"An East-Side Ramble"
William Dean Howells Impressions and Experiences In this article, Howells describes a tour he took through the tenements of the East Side in 1896. He draws interesting contrasts between the American, Irish, and Hebrew quarters, depicts the poverty, and reports on some of the attitudes, institutions, and practices that characterized the area. The New Yorkers, following the custom of Europe, often fence themselves about with a great deal of ceremony in social matters, even such small social matters as making calls. Some ladies have days when they receive calls; others have no specified day, and then you take your chance of being turned from the door without seeing them, of if you find them, of finding them reluctant and preoccupied. A friend of mine says he has often felt as if he had been admitted through the error of the man or the maid who opened the door to him at such houses, and who returned, after carrying up his name, to say, with a frightened air, that the lady would be down in a moment.

According to Edwin Cady, Howells could, "set type at six, was a useful hand at nine, and when he was eleven he could sext five thousand erns a day, a man's work" (The Road to Realism 25). During the year 1852, William Dean Howells' father published one of his son's poems in the Ohio State Journal, without his knowledge. Not much longer after that in 1853, Howells' first published fiction appears in the Ashabula Sentinel.

Several of his books, including The Rise of Silas Lapham, focused on working conditions and the class system during the end of the 19th century. Howells later traveled to Venice as the United States consul. After the Civil War, he returned to America and pursued a career as a full-time author. His experiences in Italy became background material for several travel books and essays on Italy and Italian poets. In the decade from 1881 to 1891, Howells wrote what many critics consider his best works:

His family moved around a lot, and as a boy he worked as a typesetter and printer’s apprentice. Self-taught, Howells read extensively and was very active in his language studies.
At the age of 21, Howells was city editor of the Ohio State Journal . He began to publish poems, stories and reviews in magazines, including the Atlantic Monthly . Howell’s first 'major' poetry publication was a joint effort with the Ohio poet John Piatt, called ‘Poems of Two Friends’. He also published a campaign biography for Abraham Lincoln around this time, earning him enough to travel to New England to meet such famous literary contemporaries as Hawthorne, Thoreau, Emerson, Lowell, and Whitman. For his support of the Lincoln campaign, he was appointed US Consul to Venice in 1861, where he quickly met and married his wife-to-be, Elinor Mead Howells.
