Bridge of Birds
Reviewed June 2000 Subtitled "A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was", Bridge of Birds has the feel of some old folk tale, but it's told in frequently modernized language ("You got a problem?") and, for that matter, characterization, and its plot is more tightly woven than any fable I've ever heard. Number Ten Ox is a citizen of the village of Ku-fu in rural China in 639 a.d. The local businessmen have inadvertently poisoned many children of the village and put them into a coma. Ox heads to Peking to enlist a wise man, and he comes back with the drunkard Master Li Kao, a sage with a slight flaw in his character. (What's the flaw? That, you'll have to glean from the book yourself.) Master Li learns that only the Great Root of Power can save the children, and he and Ox set out to procure the mysterious substance. Bridge of Birds is at once a quest story, and a mystery. Between them, they seem to embody all the best qualities of literary and pulp heroes from Sherlock Holmes to Doc Savage to Batman, reasoning and blustering their way through a variety of challenges: The Ancestress, the aged woman who once rules all China; the Duke of Ch'in, the money-hungry tyrant who has dominated much of China for centuries; and various interesting settings and obstacles laid in their way across the land. What makes the book work is the language and the humor: Li is often quite witty, and the ingenious approaches he takes to their problems are a lot of fun. The story also presents incongruities such as these two odd fellows finagling their way into huge fortunes, which they promptly squander in pursuit of some small piece of their overall goal.

Barry Hughart is an author of fantasy novels. He is best known for a series set in "an Ancient China that never was", recounting the adventures of Li Kao, an eccentric genius, and his assistant Number Ten Ox. The series consists of Bridge of Birds The Story of the Stone , and Eight Skilled Gentlemen ; more entries in the series were intended but never published. Bridge of Birds , inspired by the traditional tale of Cowherd and Weaver Girl, won the 1985 World Fantasy Award for best novel and the 1986 Mythopoeic Award for best fantasy. This article is a stub. Bridge of Birds
I have a hard time thinking of any book I have read recently that I have enjoyed as much as Bridge of Birds . Hughart tells the tale of "an ancient China which never was", filled with memorable characters like Number Ten Ox and Li Kao, a "scholar with a slight flaw in his character". Their story is a classic Chinese myth, told in a modern style. I don't mean that the charaters ride motorcycles and speak in slang. ("Hey gnarly old dude!" exclaimed Number Ten Ox. "Can I score some help to save my village?" "Only if it pays enough to get me plowed," mumbled Li Kao.) Hughart tells the story with a casual tone, setting up the clever descriptions and dialogue, with just enough flavor to reminds us this is a Chinese myth. All in all, a superb and thoroughly enjoyable tale. I bought this book at a local bookstore ( The Stars Our Destination ) where the owner offers a money back guarantee that you will enjoy this book, and I would be perfectly comfortable making the same guarantee.

a slight flaw in his characters Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? Back in the 1980's, Barry Hughart wrote three delightful fantasy novels about brawny Chinese peasant Number Ten Ox and his friend and master, the sage Li Kao: "My surname is Li and my personal name is Kao, and I have a slight flaw in my character." So far as I know, he's written nothing since, which is a great pity. Whereas Robert van Gulik 's "Judge Dee" novels take place in an extremely down-to-earth China, Number Ten Ox and Li Kao inhabitant a wild and colorful place in which Chinese folklore has a beautiful (and frequently deadly) way of coming to life. Bridge of Birds is the first of the three, and the best; don't miss it.

    Review:
The children in Number Ten Ox's village Ku-fu have been accidentally poisoned by unscrupulous con men. Ox is sent to find someone to help save them, and he picks Li Kao, a wily old scholar with a slight flaw in his character. Together they embark on a quest to find the Great Heart of Power a very special ginseng root to cure the children. But it seems their quest is linked to an older legend, of Jade Pearl and the Bridge of Birds. This is a charming, witty, and interesting story. The oriental-esque style is used well to add colour and bizarre detail, without ever becoming overly-precious, and there are some imaginative twists and turns. Many well-hidden clues are given (although the identity of one of the ostensibly mystery characters is blindingly obvious), and there are many ingenious escapes and rescues. A pleasure to read.
