    Notes on Life and Works
    Julia Ward was born in New York and married Samuel Gridley Howe in 1843. They had six children and co-edited the abolitionist organ The Commonwealth . Her penning of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and her extraordinary work on behalf of the state and women earned her many honors: she was the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and President of the New England Woman Suffrage Association. Her activities and interests are well documented in her Reminiscences Mine Eyes have Seen the Glory Private Woman, Public Person: An Account of the Life of Julia Ward Howe from 1819 to 1868

    Chronology
    J ulia Ward was born in New York in 1819. Her ancestors included two colonial Rhode Island governors. Julia was educated by governesses in a private environment permeated by property ownership, wealth and privilege. On a trip to Boston in 1841 Julia met Samuel Howe, a noted philanthropist, educator, and founder of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. The pair married in 1843. Samuel Howe supported the anti-slavery movement but was less inclined toward women's emancipation. Some archivists contend that Samuel Howe was a member of the populace targeted by temperance reformers and that his abuse of alcohol contributed to physical abuse of Julia. Julia, in addition to giving birth to six children, wrote poetry and plays. The Boston resident occasionally recited to Lyceum audiences in and around the Boston and New York vicinity but did not travel far from home. With the Civil War came the cessation of Lyceum activity. War became a form of macabre entertainment. Frequently townspeople would pack picnics and plan excursions to view battles on the outskirts of town. It was after one such battle in 1861 Julia Ward Howe saw the reality of the horrors of war. In a moving tribute to Union soldiers Julia composed the poem

    Battle Hymn of the Republic poem
    Julia Ward Howe
    Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
    He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
    He hath loosed the fatal lightning of his terrible swift sword:
    His Truth is marching on.
    have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps;
    They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
    an read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps.
    His Day is marching on.
    I have read a fiery gospel, writ in burnished rows of steel:
    As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal; Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel, Since God is marching on.' He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat; He is sifting out the hearts of men before his judgment-seat: Oh! be swift, my soul, to answer Him! be jubilant, my feet!

    Julia Ward Howe's Mother's Day Proclamation
    EDITOR'S NOTE: The following Mother's Day Proclamation was written by Julia Ward Howe in Boston in 1870. The Chronicle watched and waited on Mother's Day and the days leading up to it to see if our media would remind the public of the original intent of this "special day." Arise then...women of this day!
    Arise, all women who have hearts!
    Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
    Say firmly:
    "We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
    Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
    For caresses and applause.
    Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
    All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
    We, the women of one country

    On January 28 , 1908, author and activist Julia Ward Howe, famous for her composition, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," became the first woman elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Born in New York City in 1819, she and her husband, social activist Samuel Gridley Howe, embraced the abolitionist movement and edited the abolitionist newspaper the Commonwealth during the 1840s. In 1861, the couple was included among a group invited to Washington, D.C. to review the status of Union troop morale after the First Battle of Bull Run Howe's first-hand experience of a November 18, 1861 Confederate attack on Union troops in Virginia inspired "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." She wrote the poem to the tune of " John Brown 's Body," a marching song popular among Union soldiers. Published in the Atlantic Monthly in February 1862, the author received just five dollars for the piece. Although soldiers were reluctant to abandon their improvised verse to the popular folk song , the poem proved popular among civilians in the North. Soon "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" rang out at public gatherings above the Mason-Dixon line.

    "Im Willard Hotel in Washington erwachte die Dichterin Julia Ward Howe aus einem lebhaften Traum. Sie hatte an diesem Tag ein vorbeimarschierendes Neu-England-Regiment singen gehört, und die Melodie von "John Brown's Body" hatte ihr beim Einschlafen noch in den Ohren geklungen. Sie stand im Dunkeln auf und kritzelte mit einem Bleistiftstummel ein Gedicht auf ein Blatt Papier. Für vier Dollar verkaufte sie es an den Atlantic Monthly. Es wurde zur Kampfeshymne der Union."

      As a writer, poet, reformer and lecturer, Howe worked throughout her life for justice. In 1861, she authored The Battle Hymn as an inspiration to Union soldiers fighting against slavery. Howe's work is now the national anthem for freedom.
      Of even greater importance to her, she founded, with Lucy Stone and others, the New England Women's Club, which later became the American Woman Suffrage Association. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th century, Howe lectured and wrote on women's rights. She fought not only for the right to vote, but also struggled to liberate women from the confinement of the traditional "womanís place" in stifling marriages like her own, where none of her ideas were valued or accepted. She also worked for world peace, founding, in 1891, the American Friends of Russian Freedom, and serving as president, in 1894, of the United Friends of Armenia.
