Howard Henry
Howard Henry was King's Private Secretary from 1930 to 1945. He was an important member of King's staff and is mentioned frequently in the diary. King said of him: "Henry is a very steady fellow very quiet, but appreciative and sound, a fine character." (Diary, October 22, 1930) Henry apparently came from the Finance Department, because there was a suggestion in March 1931 that he should return there; however, this did not happen. (Diary, March 6, 1931) Like all of King's staff, Henry worked long hours and helped King with a variety of tasks. As well as the usual duties of a private secretary, he helped with such things as sorting books and files and moving filing cabinets at Kingsmere. (Diary, August 15, 1930) During the war, he carried a heavy load of responsibilities and served King well. In 1945, he was appointed Registrar of the Exchequer Court. previous next
