Howard, Henry, Earl of Surrey
Surrey, Henry Howard, Earl of (1517?-1547), English soldier and poet, son of Thomas Howard, 3rd duke of Norfolk. He was given his title by courtesy in 1524, when his father became duke of Norfolk. Howard served in the war with Scotland in 1542, and in 1543 he fought in Flanders with the English army on the side of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who was seeking to acquire the Netherlands. The following year he was wounded at the siege of Montreuil; in 1545 and 1546 he was commander of the garrison of Boulogne. Quick-tempered and quarrelsome, he made many enemies and was imprisoned several times for misconduct. Arrested with his father on trumped-up charges of treason, he was condemned and executed in 1547.
Although not primarily a man of letters, Howard greatly enriched English literature by his introduction of new verse forms. His love poems, like those of his contemporary Sir Thomas Wyatt , show the influence of Italian models. The two share the distinction of having introduced the sonnet to English literature. Howard's translation of the second and third books of the Aeneid by

Henry HOWARD (1st E. Northampton) Born: ABT 24 Feb 1540, Shottesham, Norfolk Died: 15/16 Jun 1614, Northampton House, The Strand Buried: Dover Castle Notes: Knight of the Garter . Baron of Marnhull Father: Henry HOWARD (E. Surrey) Mother: Frances De VERE (C. Surrey) Roman Catholic intriguer during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I of England, known for his unscrupulousness and treachery. Born near Ipswich at Shottesham, he was the second son of the poet Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey , and the younger brother of Thomas Howard, fourth Duke of Norfolk When John White, Bishop of Lincoln , replaced his old tutor, John Foxe Sir Henry took an instant liking to the Bishop, an ardent Catholic. And when the Bishop removed to Winchester in 1556, Sir Henry went with him. There Sir Henry studied philosophy, civil law, divinity, and history, and seems to have acquired a strong sympathy with Roman Catholicism. On the death of Queen Mary , "Blood Mary," and the accession of her half sister, Queen Elizabeth , the "Virgin Queen," the Catholic clergy were stripped of their titles.

To further drive the point home, the government went on to ban all of Miller’s works from entering the United States. In 1961, the ban was lifted, but his work continued to be labeled “obscene” by the Citizens for Decent Literature. advertisement
I’m not exactly sure who the Citizens for Decent Literature were, but I suspect they had many children and raised them all to think the same way. Whatever they’re called now, they seem to be a powerful lobby and certainly have unbridled support from the White House. But why stop at literature? Let’s do a sweep of television and radio as well. Not only are four-letter words being slapped with hefty fines, but one now must be very careful in talking about the human anatomy. God help the oncologist who goes on a morning talk show to discuss b-st cancer. Getting back to Henry Miller for a moment… Sometime in the early 1960s (I was probably in 7th or 8th grade) a classmate slipped me a tattered paperback copy of a “Tropic of Cancer.” The fact that it had been banned made the whole transaction delicious. Also delicious was my clever smuggling of this supposedly lewd book into my bedroom where I hid it beneath the mattress and took it out late at night. For a week, I huddled under the covers with a flashlight reading the book that an entire nation had banned. My apologies to the Citizens for Decent Literature, but I was neither sullied, corrupted, tarnished nor ruined by the book. I was instead inspired by Miller’s artistic genius and his bold, muscular writing.
