John R. Hughes
John Reynolds Hughes was born 11 February 1855 in Illinois. The family later moved to Kansas. At the age of fourteen Hughes left home and eventually made his way into Indian Territory. He lived among the Choctaw and Osage Indians for about four years and then lived with the Comanche in the Fort Sill area. There he worked as a trader and for a short time as a traildriver. Hughes' right arm was partially diasabled during a fight, but he quickly learned to shoot with his left hand. Hughes moved to Texas, buying a farm near Liberty Hill where he raised horses. In 1886 several horses were stolen from his and neighboring ranches. Huges trailed the men for several months, killing some of them and capturing the rest. He returned the stolen horses to their owners. His feat gained the attention of not only the outlaws but also the Texas Rangers. In July 1887, Hughes helped Texas Ranger Ira Aten track down and kill escaped murderer Judd Roberts. In August 1887, Hughes was persuaded to join the Texas Rangers. He had risen to the rank of sergeant in Company D Frontier Battalion by 1893. When their Captain, Frank Jones, was klled in June 1893, Hughes was promoted to captain of Company D. For most of his career, Hughes served along the border of southwest Texas.

    WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN
    AUSTRALIAN director and co-producer, John Hughes, pads gently across the hotel room of the Marriott Hotel and extends his hand in welcome. His gait suggests a sense of ambiguity, much like the characters in his big-screen cinematic debut What I Have Written . There is a sense of uncomfortableness and caution that rests on his shoulders as he sits back in his chair and appraises the situation.
    It is the eve of the release of both Hughes and writer John A. Scott's film What I Have Written that beautifully encompasses and transcends an ecliptic sprawl of human emotion, uncertainty, error and betrayal with all of the lush, poetic prowess of Leonardo Da Vinci pouring paint onto his opulent canvases. One moment the celluloid canvas vibrates like a piece of erotic, classical music, the next it plummets into a chasm of human emotions, torment and the inaudible scream of people in pain.
    Sexual imagery and infidelity are woven tightly between the many complexities that present themselves in Hughes' narrative feature while allowing both himself and the characters an air of mystique. Hughes, who confesses, early on that he himself is not fond of intense scrutiny, and that the glare of the spotlight leaves him either traumatised, tortured or just plain stressed articulates with the resonance of a mathematician who enjoys solving the most complex puzzles of all.
    "There is a sense of concealment about this film," he begins. "The characters are all quite ambiguous and it's hard to know who they really are. We never quite know who any of them might be and thematically a key thing for me is the way the work takes on some of the confronting questions of male sexuality and the way it explores differences in a male and female's gaze; differences in modes of reception or ways of reading.

    John Hughes, p. 1126
    JOHN HUGHES, retired farmer, is a native of Washington county, Penn., having been born in Amwell township, May 15, 1821. His grandfather, John Hughes, a native of Ireland, came to the United States when a young man, and participated in the Revolutionary war in the capacity of captain. He married Miss Sarah Wiley, who bore him seven children: Thomas, James, Barnabas, Samuel, John, Annie and Isabella. The parents of this family both died in Washington county, and are buried in the VanKirk graveyard in Amwell township. Barnabas Hughes, third son of Capt. John Hughes, was born in Amwell township, Washington Co., Penn., where he was reared to agricultural pursuits, attending during a few weeks in winter time the schools of the district. He married Annie VanKirk, of his native township, and they had seven children born to them, viz.: James, William, Thomas, John (our subject), Sarah (Mrs. Moninger), Mary (Mrs. J. C. Chambers) and Margaret (Mrs. Ross, formerly of Indiana), all now deceased except John. The parents died in Amwell township, the mother at the age of sixty-six years, and the father some years later at the age of eighty-six. They were members of the Christian Church, and in politics Mr. Hughes was for some time a Jacksonian Democrat, but of later years voted the Republican ticket. John Hughes, the subject of this sketch, spent his early life on the farm, attending during the winter months the elementary schools of his district, after which he entered Washington College, from which he graduated in 1843, taking a classical course. He then returned to the farm and renewed his life vocation. He taught school for some time. In 1855 he removed from Amwell township, having bought the Nichol farm in Franklin township, which in 1886 he disposed of, and then moved into the borough of Washington, where he now resides. In 1845, Mr. Hughes was united in marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of Samuel Nichol, of Franklin township, and they had three children born to them: Franklin and Samuel, both of whom died while young, and Mary, living with her parents. The family are members of the Christian Church, in which for forty years Mr. Hughes has been an elder. Politically he was first a Republican, but now votes the straight Prohibition ticket.

    <div1 title="EDITOR'S NOTE">
    EDITOR’S NOTE
    W hen john wesley prepared his Journal for publication he prefaced it with the following account of its origin: “It was in pursuance of an advice given by Bishop Taylor, in his Rules for Holy Living and Dying, that, about fifteen years ago, I began to take a more exact account than I had done before, of the manner wherein I spent my time, writing down how I had employed every hour. “This I continued to do, wherever I was, till the time of my leaving England for Georgia. The variety of scenes which I then passed through induced me to transcribe, from time to time, the more material parts of my diary, adding here and there such little reflections as occurred to my mind. “Of this Journal thus occasionally compiled, the following is a short extract: it not being my design to relate all those particulars which I wrote for my own use only, and which would answer no valuable end to others, however important they were to me.” Rev. John Telford, one of Wesley’s biographers, says that “the earlier parts of the Journal were published in the interest of Methodism, that the calumny and slander then rife might be silenced by a plain narrative of the facts as to its founding, and its purpose.
