  • In Perloff hesitates over how to define this emergent poetic sensibility. "I have no name for this new form," she confesses. The "new exploratory poetry [...] does not want to be labelized or categorized" (166). The individual works that Perloff examines vary so greatly in page layoutsome resembling shaped prose, some Futurist words-in-freedom, some advertising copythat it would be hard indeed to find shared identifying traits such as the left-justified and right-ragged margins that typify most twentieth-century free verse. This formal diversity signals more than the breakdown of the old paradigm for verse-writing. Postlinear poets have begun inquiring into what W.J.T. Mitchell calls the "image-text," that is, the "whole ensemble of relations" between the visual and verbal (89). Moreover, as Mitchell alerts us, the "study of image-text relations" is far from a straightforward endeavor. Rarely do "image" and "text" work together in perfectly coordinated fashion. On the contrary, "difference is just as important as similarity, antagonism as crucial as collaboration, dissonance and division of labor as interesting as harmony and blending of function" (89-90). Postlinear poets revel in this ambiguity. They have recast their writing as a "composite art" that hybridizes "sensory and cognitive modes" while also "deconstructing the possibility of a pure image or pure text" (95).

Filmed in Skeletascope! The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra has to be one of the greatest parodies of old black and white sci-fi movies to date. It's so brilliantly detailed with odes and homages to the long forgotten style of horror-like film making I'm guessing the late great legendary director of monster riddled sci-fi poo himself, Mr. Ed Wood, is currently rolling in his hermetically sealed grave with directorial envy. If you're into B (or even C) films of days gone by you are going to flip for this flick! Director/writer/actor Larry Blamire (and his crew of talented actors) missed nothing as they lovingly captured the magic of that whole kooky pre-digital special effects and hokey costumed penny-a-prop look. And its stitched together with Blamire's clever script chock full of droll stereotyped subplots to create, oddly, one heck of an original film. Meanwhile aliens, Lattis and Kro-Bar (Susan McConnell and Andrew Parks), from the planet Marva have been stranded in the same neck of the woods...

THE POET’S PERSPECTIVE: AN INTERVIEW WITH SUSAN ELIZABETH HOWE
By Douglas Talley Susan Elizabeth Howe teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University and was the featured poet of a previous Meridian poetry column. Her poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Southwest Review, Prairie Schooner, Shenandoah and other journals. Her book, Stone Spirits , was published by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at BYU. The following Meridian Magazine interview of Professor Howe examines several recurring themes in the book and her views about the art of poetry. MERIDIAN: One of the intriguing elements in a number of the poems in Stone Spirits is your sense of the vast stretch of time and how it can be compressed into the present. From “Things in the Night Sky”: We are surrounded by ancient light We can’t see, come millions of years Through space we can’t recite. From “The Paleontologist with an Ear Infection”: How can a cry heard one hundred And thirty-five million years be old?
