The Politics of American Authors
By William Dean Howells
Literature 3 (July 16, 1898). N o thornier theme could well be suggested than one I was invited to consider, the other day, by an Englishman who wished to know how far American politicians were scholars, and how far American authors took part in politics. In my mind I first revolted from the inquiry, and then I cast about, in the fascination it began to have for me, to see how I might handle it and prick myself least. In a sort which it would take too long to set forth, politics are very intimate matters with us, and if one were to deal quite frankly with the politics of a contemporary author, one might accuse one's self of an unwarrantable personality. So, in what I shall have to say here in answer to the question asked me, I shall seek above all things not to be quite frank.
I
My uncandor need not be so jealously guarded in speaking of authors no longer living. Not to go too far back among these, it is perfectly safe to say that when the slavery question began to divide all kinds of men among us, Lowell, Longfellow, Whittier, Curtis, Emerson, and Bryant more or less promptly and openly took sides against slavery. Holmes was very much later in doing so, but he made up for his long delay by his final strenuousness; as for Hawthorne, he was, perhaps, too essentially a spectator of life to be classed with either party, though his associations, if not his sympathies, were with the Northern men who had Southern principles until the civil war came.

Howells, William Dean
American novelist and critic, whose championing of such diverse American writers as Stephen Crane , Frank Norris, Henry James , and Mark Twain made him the most influential literary force of his day.
Born in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Howells learned the printing trade from his father; later, he worked as a typesetter and as a journalist in Ohio. Following the presidential nominations in 1860, he wrote the campaign biography of Abraham Lincoln . After Lincoln's election, Howells was appointed United States consul in Venice, Italy, in 1861. When he returned to the United States in 1866, he became assistant editor of the literary magazine The Atlantic Monthly; he served as editor in chief from 1871 through 1881. After leaving The Atlantic Monthly, Howells devoted most of the rest of his life to his own writing, achieving a preeminent position in American literature through his realistic fiction and his many works of literary criticism. From 1909 until his death, he was president of the newly formed American Academy of Arts and Letters (see National Institute of Arts and Letters).
Howells is known as much for his literary criticism as for his fiction. His critical works include the essay "Novel-Writing and Novel-Reading" (1899) and the books Criticism and Fiction (1891), My Literary Passions (1895), and Literature and Life (1902). More important than his own writing was his use of his literary reputation in support of a diverse group of authors. Howells introduced American audiences to many European realist writers (see Realism), including

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students are usually unfamiliar with Howells and his central position in nineteenth-century American literature. If they have heard of him at all, they are likely to have picked up the (still) prevailing stereotype: that Howells was a genteel prude whose realism could not possibly be of any interest to contemporary readers. Another problem is that students are not often sensitive to quiet irony in what they read; they are not prepared to hear the subtle nuances in Howells's narrative voiceor to read between the lines in his treatment of sexuality, which he handled with Victorian decorum but did not avoid as a subject. It is useful to tell students about the history of Howells's literary reputation: his contemporary fame, his fall from grace during the 1920s, his currently anomalous position in the canon. Students are usually pleasantly surprised by Howells, in part because his prose is not "difficult" (like James's ) and because they find more complexity than they had expected. It is best to start, perhaps, with the "Editor's Easy Chair" selection, which introduces students to his characteristic tone and prepares them to recognize his use of the dramatic method in the fiction: the apparent (but only apparent) narrative detachment, the embodiment of themes in the characters' dialogue and interactions.
