, what is formally most interesting about Hughes's poetry in the 1930s is that the wide variety of voices, styles, and themes employed by Hughes in the late 1920s and early 1930s and addressed to equally disparate audiences become largely unified by the end of the decade in a manner that is crucial to the development of his later work. This process of unification results in Shakespeare in Harlem (1942) and, ultimately

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Langston Hughes (1902-1967) African-American poet, novelist, and playwright, who became one of the foremost interpreters of racial relationships in the United States. Influenced by the Bible, W. E. B. Du Bois, and Walt Whitman , Hughes depicted realistically the ordinary lives of black people. Many of his poems, written in rhythmical language, have been set to music. Hughes's poems were meant 'to be read aloud, crooned, shouted and sung'. "Rest at pale evening...

(from Dream Variations Crisis (1921). As an adolescent in Cleveland he participated in the activity of Karamu Players, and published in 1921 his first play, THE GOLDEN PIECE in 1921. Supported by his father, Hughes entered in the early 1920s the Columbia University, New York. For the permanent disappointment of his father, Hughes soon abandoned his studies, and participated in more entertaining jazz and blues activities in nearby Harlem. Disgusted with life at the university and to see the world, he enlisted as a steward on a freighter bound to West Africa. He traveled to Paris, worked as a doorman and a bouncer of a night club, and continued to Italy. After his return to the United States, Hughes worked in menial jobs and wrote poems, which earned him scholarship to Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. According an anecdote, Hughes was "discovered" by the poet Vachel Lindsay in Washington. Lindsay was dining at the Wardman Park Hotel, where Hughes worked as a busboy, and dropped his poems beside the Lindsay's dinner plate. Lindsay included several of them in his poetry reading. It prompted interviews of the "busboy poet". Hughes quit his job and moved to New York City.

Sweet flypaper of life
DeCarava, Ray and Hughes, Langston Sweet flypaper of life illustrates with picture and with dialog, the positive side of life in Harlem. Though times were difficult, Harlem was not without beauty. Family, friendship, and religion were areas of strength, Roy DeCarava captures these moments of intimacy and warmth in his photographs of Harlem. Langston Hughes details a less known side of people and everyday life in Harlem.

Langston Hughes' Lawrence
by Katie Armitage, 1994
Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri on February 1, 1902, to Carrie Langston Hughes and James Hughes. His mother, Carrie, or Carolina, was born near Lakeview in Douglas County, Kansas and attended school in Lawrence. Shortly after her son was born she brought him to Lawrence where he spent much of the years 1903 to 1915. During Hughes' boyhood Lawrence's population was about 12,000, 20% of whom were African American.

Pinckney School. Langston Hughes entered the Lawrence Public Schools during his second grade year after spending the first grade in Topeka where his mother was then employed. Within Pinckney all black children at the primary level were taught in a separate room by a black teacher. The present building, 1930, replaced the former Pinckney school which was nearer the street. Pinckney School re-named its library the Langston Hughes Library for Children in 1991.

"The weary blues" (Gedichte, 1926) und "Das Buch vom Jazz" (1954)." (Meyers großes Taschenlexikon, 1990).
