"Mine e y es have seen the g l o ry Of the coming of the Lord
He is t r a m p li n g out the vintage

~ Julia Ward Howe Born on this day in New York City poet and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910) made history by writing the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic after visiting a Union camp in Virginia. "As he died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,” she wrote with religious conviction. Published in 1862 by the Atlantic Monthly , then put to the tune of John Brown's Body , the uplifting anthem inspired the North to win the American Civil War and free the slaves. When Abraham Lincoln heard it sung after the Battle of Gettysburg , he said tearfully "Sing it again!" "The strokes of the pen need deliberation as much as the sword needs swiftness," she said. In addition to writing a biography of Margaret Fuller (1883), Howe also wrote poetry . Her first volume, the controversial Passion- flowers (1854), and subsequent, Words for the Hour (1857), were published anonymously because of their daring look at women's rights.

Women in the Civil War
Julia Ward Howe
Julia Ward Howe, 1819-1899 Howe was and is most famous for having written the words to a war song, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." She worked with her husband, Samuel Gridley Howe, on abolitionist causes. We do not know whether Julia agreed with all Samuel did in this area, but Samuel Howe is often believed to be one of the "Secret Six" who bankrolled John Brown’s actions. For the liberation of the slaves the Howes would back war. But after the war when Julia Ward Howe saw the devastation left behind in her own land and saw the Franco-Prussian War beginning across the Atlantic she turned her efforts to the development of an international Mothers’ Day for Peace. She suggested June 2 as the date, since by then there should be good weather for the marches and demonstrations that were to be the focus of the day. For several years after 1870 women in Boston, New York, Philadelphia and other American cities and in England, Scotland and Switzerland celebrated June 2 as a rallying day for peace. Unfortunately, despite these women’s counsels they did not find the "means whereby the …human family can live in peace." In Julia Ward Howe’s later years she found herself involved in supporting Russian freedom and in support for the Armenians in the Turkish wars. She had two great causes in her life, peace and equality. Sometimes for equality she sacrificed peace. But she found that to sacrifice equality for peace was often too high a price to pay.

Mother's Day Proclamation
by Julia Ward Howe*, 1870 The First Mother's Day proclaimed in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe
was a passionate demand for disarmament and peace. Arise, then, women of this day! Arise, all women who have hearts, whether your baptism be that of water or tears! Say firmly: "We will not have great questions decided by irrelevant agencies. Our husbands shall not come to us, reeking with carnage, for caresses and applause. Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have taught them of charity, mercy and patience. We women of one country will be too tender of those of another to allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." From the bosom of the devastated earth, a voice goes up with our own. It says, "Disarm, Disarm!" In the name of womanhood and of humanity, I earnestly ask that a general congress of women without limit of nationality may be appointed and held at some place deemed most convenient and at the earliest period consistent with its objects, to promote the alliance of the different nationalities, the amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace.

SORRY, WRONG ANSWER!
Julia Ward Howe (1819-1910). Although probably best known for writing the words to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" using the tune "John Brown's Body," Howe was a well known writer, and advocate for women's suffrage, one of the founders of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, and women's peace conference. She was the founder and for twenty years the editor of the "Woman's Journal" and she edited "Sex and Education", which was a defense of coeducation. In 1883 she published a biography of Margaret Fuller. In 1908 she was the first woman to be elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Trivia Quiz Home

95. Julila Ward Howe Writes The "Battle Hymn Of The Republic"
julia ward howe’s Account of the Writing of the Battle Hymn of the Republic .This extract comes from julia ward howe’s Reminiscences, 18191899.
http://johnbrownsbody.net/JWHSong.htm
of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" Reminiscences, 1819-1899 . It is the best source document we have on the writing of the poem. We were invited, one day, to attend a review of troops at some distance from the town. While we were engaged in watching the manoeuvres, a sudden movement of the enemy necessitated immediate action. The review was discontinued, and we saw a detachment of soldiers gallop to the assistance of a small body of our men who were in imminent danger of being surrounded and cut off from retreat. The regiments remaining on the field were ordered to march to their cantonments. We returned to the city very slowly, of necessity, for the troops nearly filled the road. My dear minister [James Freeman Clarke] was in the carriage with me, as were several other friends. To beguile the rather tedious drive, we sang from time to time snatches of the army songs so popular at that time, concluding, I think, with "John Brown’s body lies a-mouldering in the ground;
His soul is marching on."

97. Hungry Heart: Julia Ward Howe's Literary Apprenticeship
Hungry Heart The Literary Emergence of julia ward howe is a study of the firsttwo decades of howe s adult life, based on extensive unpublished materials in
http://www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~jgw/hungry.htm
RECENTLY PUBLISHED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS PRESS H ungry Heart: The Literary Emergence of Julia Ward Howe is a study of the first two decades of Howe's adult life, based on extensive unpublished materials in Harvard's Houghton and Schlesinger Libraries. It narrates the story of Julia Ward's education, her decision to marry renowned Boston philanthropist Samuel Gridley Howe, the severe marital difficulties they experienced between 1844 and 1857 as a result of (among other issues) her desire to pursue literary and intellectual interests, and her eventual emergence as a writer. It is not a full-scale biography of this period; rather, it establishes a biographical context for understanding her first two collections of poetry ( Passion-Flowers , 1854, and Words for the Hour , 1857) and her five-act verse play, The World's Own , produced in New York in 1857. I argue that these three published works constitute a unit, each element of which illuminates the other two; and further, that certain personal events in the late 1850s, as well as the coming of the Civil War and Julia Howe's celebrity as a result of "The Battle Hymn," in effect sealed off this first portion of her life, making 1857 an appropriate terminus for the study. This book also examines a never-published 400-page prose narrative that Howe wrote in the late 1840s, featuring a hermaphrodite as its protagonist. I read this startling, fascinating, incomplete work, which frequently ventures into territories proscribed for 19th-century women, as Howe's effort to understand her husband's intimate friendship with Charles Sumner (the details of which I present in Chapter Two). Recent studies of affection between 19th-century men provide a context for theorizing about the challenge Howe faced in conceptualizing the phenomenon and positioning herself in relation to it.
