PETER HOWARD has been instructing at Sugarloaf/USA, Maine, since 1969. He not only teaches the general public, he also trains instructors, whether from Sugarloaf or elsewhere on the East Coast. Peter's enthusiasm is infectious, and he helps others relish the sport as much as he does. Many who've caught his fever for skiing have gone on to become prominent instructors themselves.

"DARKNESS AT NOON": THE ECLIPSE OF "THE PERMANENT THINGS" Peter Kreeft We all know what Christianity looks like when viewed from the standpoint of modernity. In this essay I shall try to turn the truth tables and see what modernity looks like when viewed from the standpoint of Christianity. My point of view is what C. S. Lewis called "mere Christianity." "Mere Christianity" means not "little Christianity" but "big Christianity": full, Biblical, apostolic, traditional, orthodox Christianity. I shall be using many of Lewis' ideas in this essay: some explicitly, some implicitly. But this is not a scholarly essay about Lewis but an amateur essay using Lewis (and others) to think about the fate of "the permanent things" in the modern world. (I'm sure Lewis would much prefer his readers to think <with> him rather than <about> him; to look <along> with him rather that at him (to use his own very useful distinction, from the essay "Meditation in a Toolshed.") But what does modernity look like from the viewpoint of Christianity? Essentially, a gallows on which "the permanent things" are lynched without a trial; an altar, or a slaughterhouse in which "the permanent things" are sacrificed to the dark gods of Baal and Ashtaroth and Moloch: power and greed and lust.

    "Midwinter Fair," by Peter Howard
Garth Graeper "Midwinter Fair" is, as its subtitle notes, a hypertext poem. More appropriately, "Midwinter Fair" is a sequence of poems that are interrelated in various ways; to move through the sequence, the reader chooses one of the hyperlinked words in a given poem, which then sends the reader to another poem . Interestingly, more than one word or phrase is often hyperlinked to the same poem, so the reader must be prepared to synthesize a number of different relationships for each poem. In a few instances, some words are actually hyperlinked to poems by other authors on the Internet; these poems follow the same system of hyperlinks and almost always return the reader to a poem directly within the "Midwinter Fair" sequence on the first link. Many of the poems work slyly within the conventions, diction, and form of poetry written long before digital literature, baring perhaps the strongest resemblance to the tradition of 17th-century British literature (although they mix elements from many literary eras). The poems seem aware of their status both as historical "re-creation" and as contemporary hypertext poetry. "Midwinter Fair" has, at its core, one central poem that narrates the details of a strange "year-long / midwinter rosy-cheeked / Santa Claus feast." This is the poem that begins the "Midwinter Fair" sequence and has, by far, the most hyperlinked choices. It is worth quoting in full, as it sets the tone for the entire sequence:

Tory leader Michael Howard promised lower taxes and higher public services, claiming a Tory election victory would block the tax rises that a third Labour term would bring. He made the pledge in a fighting speech in Dundee where he mocked Tony Blair as "Peter Pan" Prime Minister living in a "Never Never" land. Mr Howard also promised his audience at the Scottish Tory Party annual conference that the Tories had learned the lessons of the Thatcher era. "We are succeeding because we've learnt a bit of humility," he said. "We've learnt that you don't win the hearts and minds of the people of Scotland by preaching to them from London. "And we've learnt that people in Scotland won't trust us unless we trust them. Now we want the chance to put what we've learnt to the service of this great nation." His speech also committed a future Tory government to a "constructive relationship" with the devolved administration in Edinburgh. Mr Howard also pledged a Tory government would seek a rapid British pull-out from Europe's Common Fisheries Policy - achieving this by Westminster legislation, if necessary
